CHAPTER FIVE The Truth Behind the Smile The atmosphere inside the Williams Mansion became suffocating. Jeffrey stood a few feet away from Agatha, his eyes fixed on the photographs scattered across the balcony table. Madam Ebele stepped forward, her face hard with anger. "What are you doing here, Jeffrey?" Jeffrey straightened his shoulders. "I came to speak with Agatha." "You've said enough to my daughter over the years." "No, ma'am," he replied calmly. "I haven't said nearly enough." Madam Ebele folded her arms. "Then you should have spoken three years ago." Silence followed. Jeffrey couldn't deny it. She was right. Behind Madam Ebele stood Unduka, watching the exchange quietly. He had only just arrived, carrying a gift box for Agatha, but it was obvious he had walked into the middle of a storm. Agatha finally broke the silence. "Mother... please." Madam Ebele turned to her daughter. "Agatha, you don't owe this man a single minute of your time." Jeffrey looked at Agatha, ignoring everyone else. "I only need five minutes." Agatha's eyes met his. "You said those same words at the office." "I know." "And I said no." Jeffrey nodded. "I remember." He glanced at the photographs. "But those pictures are being used to keep us apart." Agatha picked one up. "Were you with Beatrice that day?" "Yes." "Were you holding her?" "Yes." Her expression fell. "So what exactly am I supposed to believe?" Jeffrey took a deep breath. "Believe that what you see isn't the whole story." Madam Ebele scoffed. "Enough of these riddles." "If you have something to say, say it." Jeffrey opened his mouth. The words refused to come. A promise. A secret. A burden he had carried for three years. He looked at Agatha, knowing that once he spoke, nothing would ever be the same again. Instead, he lowered his head. "I'm sorry." Agatha laughed bitterly. "I didn't ask for an apology." "I asked for the truth." Unable to bear another second, she turned away. "I'm tired, Jeffrey." "Please..." "No." Her voice trembled. "Leave." Jeffrey stared at her for a long moment before nodding. "If that's what you want..." He slowly walked away. As he reached the front door, he paused without turning around. "I'll never stop fighting for you, Agatha." Then he left. ... Later that evening, rain poured heavily over Lagos. Jeffrey drove aimlessly through the city until he reached the beach where he and Agatha had shared some of their happiest memories. Tony found him there nearly an hour later. "I thought I'd find you here." Jeffrey smiled faintly. "This place reminds me of who I used to be." Tony stood beside him. "You almost told her." "I almost broke my promise." Tony looked out at the crashing waves. "Maybe it's time." Jeffrey shook his head. "If I speak now..." He paused. "...someone innocent will pay the price." Tony frowned. "You're still protecting that person?" "I gave my word." Tony sighed. "And in keeping that promise, you're losing the woman you love." Jeffrey closed his eyes. "I know." ... Back at the Williams Mansion, Agatha couldn't sleep. She sat at her dressing table, staring once more at the photographs. Something bothered her. She picked up the third picture. Her eyes narrowed. The reflection in a nearby glass window caught her attention. There was another figure in the background. Barely visible. Almost hidden. She quickly grabbed a magnifying glass from her desk drawer. The face wasn't clear... But she could make out enough to know one thing. Someone else had been there that day. Someone the photographs had conveniently cropped out. Her heart raced. "What really happened?" At that very moment, her phone rang. The caller ID displayed a name she hadn't seen in years. Mr. Anthony Clayton. Agatha answered immediately. "Good evening, Mr. Clayton." "Good evening, Agatha." "I hope I'm not calling too late." "Not at all." "I've heard you're back in Nigeria." "Yes." "I'm pleased. I have an important proposal I'd like to discuss with you." Agatha smiled politely. "I'm listening." "Our board has approved the plan to establish a Peacup European headquarters in Switzerland." Her smile faded. "I'd like you to lead the project." The room fell silent. "This would mean relocating for at least two years," Mr. Clayton continued. "It's the biggest opportunity of your career." Agatha looked out through the rain-covered window. She had returned to Nigeria hoping to leave her past behind. Now, before she had even settled in... The future was calling her away once again. Far across the city, hidden in the shadows of his office, Chief Clement Eze received a phone call. "Sir," his assistant said excitedly. "The Switzerland proposal has been offered to Agatha." A slow smile spread across Chief Clement's face. "Perfect." "If she accepts..." He looked out over the city lights. "...Jeffrey will lose her all over again." And this time... There would be no second chance
