Homecoming
CHAPTER ONE Homecoming The captain's voice echoed through the cabin. "Ladies and gentlemen, we will be landing at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, in approximately ten minutes. Please fasten your seatbelts and ensure your seats are in the upright position. Thank you for flying with us." Agatha Williams slowly opened her eyes. She turned toward the window, watching the endless blanket of clouds part to reveal the glittering skyline of Lagos beneath them. Her heart tightened. Home. Three years. It had been exactly three years since she had left Nigeria to pursue her master's degree in London. Three years since she had walked away from the man she once believed she would spend forever with. Three years since her heart had been shattered. She closed her eyes briefly and whispered to herself. "This is a new beginning." Yet deep inside, she wasn't sure she believed those words. --- An hour later, the airport terminal buzzed with excitement as passengers reunited with waiting families. Dragging her silver suitcase behind her, Agatha stepped through the arrival gate. She wore a cream-colored fitted suit, a white blouse, and matching heels. A pair of sunglasses rested lightly on her face, while her long, dark hair fell over her shoulders. People glanced at her as she walked by, but she paid them no attention. She was searching for only one face. "Agatha!" She turned instantly. A beautiful young woman came running toward her with tears of joy in her eyes. "Daniela!" The two women embraced tightly, laughing through happy tears. "I've missed you so much," Daniela said. "I missed you too." Daniela pulled back and looked at her from head to toe. "London really upgraded you." Agatha laughed. "And you're still as dramatic as ever." "Someone has to be." Both women burst into laughter. After loading the luggage into Daniela's SUV, they drove out of the airport and merged into the busy Lagos traffic. "So..." Daniela began with a mischievous smile. "How does it feel to finally be home?" Agatha stared out the window. "It feels familiar..." She paused. "...and frightening at the same time." Daniela understood immediately. "You've been thinking about Jeffrey." Agatha's smile disappeared. "I thought we agreed never to mention his name." "I know." "So let's keep it that way." The rest of the drive passed mostly in silence. --- Several kilometers away... Inside the headquarters of Chima Energy Group, a board meeting had just ended. The directors applauded after another successful quarterly report. Jeffrey Chima remained seated. His attention wasn't on the celebration. He absentmindedly flipped through the report before him, reading the same sentence repeatedly without understanding a single word. "Jeff." Tony's voice interrupted his thoughts. "The meeting is over." Jeffrey looked up. "Oh." Tony folded his arms. "You've been somewhere else all morning." "I'm fine." "You've been saying that for three years." Jeffrey forced a smile. "I'm serious." "No." Tony lowered his voice. "I heard something today." Jeffrey raised an eyebrow. "What?" "Agatha returned to Nigeria this morning." Everything around Jeffrey suddenly became silent. His heartbeat quickened. "What did you say?" "Daniela called me herself." Jeffrey slowly stood. For three years, he had dreamed of this moment. Yet now that it had arrived... Fear replaced excitement. Would she ever forgive him? Could she? --- The Williams family mansion stood proudly in one of Lagos' most prestigious neighborhoods. Servants lined up at the entrance as Agatha stepped out of the SUV. "Welcome home, Miss Agatha!" She smiled warmly. "It's good to be back." Before she could take another step, Madam Ebele hurried out of the house. "My daughter!" Mother and daughter embraced tightly. "I've missed you so much." "I missed you too, Mum." Madam Ebele held her face proudly. "You've become even more beautiful." Agatha laughed softly. "I take after you." Dinner that evening was filled with laughter, stories from London, and endless family conversations. But after everyone had retired, Madam Ebele knocked gently on Agatha's bedroom door. "May I come in?" "Of course." She entered carrying two cups of tea. "There are a few important things we need to discuss." Agatha smiled. "Business already?" "You know me too well." Madam Ebele sat beside her. "Mr. Anthony Clayton called yesterday." Agatha looked surprised. "Mr. Clayton?" "Yes. He still wants to partner with Peacup International." Agatha nodded thoughtfully. "That's wonderful." "He also mentioned opening a European branch in Switzerland." Agatha smiled. "That's a huge opportunity." "It is." Madam Ebele hesitated before speaking again. "But business isn't the only thing we need to discuss." Agatha already knew where the conversation was heading. "Marriage?" Her mother smiled knowingly. "You're twenty-eight now." "Mum..." "I'm only saying it's time to think about your future." Agatha looked away. "My future is exactly what I'm trying to rebuild." Madam Ebele reached for her daughter's hand. "Whatever happened three years ago..." She paused. "...don't let it happen again." Agatha forced a smile. "It won't." After her mother left the room, Agatha walked onto the balcony overlooking the city. The cool night breeze brushed against her face. She whispered into the darkness. "I came back for my family..." She swallowed hard. "...not for you, Jeffrey." Miles away, Jeffrey stood outside his apartment, staring at the very same moon. "If fate has given me another chance..." He closed his eyes. "...I won't lose her again." Neither of them knew that fate had already begun writing the next chapter of their lives. And this time... Love would have to survive secrets far more dangerous than either of them could imagine.
