CHAPTER 1: LANDLORD
Bang. Bang. Bang The annoying knock on my door did not show any signs of stopping. The sound was literally frilling straight into my poor skull. Groaning, I rubbed my sleepy eyes with hope that it would sober me up but to no vain. I pushed my lazy body to sit up on my small bed which was definitely too small for my age, only to be pinned down by my throbbing headache from the hangover. My body is aching all over. I was definitely carrying the problems of the whole world on my shoulders. Bang Bang "I am coming" I shouted in a hoarse voice wondering who the hell would want to see anyone so early in the morning. I dragged my lazy feet on the cold floor. With a sickening creak, I opened my old wooden door. Oh dear! Have you ever woken up with a head splitting hang over to an angry poker-faced landlord? Well, I can assure you that is not pleasant at all. "Good morning ma" I greeted her hoping she wouldn't pounce on me. Instead she looked me dead in the eyes without blinking and told me to pay her rent or collect my trash and leave her house. I could only look down since I had nothing to say in retort. As if her barking wasn't enough, she stormed into my single room "oh so now the room yours? Would she be here now if it were the case?" My inner voice chose the time to remind me that the room actually did not belong to me in the first place. Dang! Bam! The sound of my radio cassette pulled me from my train of thoughts as she sent it flying across the wall splitting it into pieces. That was my only gift I had left from my mother. She had bought from me from her first salary when I was joining college. she said it would keep me company and help me relax. "oh so you even have the guts to cook and eat peacefully in my house without thinking about paying my rent at all?" she ranted yanking the lid off the pot I had used to cook pasta the previous night which I barely touched due my terrible appetite. Ma please I can explain I tried to plead. "Don't ma me" she cut me off as she looked for something else to throw. I followed her around trying to shield my poor things from getting spoilt but I didn't succeed since she swiped at the cup, plates and the small dressing mirror hanging on the wall. Crash! Crash! Each sound of my breaking things broke something within me along with them. After what felt like hours of throwing things and yelling at me, she seemed tired too since there was nothing left to throw anyway. Breathing hard as if she had run a marathon, she pointed at the door gesturing for me to be out of her house in two days if I can not raise the rent fair and with that, she was gone. She left me sitting in the middle of the mess with broken glasses, scattered clothes, saucepans among others I sank to the floor exhausted and defeated wondering what I had done in my past life to deserve this at this age. I collapsed on my small bed and cried remembering my mother who had died and left me all alone in this cruel world. My thoughts then wandered to Cliff Watson. He had been my best friend and the strongest support system since my mother passed. He had been there for me through every situation through the happy times and the sad times. But of course, fate wasn't kind at all. It took him away from me as well. I stared at my old cracked ceiling wondering how that evening had taken a huge turn. Everything was planned out perfectly, at least that is what I thought before everything went wrong. I still remember those hurtful words he said to me that night. Wiping the tears that were flowing endlessly, I came to a conclusion that I would explain everything to him once he calmed down. But wait, I don't even know what exactly happened that day!
