Chapter Three
Natalie put her hand on Zara's left shoulder, trying to comfort her.
"You can do this, okay. Moreover, this isn't your first VIP, just see this in a lighter way, it might mean you're finally moving forward. Or what do you think?"
Zara shot her a bored look.
"That was cringey Nat..."
Giving a sarcastic smile, Natalie replied "Yeah, I know."
A voice interrupted them, "You're the waiting attendant for Joel Watson??"
They both looked up to lock eyes with Lindsay's, which was almost shooting lasers. She looked like she was about to burst out of rage.
Natalie moved closer to her, folding her arms in order to look intimidating.
"Yes. Any problem?"
Smiling sarcastically, Lindsay rolled her eyes at Natalie,"I don't think I was talking to you, Natasha."
"It's Natalie, you...!" Zara quickly stood up from her seat and intervened, knowing Natalie's personality, she was just a few seconds from pulling Lindsay's blond-dyed hair from the black roots.
"Nat, stop. It's not worth it." Zara said, stepping in front of Natalie, now face to face with Lindsay.
"Yes,I'm Joel Watson's waiting attendant. Do you have any questions for me? " Zara said to Lindsay.
"Of course,I do. I have so many questions, but the most important one is, what was Mrs Carter thinking? Putting someone like you in such a position. A waiting attendant to VIPs like Joel Watson should at least have a personality. Not a robot." Lindsay said, finishing her sentence with a scoff.
"Awww, you look really pained, Ms Ryan. But I don't have a personality, and I was chosen over you. A robot like me was picked to be the waiting attendant to the next CEO, while you, miss personality was not even considered. Isn't life such an irony?"
Lindsay looked taken aback.
"What?"
Her reaction made Zara satisfied. Two can play the game. Zara thought to herself.
Natalie whispered "yes, take that you little brat."
"Are you seriously proud of yourself when you licked Mrs Carter's ass to get the position?" Lindsay said, trying to act tough.
Zara rolled her eyes, the little confrontation already turned boring.
"Whatever Lindsay." Zara said dismissively and returned to her seat.
The car finally arrived at the VIP parking lot of The Watson Hotels. Several reporters and fans were also gathered there. Joel's driver parked and he stepped out of the car.
The reporters swarmed in as soon as they noticed his presence.
They ask him several questions as usual, some about his retirement, some about random dating rumors, some about him taking over his father's business, almost shoving their microphones and recorders in his face.
"Are you really engaged to Bella Fox?" A brown haired reporter asked.
Joel stopped and glared at him.
"Where on earth did y'all get this rumor from? I don't even know who Bella Fox is and no I'm not engaged to her!" Joel lashed out at the reporter, who covered a little bit in fear.
When Joel and his crew had stepped a little further away from the crowd, Damien spoke up.
"I told you to ignore sir."
"I tried. I tried but I'm damn sick of these people spreading groundless, ridiculous rumors about me. Since when did I get engaged to someone I don't even know!"
"Please calm down Joel. You still have to meet the hotel staff, they have been waiting for you." Damien said in a calm voice.
Joel groaned, "Damien. I've been on a ten hour flight, reporters and media have been on my neck for days now, asking for interviews. I'm stressed out both mentally and physically, do you really think I'd want to meet some unknown people for petty talks at the moment?"
"The hotel staff are people you'd be working with in the future, not some "unknown people"" Damien countered, air quoting the 'unknown people'.
Joel threw him a glare and said, "I'm not meeting anybody,I have made myself clear."
Zara's office telephone rang, as she typed furiously on the desktop. She picked the telephone to answer the call.
"Hello, this is The Watson Hotels, Zara Andrews speaking."
"Zara." It was Mrs Carter.
"Joel Watson just arrived at the hotel. I need you to come with me, let's do some introductions."
"Okay Mrs Carter,I'm on my way."
Zara let out a heavy sigh and dropped the telephone to make her way to Mrs Carter.
"Mr Watson, you're welcome to The Watson Hotels. I'm your waiting attendant, Zara An-"
Joel, raising his voice, turned to his P.A "Damien, I thought I specifically said, no hotel staff, why are these people still flocking around me?"
Then he turned to Zara and stared at her icily.
"Don't you guys have rules where you give guests their privacy? Is this how you have been running the hotel? Get out of my way." With that, he walked away with his crew.
Zara watched as Joel disappeared into the giant building, still trying to process what just happened.
She has heard several stories about Joel being a rude and arrogant man, so she was already prepared for random lashing out but she didn't know she'd experience it this soon.
She wondered how she would survive being his waiting attendant in the next three months. If he could tell her off for just greeting him as a form of formality, before he retired to his room, then she couldn't even imagine what it's going to be like working directly with him.
It wasn't even up to one hour before Joel Watson entered the hotel but he has already proved that he's about to break the record of the most difficult boss.
Zara let out a disheartening sigh and walked back to her office.
The elevator opened, Joel and his team stepped out and came face to face with a huge golden door, a sign which read "Penthouse" was hung on it.
"This is your residence sir." Damien announced.
"Apart from the two bodyguards permanently allocated to you, there are three other security guards at the ground floor, they are permanently at your beck and call, this is a strict order from Mr Watson." Damien stopped to check for any reaction from his boss, when he got nothing but a little eye roll and a blank look afterwards,he continued.
"Here is the master key. The hotel management has a spare one,in case of unforeseen circumstances." Damien said, handing over a card key to Joel.
Joel collected the key, swiped the key on the door handle, and opened the door. Damien cleared his throat, still expecting a response from Joel.
Joel looked back at his P.A and bodyguards waiting outside for him.
"What?" He asked, giving them a confused look.
"Errm... Do you have any instructions for them? For us?" Damien stammered, gesturing with his hands.
"No? Y'all can leave." Joel replied hesitantly.
Just as Damien was about to turn and leave the top floor with the bodyguards,Joel called him back.
"Sir?"
".... do you perhaps know....?" Joel started, pausing his sentence.
Damien's look contorted into that of confusion, wondering why his ever-confident boss was looking nervous.
"Mr Joel, is everything okay? Do you need something?"
"Well, , the woman we met on the ground floor. The ummm hotel staff....can you...do you know her name?" Joel finally said.
"What?" Damien frowned his face in confusion.
"You mean, the hotel staff who came to meet you?"
"Yes, that one. The brunette." Joel replied.
"You even noticed her hair color." Damien muttered under his breath.
"You said what?" Joel said, throwing him a glare.
"Nothing. Well, I don't know her name but I can easily find out. If I may ask,why do you want to know?"
"Don't you think I was too harsh on her earlier?" Joel asked.
That threw Damien off balance.
"S..sir?"
"I mean, she was only trying to do her job, she was also as polite as she could be, she also kinda looked nervous but I just shunned her."
"S..sir?" Damien was still dazed, which was understandable because his boss never felt remorseful. His reaction to the hotel staff earlier was nothing new to him, but Joel Watson is actually admitting that he was harsh.
Joel stepped back a bit as if to take a better look at Damien.
"Why do you keep stammering? Cat's got your tongue or something?"
‘Now this is the Joel Watson I know.’ Damien thought to himself.
"Uhmm, well, I wouldn't say you were harsh, I'd say you were stressed out and in a sour mood."
Joel was silent for a moment, before he faced Damien again, "You can go, don't bother."
He walked into the penthouse and shut the door behind him.
Zara's shift was finally over and it was time to go home. She stretched, shut down her desktop, picked up her bag, said her goodbye to Natalie, who was on night shift, and walked out of the office to head for her house.
She parked her Honda Accord at her apartment parking lot, and stepped out of the car.
Her daughter is currently at her nanny's house, which she intends to take a shower first, then go pick her up after.
Zara was about to step into her apartment building when she noticed a shadow behind the shrubs. She quickly turned back, only to find nobody around her, she dismissed it and walked insid
e.
Entering into her apartment, which is not too small but big enough for her and her daughter, she proceeded to flick on the switch, when something hit her hard on head and she went blank.
