The Ballroom
Katniss POV “Assassins—there are assassins in the ballroom! Luna Michelle has been murdered… quickly, protect the Alpha!” “What of the princesses?” “Protect the princesses as well!” Loud alarms and chaos spread across the ballroom as I stared at the dying body of my mother on the floor. My body went cold and my eyes filled with tears that refused to fall. “Kat—Kat—niss…” Mother muttered as I tried drawing closer to her. My legs felt heavy, and before I could get to her, her eyes went dull and her body stiffened. She was dead. “Mother!” I muttered, not believing what I was seeing. I tried to hold the hands that were once warm and soft, but now they were cold and stiff. Someone came from behind, pulling me hard to my feet. I turned with tears dripping down my face. It was father. His eyes were red and held so much emotion, but his voice was calm. “Go with Beta Simon. He will keep you and Mirabel safe…” He gestured, and I turned to see Beta Simon, who always had a kind smile, now wearing a solemn look, holding Mirabel, who had already fainted in his arms. I shook my head, resisting Father’s hold, trying to go back to Mother. “No… I won’t go! Mother is not dead… I will trade my life for hers!” I yelled in tears, but Father held me tightly before landing a sharp slap on my face. I stared at him in disbelief— this was the first time father has ever laid his hands on me “My moon…”His voice cracked— Tears filled my vision. “Please take care of yourself and your sister. Remember, the world doesn’t favour the weak. It knows no gender, age, nor time. Be strong and powerful. Conquer and be victorious. We love you and Mirabel so much, and may the Moon Goddess forever be in your favour.” He kissed my forehead gently. I held onto him tightly, silently pleading with my eyes, but he gently handed me over to Beta Simon. “Go now!!!” he yelled and transformed into his Alpha wolf, diving into the midst of the assassins. “Goodbye, my old friend,” I heard Beta Simon mutter before dashing out. My tears poured down. Before we knew it, a loud explosion came from behind— Beta Simon quickly shifted into his wolf using it as a shield for me and Mirabel. My vision went dark, with tears dripping from my eyes...my memories slowly drifted back to how the entire day began… FLASHBACK “Katniss… Katniss… wake up, darling… it is the Celestial Day today!” A soft voice entered my ears, followed by a gentle tap on my butt. “Mother—quit that already!” I muttered, but all I got was soft laughter. “Get up, darling. It is the Celestial Day today. I am sure you wouldn’t want to miss the appointment of the Celestial Beings.” “I am sleepy. I just want to sleep in.” Before I could drift off again, footsteps rushed into my room, followed by Mirabel. “Come on, Katniss, we are going to be late! Everyone is already gathered in the ballroom!” I opened my eyes slowly to see both Mother and Mirabel standing there. “Greetings, Luna Michelle… how are you this fine evening?” I asked with a smile. “I am very well, Princess Katniss. I hope your rest was blissful?” “Yes, my Luna.” “And where is the Alpha?” “Awaiting his Luna and favourite princess." Mirabel cut in excitedly, making us giggle. “Yes, Princess Mirabel, we shall obey.” We laughed as they left. “Katniss, if you don’t get dressed in 10 minutes, I will tell your father you said he has a bald head.” I groaned and Mirabel laughed. My name is Princess Katniss Raymond, daughter of Alpha Raymond of the Silvercrest Pack. My mother is Luna Michelle, and Mirabel is my younger sister. I just turned 16. Mirabel is 14. She is my best friend apart from Mother. Today is the Celestial Day Selection—a day where girls aged 15 are devoted to the Moon Goddess to serve as Celestial Beings. They serve for life. No mate. No wolf ties. No family. Although harsh, it is one of the most respected positions in the werewolf realm. Our pack has about 8–10 Celestial Beings. I once intended to be part of them, but I was rejected by the Moon Goddess. I got over it when Father spoke to me about my greater responsibilities as the next Alpha. Mirabel will also be joining next year, and she is excited, though Father is worried because her wolf is weak and her spirit energy is slowly draining. Father plans not to involve her, but Mother and I convinced him otherwise. Sigh— I got dressed quickly and headed downstairs. The ballroom was already full when we arrived. Members of both our pack and visiting packs filled the hall. The announcer welcomed us as we moved toward Father’s seat. We raised our glasses for the Celestial Day toast. The event began. I tried to leave to meet my friends, but Father pulled me into greeting Alphas. “This is Alpha Bardo of Casstd Pack. Alpha Anajar of Forest Pack. Alpha Gastrón of Faxer Pack. And Alpha Cedric of Moonnight Pack.” I portrayed “Greetings to you all. It is an honour.” They praised me, and I smiled politely while standing there exhausted. Father later excused me, and I joined my friends. “Guys, I have a huge secret,” Favourite said. “Just say it,” Derick replied. “There is a rumor… someone has discovered the Golden Wolf.” We gasped. “How certain are you?” Pascal asked. “It is just a rumor,” she said. “But people outside the borders are beginning to believe it.” We fell silent. Within the werewolf realm, wolves are ranked by colour—Green, Yellow, Blue, Purple, Silver, White, and Red, the strongest. My father is the only Alpha with a Red wolf. But there is a myth of a Golden Wolf—created by the Moon Goddess’s rage, combining light and darkness, said to control all spiritual beings. No one has ever seen it. “I wonder who spreads such rumours,” Pascal said. We were interrupted when Mirabel called me through our sibling link. I excused myself and went to help her. When we stepped out again, chaos had already started. Screams filled the hall. A waiter was killed in front of us, his heart ripped out. Mirabel screamed and collapsed. A shadow assassin moved toward us baring his sword. I killed it quickly and ran while holding Mirabel. Then I saw it. My mother. On the floor. Bleeding. “No…” I ran toward her. Too late. Her eyes met mine once. Then she died. PRESENT I opened my eyes slowly. A hand held me down. “Lie back, Katniss. You are not strong enough yet.” I turned. A man sat beside me. Familiar yet unfamiliar “Who are you?” I asked. “I am Alpha Cedric.” “I will be in charge of you and your sister from now on.” “What of my sister?” “She is safe. In the next room.” I exhaled slowly. Then my voice broke. “What of my parents?” Silence. “They are both dead.” My breath stopped. “I’m sorry for your loss,” he said. “But I am here to help you.” I stared at him. “What is it to you? Why are you helping me?” He smiled slightly. “When the time comes, I will let you know.” Silence filled the room. And in that silence, I knew one thing. I had to survive. Not just for me, But for mirable... For the truth behind the assassination— i must survive.
