Chapter One: The Offering
The snow hadn’t stopped falling since morning. It coated the marble steps of the palace in silence, muting the sounds of the arriving carriage. The one carrying her. Elira Dorne sat with her hands trembling in her lap, the thin fabric of her cloak doing nothing to keep out the cold. She didn’t dare ask for a warmer one. Prisoners didn’t make requests. Not out loud, at least. She was here because her family had been branded traitors. Her father executed. Her mother vanished. And now, she was to be “given” to the king as a peace offering a sign that the house of Dorne would no longer challenge the crown. The door opened. A soldier barked her name, and Elira stood on shaking legs. No chains. Not yet. But her freedom had already been stripped the moment she crossed the palace gates. They led her through high stone corridors that smelled of ash and old blood. Past black banners stitched with silver thorns, the sigil of House Vale. Past silent maids who lowered their heads and didn’t meet her eyes. And then, into the throne room. He sat there like a statue carved from onyx. Black robes. Dark hair. Unsmiling. Unmoving. His crown was made of twisted iron, his expression unreadable. King Lucien Vale. She had expected cruelty, yes. But not beauty. And not the way his gaze pinned her, quiet and cold, like a wolf sizing up prey that had wandered too close to its den. “You’re smaller than I imagined,” he said, voice like frost. “And softer.” Elira flinched but said nothing. He rose from the throne. Each step he took toward her made the guards tense, but he didn’t draw a weapon. He didn’t need to. “You’ll stay in the east wing,” Lucien said. “Behind locked doors. I don’t like when my pets wander.” “I’m not your—” Her voice broke as he stopped inches from her, lifting her chin with a single gloved finger. “You are what I say you are,” he said, low and final. And Elira realized, with a chill, that she’d been thrown not into a palace. But into a gilded cage.
