Darielle Highmore, once sheltered by privilege, is now forced into survival after her family’s sudden fall, struggling to provide for her widowed mother and younger sister while holding onto her dignity. All she wants is stability and peace, but betrayal lurks dangerously close, as those she trusts most begin to turn against her. When she unexpectedly captures the attention of the powerful and observant Alexander Wright, it ignites a storm of jealousy in Sheila Scott, a wealthy family friend who has always lived in Darielle’s shadow. Blinded by envy and desperate to claim the life she believes Darielle has stolen from her, Sheila sets a calculated plan in motion—using manipulation, alliances, and Darielle’s own past lover, Frank Thompson, as a weapon to break her. As deception tightens around her, Darielle must fight not only to protect her heart and family, but to rise above the betrayal meant to destroy her. In the end, her greatest victory may not be revenge, but reclaiming her strength, her worth, and her peace.

Chapter 1: Into The Lion's Den
“I want to die!” Sheila hurled a chair across the wall, it's pieces scattering across the floor. “Ahhh!” she screamed, grabbing whatever she could find and throwing it violently. “Sheila! What is all this?” Mrs. Scott rushed in, her heart racing after the nanny’s panicked report. She froze at the sight — the room in disarray, and her daughter's makeup smudged. “I want to die… I don't want to live like this!” Sheila choked, tears streaming down her face. “Will you stop that nonsense,” Mrs. Scott snapped, her voice firm. “Don't ever say that again.” “Why can't I have what I want, mom? Why?” Mrs. Scott sighed, walking over and guiding her to sit on the bed. “Calm down first… now tell me what happened.” “It’s nothing,” Sheila muttered, wiping her tears angrily. “I’m just tired. Tired of working at AJ Bakery like some… servant. All because of one mistake. Dad froze my accounts, like seriously? This isn’t fair!” Sheila voiced out half of her frustration, she couldn't let her mom know the real reason for her anger. Her dad's punishment was like adding fuel to the fire. “You know your father. Once he decides, that’s it. It’s just three months. You’ll survive.” “Three months?” Sheila scoffed. “That’s like forever, I'm tired already.” “Please talk to him, Mom… please.” Sheila held unto her mom in search for sympathy, her tone switched from that of anger to one of plea Mrs. Scott softened slightly, she hesitated but then nodded. “I’ll try.” Sheila was her daughter, she wasn't use to this life, everything she wanted they provided for her. She was spoilt to the core, which lead to her buying things without caring, Sheila would look down on people as long as they didn't match her class. All her bad behavior were noticed by her dad prompting him to punish her severely after all she was old enough to care for herself. “I'll call the help to clean this mess, you control your temper.” With a stern warning Mrs. scott left the room. Satisfied, Sheila leaned back against the bed, watching her mother leave. The moment the door shut, her expression changed completely. The former on the bed carried her phone and dialed a number, the call connected, on hearing the voice on the other end her face darkened. “We need to talk”- her voice evidently filled with anger. WEEKS LATER… Darielle stood outside AJ Bakery , not as a worker . But as someone desperate. She had called her best friend, Cecilia Patrick earlier on… but no luck. Since she was out of town. Darielle was in a state of turmoil. The account of Jobs? None. Her hope? Fading. Her mother had finally gotten something, but the pay? Barely enough. Darielle exhaled slowly. “Think… think…” Then one name crossed her mind. “Frank Thompson.” Her heart tightened instantly. “No.” She shook her head. Though they have been together for the past few months, she couldn’t risk it. Couldn’t look like someone begging for help. Her pride wouldn’t allow it. Darielle believed in one thing: If it doesn’t come from your sweat, it doesn’t belong to you. So she kept searching. Even if it meant walking straight into something that would change her life. — — — Bay lounge: Music filled the air, the atmosphere was thick, filled with people, sounds of their shoe clattering on the floor as they danced in response to the music played by the Dj. The lounge excluded a luxury plus chill energy. The lights were dim but coloured, flashing across different faces. The air, carried expensive scents mixed with alcohol and the smell of smoke, this left Darielle gasping for air. Yet she remained calm as she walked with Mary Gelber one of the cleaners from AJ Bakery. Darielle observed her environment, her head moving in different direction as she scanned the place; the couches and tables were spaced out giving off that comfort yet dark feeling. Different people on their respective tables hanging out, the smell of alcohol and expensive perfume were evident. She took glances at people taking pictures and men at the corner who smoked cigarettes. The waitresses passed by serving drinks to tables and taking orders, the bartenders at the counter mixed cocktails showing off their exceptional skill. Darielle shifted on her seat, fingers tightening around the edge of her gown. The music pressed against her ears, too loud… too close. She swallowed, forcing her shoulders to relax, even as her eyes kept searching for the exit. Mary lead her to a couch, “ sit here I'm coming the meeting is at the VIP section let me call them.” “okay,” Darielle could only respond with a nod, not in the mood to talk. Mary noticing her expression added - “I know you're not used to this kind of place it's just for the job nothing else.” Mary coaxed her with a nudge and went to the side to place a call. Mary and Darielle were friends since she entered the bakery, though their area of duties differed, during breaks they would sit together and chat away. This was one of the friends Darielle had who would be open and blunt with her. But not as blunt as Cecilia. At that moment she missed her bestfriend. Cecilia didn't inform her when she would return. Darielle sighed. Like they say no one was perfect, though Mary carried a heart of gold she wasn't a naive lady, she had experience with the world's way- went on partys, clubs, late night hang out, having fun Mary was present. One of the things that would leave her looking exhausted when she was at work. Darielle confided in Mary for a job, the latter told her she had a place that needed a waitress urgently. Mary lead the way and here they where: In A Lounge! The place mom never gave consent to. Darielle murmured beneath her breath. Mary came back and gestured for her to come. Darielle followed obediently and they made their way to the VIP section which was on the fourth floor. “Darielle I've spoken to you before we got here, be calm you got this. Remember the story I told you concerning your work experience. Make sure you make it believable okay? I can't follow you. The guard will take you to the boss’s office those are the rules,” she said. “B… but can't you …come with me?” darielle’s voice trembling but thoughtfully kept her emotions in check not hinting to the guard she hadn't come to a place like this before. Mary leaned in, whispering into her ear… “I'm not forcing you,we can leave now. I agreed to this because you needed it.” “I'm … I,” Darielle stuttered still feeling off about it. “but her family needed this” with just that thought, her heart hardened, her expression Swiftly turning to one of confidence. “I'll be back.” Mary smiled filled with relief. “ Meet me downstairs once you're done.” Their interlocked hands now separated. They got into the elevator. The body guard taped a button and waited till they got to the fourth floor. As they both got out she felt an unease settling within her. Burying that feeling inside, she followed in the direction of the body guard as he directed her towards the office. The body guard stoped and opened the door, signaling her to enter. With summoned courage Darielle entered and the door closed behind. “Welcome, have a seat.” A man sited at the other end of the room voiced out, his voice raspy. Though Darielle hadn't seen the man's face due to the dimly lit room she walked towards the chair and sat down. Being opposite to each other, the table in between them, created a gap. “Good evening sir, I was told you were in need of more staffs I'm here to work as a waitress.” Darielle said, moving straight to the point. “Hmmm. A waitress.” The man adjusted himself on the chair bringing his face into view. “I .. ye..yes sir.” She was taken aback by the scar on his face. Disfiguring his looks. “Your name?” “Darielle sir.” “Darielle, why so frightened? Haven't seen a scare like this before?.” He asked with his fingers trailing the scare from the center of his head to the corner of his eye. A smirk playing on his lips. “Umm sir what are the requirements that you need? I have them with me.” Darielle brushed off his question focusing on why they were here in the first place. “I believe Mary has sent my curriculum vitae via email.” she added, though knowing it was forged. “Call me Bruks,” he said glancing at the lady in front of him, “she is a damsel” he thought to himself. “Your hired. You're on a monthly salary. the pay is $600.” For a second… she thought she heard wrong. “Sir… ?” Darielle blinked. Once. Twice. Her lips parted, but no words came out. Just like that… she got the job? That was it? No questions. No stress. No story needed? Her fingers curled slightly against her lap. Something didn't sit right. Mary said the chances of him hiring her were slim, so why the sudden agreement? Mary must have really pleaded on her behalf, she didn't need to tell the fake story of the various place she worked. “Alright then.” Mr Bruks got up. The chair scraped against the floor. Darielle's eyes followed him without thinking. Each step he took felt… heavy. He crouched to her level. “Why don't we talk a little more. Mary Gelber assured me you were a good lady,” he said, his voice dropping.” Before Darielle could react, his hand rested on her leg. “ I can consider increasing the pay,” he said, caressing her leg. Darielle was good looking, though she wore a free gown yet her alluring figure caught his attention,of which he couldn't resist. Darielle's muscles stiffened , her temperature instantly dropping. “No Mr Bruks the pay is good I'm okay with it,” she replied, with a stern voice. Shoved his hand away, while getting up to leave. This was what she tried to avoid. She would have landed a slap on his face but this was now her boss . She couldn't risk it. After all Mary put in quite the effort for her. She couldn't just ruin it. As she walked past him headed towards the door, a strong grip tightened her wrist and pulled her back, landing her on the table. Causing items on it to scatter to the ground. “M … Mr… Bruks wh… what are .. you trying to do?” Her breath hitched. Her chest rose and fell too fast. The room suddenly felt smaller… like the walls were closing in. “I don't take no for an answer,” he replied, still holding her in a firm grip. Pain shot through her arm. “Help!” her voice cracked as it tore out of her throat. “Somebody…” “No one will hear you.” a sly smile played across his face. Reaching out to the gown she wore. “No please don't I beg of you” tears of fear began to stream down her cheeks. She was pure she couldn't let anyone touch her. She began to scream - “Help! Somebody help me!” Hoping someone could here her and come to her rescue. “Shout all you want no one will hear you,” “Let me go,” she began to struggle. In a fit of rage she slapped him across the face and bite him hard on his hand. “You stupid girl, I'm doing you a favour. Do you know what it means to be with me? other women in your position would be glad!” he shouted at her. “I don't want please let me go.” Darielle said as she struggled to break free from his grip. Mr bruks held Darielle firmly and tore her gown, revealing her upper body. “ No!!” Darielle screamed in terror, as she instinctively covered herself with her hand. “It won't hurt I promise” Mr Bruks uttered in a disgust tone that irritated Darielle's ears. As he tried to touch her, Darielle saw a pen at the table, she took it and stabbed him on his shoulder. “Ahh” Mr Bruks yelped in pain. “Tough huh? I won't go easy on you.” He held her arm above her head and tore the remaining clothes to the floor. He reached for the drawer underneath the table and took out a syringe filled with an opaque substance. As she struggled to free herself, she felt cold instantly on seeing the syringe,”he wants to drug me” she thought. Darielle fought more, she couldn't loose her dignity in such manner. Never! However Mr Bruks having more advantage in strength pinned her down hard and injected the content into her body. Instantly, Darielle felt her limbs began to weaken. She instinctively screamed her lungs out not knowing what possible step to take. “Mary help me” she managed to choke out within sobs. “What did you put in my body?” Reasons unknown to her she felt her body become hot. A desire stirred within her. Immediately Darielle knew it was from the drug. “Just a sedative to give yourself willingly.” Mr Bruks responded feeling utterly excited. Now she wouldn't resist him. The moment she heard his words tears slid down her cheeks. It Was Over! What would she tell her mom? How would people see her? “If this was how it would play out then so be it”after all it was her decision, she braced herself as she watched the man loosen his belt. Her vision blurred due to the substance in her system. Darielle's gaze landed on the slightly opened door, a familiar figure stood at the entrance. Her eyes filled with hope, “Frank” she called quietly. However the man smirked and closed the door. Watching the door close filled Darielle with complex emotions. “ Did he just leave me here to be violated by another man?”
