The Alpha Who Rejected His Fated Mate
Chapter 1: The Rejection The first thing I noticed when I arrived at the Moon Temple wasn't the crowd or the music drifting through the valley. It was how calm everyone looked. Wolves laughed with their families, children chased each other across the courtyard, and elders greeted old friends as though tonight were nothing more than another festival. I wished I could borrow even a fraction of that calm. "You're overthinking again." Nora appeared beside me carrying two silver cups of moonflower tea. She handed one to me before studying my face with an amused smile. "You haven't said more than three words since we left home." "I don't think tea is going to fix this." "It won't." She shrugged. "But at least it'll stop your hands from shaking." I glanced down. She was right. The tea rippled inside the cup because I couldn't keep my fingers still. Nora laughed softly. "See? I told you." I let out a breath and looked toward the temple standing proudly beneath the full moon. It was beautiful tonight. White stone reflected the silver light, making the entire building glow as though the Moon Goddess herself had descended to bless it. "I've imagined this night so many times," I admitted quietly. "Now that it's finally here... I'm terrified." "Because of the ceremony?" I shook my head. "Because of him." Nora didn't ask who. She already knew. Everyone who had grown up with me knew. Alpha Kael Blackthorn. His name had lived inside my heart for so long that saying it out loud almost felt dangerous. I had watched him become the youngest Alpha in the Northern Kingdom, watched him protect his pack, watched him stand where every warrior dreamed of standing. From a distance, of course. Girls whispered about how handsome he was. Warriors respected his strength. Elders praised his leadership. I tried convincing myself that I admired him for the same reasons everyone else did. It was a lie. Somewhere between admiration and longing... I had fallen in love with a man who barely knew I existed. "You know," Nora said, breaking the silence, "there's still a chance he isn't your mate." I smiled weakly. "I know." "And if he is?" My heart skipped. "I don't know." That was the truth. I had spent years dreaming about hearing the Moon Goddess tie our souls together, but dreams were always kinder than reality. What if he looked at me and saw nothing? What if fate gave me everything I'd ever wanted... only for him to wish it had chosen someone else? The thought settled heavily in my chest. Before I could say another word, three deep bells echoed across the valley. The conversations stopped almost instantly. One by one, every wolf turned toward the temple entrance. "The ceremony is beginning," an elder announced. Nora gently squeezed my hand before letting go. "No more overthinking." Easy for her to say. She wasn't walking toward the moment that could either become the happiest memory of her life... ...or the one that destroyed it forever. I drew a slow breath and climbed the stone steps with the rest of the crowd. The closer I came to the temple doors, the louder my heartbeat became until it drowned out almost everything around me. When the ancient doors finally opened, moonlight spilled across the polished floor inside, revealing the sacred Moon Stone waiting at the center of the hall. Tonight... The Moon Goddess would decide my future. The inside of the Moon Temple was breathtaking. Moonlight poured through the glass ceiling, bathing the ancient hall in silver. Hundreds of candles flickered along the stone walls, their flames dancing in the cool night breeze that slipped through the open arches. At the center of the temple stood the Moon Stone, glowing softly as though it had a heartbeat of its own. Every wolf quietly took their place. The atmosphere that had been filled with laughter only moments ago became almost sacred. Even the children stood silently beside their parents, their curious eyes fixed on the glowing stone. I found a place near the back with Nora and tried to steady my breathing. "You look pale," she whispered. "I'm fine." "You've said that three times already." I forced a smile, but she wasn't convinced. Before either of us could speak again, the High Elder stepped onto the raised platform beside the Moon Stone. His white robes brushed against the polished floor as he slowly raised both hands. "Tonight, under the blessing of the Moon Goddess, we gather to witness what no wolf has the power to change." His deep voice echoed through every corner of the temple. "Not rank." "Not blood." "Not power." "Only fate decides who belongs together." The hall fell completely silent. Even the candles seemed to stop flickering. I lowered my eyes for a brief moment, pressing my hands together as I whispered the same prayer I had repeated every full moon for the past three years. Please... Just let me have the strength to accept whatever happens tonight. The elder nodded toward the entrance. "Let the Alphas enter." Heavy footsteps echoed across the temple. One after another, the Alphas from different packs walked inside, each surrounded by their Beta and Gamma. They carried themselves with quiet confidence, earning respectful bows from the wolves standing nearby. Then... The entire hall seemed to hold its breath. Another pair of footsteps echoed through the silence. Slow. Steady. Unhurried. I didn't need to look. My wolf was already awake. She lifted her head inside my mind, her ears twitching excitedly. *He's here.* My heart skipped. The scent of cedarwood and rain drifted through the air before I even saw him. When I finally looked toward the entrance, Alpha Kael Blackthorn stepped into the temple. He wore a black ceremonial coat embroidered with silver thread that caught the moonlight with every step. Tall and broad-shouldered, he moved with the effortless confidence of someone born to lead. Warriors straightened instinctively as he passed, while elders lowered their heads in silent respect. He didn't acknowledge the attention. His expression remained calm. Unreadable. Beautiful. For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. Nora leaned closer until her shoulder brushed mine. "So..." She smiled without taking her eyes off the Alpha. "I finally understand why you've been hopelessly in love with him." Heat rushed to my face. "Be quiet." She laughed under her breath. "I'll take that as a yes." I wanted to deny it. Instead... I watched Kael walk toward the Moon Stone, completely unaware that somewhere in the crowd, one foolish girl was praying with everything she had that fate would be kind. The High Elder waited until every Alpha had taken their place before resting both hands on the Moon Stone. The ancient crystal responded instantly, its silver glow spreading across the temple floor like ripples over still water. One by one, the carved runes beneath our feet began to shine, filling the hall with a quiet hum that seemed to vibrate deep inside my chest. "The Moon Goddess sees every heart," the elder said. "She knows every truth hidden in darkness, and she alone decides the bond no wolf can break." A respectful silence settled over the crowd. No one questioned his words. No one ever did. I lowered my gaze, trying to calm the storm inside me, but it was useless. My pulse grew faster with every passing second, and the strange warmth spreading through my chest refused to disappear. Beside me, Nora noticed the change immediately. "You're shaking again." "I know." "You'll be fine." "I hope you're right." She smiled, but before she could say anything else, the Moon Stone flared with blinding light. A collective gasp swept through the temple. The silver glow rose into the air like countless ribbons of moonlight before separating into dozens of thin streams. Each one drifted silently through the hall, circling wolves chosen by fate before fading away. Around us, joyful cries erupted. "Mates!" "I found my mate!" Some wolves laughed. Others embraced each other without caring who was watching. An elderly couple wiped tears from their eyes as their daughter threw herself into the arms of the young warrior standing beside her. The temple, once silent, came alive with happiness. I smiled without realizing it. Maybe... Maybe tonight really would be different. Then I felt it. A sharp pull deep inside my chest. Not painful. Not yet. It felt more like an invisible thread tightening around my heart. I frowned. My wolf suddenly stood inside my mind, completely alert. "Do you feel that?" Before I could answer, the pull became stronger. My breathing caught. Every instinct inside me screamed to look up. Slowly... I lifted my eyes. Across the temple, Alpha Kael froze mid-step. For the first time that night... He wasn't looking at the Moon Stone. He was looking directly at me. For a heartbeat, neither of us moved. The noise around me faded until all I could hear was the sound of my own pulse pounding in my ears. Kael's golden eyes remained fixed on mine, unreadable as ever, yet something about the way he looked at me made my wolf restless. "He feels it," she whispered. I swallowed hard. No. Maybe I was imagining it. Maybe he was simply looking in my direction. Then Kael took a single step forward. The invisible thread inside my chest tightened instantly. A sharp breath escaped my lips. My wolf let out a joyful howl, running circles inside my mind like an excited child. "It's him." She sounded so certain. So happy. The High Elder slowly smiled as if he had already understood what was happening. "It seems," he said, his voice carrying through the temple, "the Moon Goddess has chosen another pair." Every wolf turned to follow Kael's gaze. I suddenly wished the ground would swallow me whole. Hundreds of eyes searched the crowd until they finally landed on me. The whispers returned. "It's Lyra..." "No..." "It can't be." "The Alpha's mate is the traitor's daughter?" I felt every stare like a weight pressing against my shoulders. Nora quietly reached for my hand and squeezed it. "Don't listen to them." I tried not to. But it was impossible. The whispers grew louder with every passing second. Kael continued walking, his expression giving nothing away. He stopped only a few feet from where I stood, close enough for me to see the faint scar near his jaw and the silver embroidery stitched into the collar of his ceremonial coat. He looked exactly the same as he always had. Strong. Calm. Untouchable. For years, I had imagined what this moment would feel like. I thought I would be smiling. Instead, I could barely breathe. The pull between us became almost unbearable. My wolf stepped forward inside my mind, lowering her head in quiet recognition. "Our Alpha." The words sent a shiver through my entire body. Kael's jaw tightened. For the briefest moment, I saw something flicker in his eyes. Shock. Then disbelief. Then... Something much colder. His gaze drifted to the silver crest embroidered on my sleeve. The Ashwood crest. I watched the realization settle across his face. He knew exactly who I was. No one spoke. The silence inside the Moon Temple felt heavier than stone as Kael stood before me without saying a single word. His golden eyes searched my face, as though he were trying to convince himself the Moon Goddess had made a mistake. The bond between us grew stronger with every passing second. I could feel it. So could he. His wolf was close enough for mine to sense, restless beneath the calm expression he wore so effortlessly. Every instinct inside me whispered the same thing. Walk to him. Take his hand. Everything will be alright. The High Elder smiled knowingly and stepped forward. "Alpha Kael," he said, his voice calm but filled with quiet satisfaction. "The Moon Goddess has revealed your fated mate. There is no greater blessing than the one standing before you." A few elders nodded in agreement. Several wolves began smiling. Someone near the front even started clapping softly. They were waiting for only one thing. For their Alpha to claim his Luna. Kael never looked away from me. Instead, his eyes slowly drifted to the crest embroidered on my sleeve. The silver wolf of the Ashwood family. His expression changed almost instantly. The warmth that had briefly appeared in his eyes vanished without a trace. His jaw tightened. His shoulders became rigid. I watched every emotion disappear behind the cold mask the entire kingdom knew so well. My stomach twisted. Something wasn't right. The elder seemed to notice it too. "Alpha?" Kael closed his eyes for only a second. Inside him, his wolf roared. Mine... Mine... Don't do this. When he opened them again, there was nothing left except ice. He took one slow step backward. A murmur spread through the temple. Confused glances were exchanged between the elders. Even Nora frowned beside me. "What's he doing?" I wanted to answer. I couldn't. My throat had gone completely dry. Kael finally spoke. His voice was calm. Steady. Emotionless. "Lyra Ashwood." Hearing my name from his lips should have made me happy. Instead... Fear settled deep inside my chest. Because the way he said it... Sounded nothing like a man speaking to his fated mate.
