Ryan expected to follow Maclean Vallance downstairs to a murky room, perhaps something drab in the basement. Instead, upon exiting the garage, Maclean ascended a spiral staircase at the back of the house. They reached the top floor, the third floor, which had a lower ceiling height than the rest of the mansion levels, and Maclean led Ryan into a bedroom suite with north-facing windows that provided a spectacular evening view of the San Francisco Bay. A walkway lined with two closets, one on each side, was the passageway to the bathroom, which included a double vanity, two toilets, a claw bathtub, and a dual shower cloaked with slate tiles.
