CHAPTER ONE
My life has been a rollercoaster, starting with being abandoned at a tender age of two. Left in front of a small orphanage, I grew up under the care of an indefatigable Mrs. Adams. Amidst all the uncertainty, I found a beacon of hope in Mrs. Adams, the compassionate caregiver who raised me. Growing up in the orphanage, I was often ostracized by the other kids, but Mrs. Adams' unwavering love and support made me feel seen and valued. As the years passed, the other children found their forever families, but I chose to stay with her, my only family. Now, the orphanage has closed, and it's just the two of us. Am staring at the customers from the counter. When you get bored you have no other option than to simply entertain yourself. As I stand behind the counter, I observe the cast of characters that walk into this café. There's the elderly gentleman, transfixed by the coffee in front of him, as if it's a puzzle he's trying to solve. I chuckle to myself, 'oldies are indeed a special breed!' My conscience chimes in, 'Hey, don't be too quick to judge, you'll be there someday too!' My gaze shifts to the guy by the window, who's entranced by the blonde busy perfecting her makeup. I roll my eyes, 'Typical guys, always distracted by a pretty face!' But then, my attention is captured by a tiny ball of energy, a little cute boy clapping his hands with glee, his eyes fixed on the piece of cake in front of him. My heart melts, 'Aww, at least someone in this place is genuinely happy!' Just as I'm basking in the warmth of that adorable bundle of joy, my eyes land on a crime scene in the making. A man, fork in hand, is about to commit cake-cide! I silently plead with him, 'No, no, no! Don't do it! That's a masterpiece, a work of art, a delicious creation that took me hours to perfect!' But alas, my cries fall on deaf ears, and he proceeds to demolish the cake with all the finesse of a sledgehammer. 'I should get an award for restraint, because all I want to do is march over there and... well, let's just say, 'reorganize' his face!' But, I take a deep breath and remind myself, 'No, no, no! I'm a professional, I won't let cake-related rage get the better of me!'" As I stood behind the counter, lost in my own little world of self entertainment, a harsh voice snapped me back to reality. "Hey." The tone was curt, dismissive, and already my instincts were screaming warning signals. "Welcome to 'The Honeycomb Cafe'! What can I get you?" I asked, forcing my brightest smile and most polite tone. "Cappuccino," she replied, waving her hand imperiously. I felt a twinge of annoyance but maintained my professional demeanor. "How many, ma'am?" “Do you see anyone else with me, or are you just dumb? Bring it quickly, I don't have all day." She spat the words, her eyes rolling. I bit back my tongue, my politeness faltering for a moment. "Right away, ma'am." I prepared her coffee as fast as I could. As I presented her drink, she took a sip and promptly spat it out. "Eww! you call this coffee? It tastes like shit." My anger flared, but I kept my cool, I get this kind of customer at least twice a week. Her sense of taste is definitely the problem because I make the best coffee here. Everyone says so. "make another one." What the hell! "Okayy.. I'm really sorry, another coffee is coming right up." I quickly prepared another one, tasted it. Yep! It's perfect. I made my way to her and kept her coffee on the table. "Ma'am, here is your Cappuccino." She tasted it. Inwardly I patted my back. She spat the coffee. AGAIN "You really don't know how to make a simple Cappuccino." She stood screaming at me. "Do you take money for staring at everyone's face? You are such a waste." I looked at her in disbelief. "I beg your pardon?" "Oh! So now this trash has hearing problems." "Ma'am I understand you're having a rough day and your probably looking for someone to pass your frustrations on, but you can't talk to me like that." "Oh really. Then how should I talk to you?" she asked, pushing me back. "Huh? Tell me." "Come on, I don't have all day." She pushed me. AGAIN That's it . Stop! You need this job. Fuck this job. The guy who murdered my cake was sitting right in front of me. I took the cake and smashed it on her face. She stood there shocked. " Who's the trash now?" I asked with a sly smile. She glared hard at me before attempting to slap me"YOU b***h!!" I held her hand and pinned it behind her "Don't even think about it. It's not my fault your sense of taste is shit." I let go of her hand pushing her backward. "AAHHH!!" She screamed. "What is going on here?" someone said from behind me and I immediately recognised the voice. Fuck! Is the Manager. I’m doomed! I turned around. "Look what she did." The b***h said, indicating her face. Which I didn't touch for record sake. The cake did it. "Athena ?" manager said. "Sir I-" I started but he cut me off. "What the hell did you do? How can you treat a customer like this." "Sir, she was rude to me and-" he cuts me off. AGAIN "That's no excuse Athena ." "I am sorry Sir, I got angry-" "You are fired." "What. Sir!!!?" I asked in shock. "You heard me. Pls leave." "Sir I am really sorry -" "LEAVE. NOW." He shouted. Fuck!!! not again. I went in and collected all my things, I was about leaving when I saw the b***h smirking at me. It made me more angry. I am fired right???. Good then. I can do what the hell I want. I marched straight to her table, took her Cappuccino that was sitting pretty on the table and threw it at her. With a polite smile on my face I said sweetly "Have a wonderful day ma'am!!" With that I walked out of the café without looking back. I could hear her shouting and the manager apologizing. What am I going to do now? I am officially jobless. When I got home I saw Mrs Adams sitting on the couch holding a paper in her hand. I went to her, kneeled in front of her and I took the paper from her. "What is it mom?" I read the paper. "What the hell!" "Athena, they want to make a restaurant from this property. Steve has lost the last thing that I have of value to gambling. What are we going to do?" Her son is a gambler, an unsuccessful gambler that always creates problems for us. Mrs Adams has lost everything she had because of him and now this house too. I hugged her. " We'll figure something out. I will find a place for us." But the big question is how? I lost my job. We only have a month to leave this house. I can't see her cry. I have to do something fast.
