Chapter 17
Ryan, dreaming in erratic snippets, tossed around on the bed, tangling and twisting in the blankets. He rode on a flying carpet, holding hands with Pablo, his boss and lover, traveling north past the Hollywood sign, over the mountains and the San Andreas Fault and the farm valleys. They drifted up the San Francisco Peninsula, toward the blinking red lights on Twin Peaks, and became encased in fog. Ryan fell off the carpet and heard Pablo tell him he was fired. Ryan did not believe him. He wandered the hilltops to find his home and forgive Pablo. Instead, he found silver rings and a bronze pendant hidden on the Lyon Steps, behind a pot of flowers. Faceless men in grey cloaks witnessed his discovery and began chasing him up the stairs.
