CHAPTER ONE: WHEN FIRE MET ICE
No one walked into Dmitri Volkov’s world uninvited.
And if they did…
They never left the same.
The grand hall of Volkov Enterprises was silent, polished to perfection, just like everything Dmitri owned. Marble floors reflected the expensive lights above, and the air carried the quiet tension of people who knew better than to make mistakes.
Because in this building…
Mistakes cost everything.
“Cancel the meeting,” Dmitri said coldly, walking past a line of nervous executives without sparing them a glance.
“Sir?” his assistant hesitated. “But the investors flew in from—”
“I don’t repeat myself.”
Three words.
And that was enough.
“Yes, sir.”
Fear followed him like a shadow.
As it should.
Dmitri adjusted his cufflinks, his expression unreadable, his mind already moving ten steps ahead of everyone else. Control. That was what he thrived on.
Everything in his life was controlled.
Planned.
Perfect.
Until..
“Let me go!”
The voice shattered the silence.
Sharp.
Defiant.
Wrong.
Dmitri stopped walking.
Slowly… he turned.
And that was when he saw her.
Ava Laurent.
Two security men struggled to hold her back, but she wasn’t going quietly. Her hair fell around her face in soft waves, slightly messy from the struggle, her eyes blazing with anger that refused to dim.
She looked out of place.
Not because she didn’t belong
But because she wasn’t afraid.
“What is the meaning of this?” Dmitri asked, his voice low, dangerous.
One of the guards stepped forward nervously. “Sir, she forced her way in. She refuses to leave.”
“I’m not leaving,” Ava snapped immediately. “Not until I see him.”
Dmitri’s eyes darkened slightly.
“You’re looking at him.”
Silence fell.
The guards released her.
Ava straightened instantly, lifting her chin like she had just been waiting for this moment.
Good.
Dmitri liked confidence.
He also liked breaking it.
“You caused a scene,” he said calmly, stepping closer. “That’s already a mistake.”
Ava crossed her arms, unimpressed. “Then maybe you should’ve made it easier to get an appointment.”
His lips twitched slightly.
Bold.
Very bold.
“People wait months to see me,” he said.
“I don’t have months,” she replied sharply.
Their eyes locked.
And just like that..
The world narrowed.
Dmitri studied her carefully this time.
Not just her beauty..though it was impossible to ignore.
No.
He studied her fire.
The stubbornness.
The way she refused to look away.
It irritated him.
And intrigued him.
“What do you want?” he asked.
“A job.”
A pause.
Then..
A few people nearby almost laughed.
Almost.
Dmitri didn’t.
“A job?” he repeated slowly. “You break into my company, disrupt my staff… and expect to be hired?”
“I didn’t break in,” Ava corrected. “Your security is just terrible.”
A dangerous silence followed.
One of the guards swallowed hard.
Dmitri took another step closer.
Now she could feel it,
His presence.
Heavy. Dominating.
Unavoidable.
“You’re either very brave…” he said quietly,
“…or very stupid.”
Ava didn’t move.
“Or maybe,” she replied, her voice steady, “I just don’t care who you are.”
That did it.
Something shifted in his eyes.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Something darker.
Interest.
“You should,” Dmitri said softly. “It might save you.”
“I don’t need saving.”
Their words clashed like fire against ice.
And neither of them was willing to lose.
“Why should I hire you?” he asked.
Ava didn’t hesitate.
“Because I’m not like the people you’re used to.”
His brow lifted slightly.
“Oh?”
“I won’t lie to impress you,” she continued. “I won’t pretend to fear you. And I definitely won’t tolerate disrespect.”
The room went still.
Completely still.
Dmitri stared at her.
Longer this time.
Deeper.
Then..
He smiled.
A real one.
And that was more dangerous than his anger.
“You’re right,” he said.
Ava blinked slightly.
“I’ve never met someone like you.”
For a split second, something flickered in her chest.
But she ignored it.
Dmitri turned, walking back toward his office.
“Follow me.”
Ava hesitated.
Then followed.
Of course she did.
Inside his office, the doors shut behind them.
Now it was just the two of them.
Silence stretched between them like tension waiting to snap.
Dmitri leaned against his desk, watching her.
“You want a job?” he said.
“Yes.”
“You’ll get one.”
Her brows furrowed slightly. “Just like that?”
“No,” he replied.
“Not just like that.”
He stepped closer.
Slow.
Intentional.
Now they were standing too close.
Close enough to feel each other’s presence.
Close enough to notice everything.
“Working for me isn’t easy,” Dmitri continued.
“I don’t tolerate mistakes.”
“Good,” Ava said. “Because I don’t make them.”
His smirk returned.
“We’ll see.”
A pause.
Then..
“You start tomorrow.”
Ava blinked.
That fast?
Something about this felt… off.
But she didn’t question it.
“Fine.”
She turned to leave..
“Ava.”
She stopped.
Slowly turned back.
Dmitri’s eyes were locked on hers.
Cold.
Possessive.
Certain.
“Be careful,” he said quietly.
Her brows furrowed. “Of what?”
A slight pause.
Then..
“Me.”
Silence filled the room.
But Ava didn’t back down.
Instead… she smiled.
Small.
Defiant.
“I don’t scare easily.”
Dmitri watched her for a moment.
Then his smirk deepened.
“That’s what makes this interesting.”
Ava walked out without another word.
But the moment the door closed..
Dmitri’s expression changed.
Darkened.
Sharpened.
“Find out everything about her,” he ordered calmly.
His assistant nodded quickly. “Yes, sir.”
Dmitri turned back toward the window, his reflection staring back at him.
Cold.
Unmoved.
But not untouched.
Because for the first time in a long time…
Something had caught his attention.
And Dmitri Volkov never ignored anything that interested him.
Especially not her.
