Chapter 25: The First Break

751 Words
The silence after the failed merge attempt felt heavier than anything Lyra Vale had ever experienced. Not calm. Not peace. Just… waiting. The rune lights inside the containment chamber pulsed faintly, like a distant heartbeat that no longer fully belonged to her. Lyra stood in the center, breathing unevenly. Her hands still trembled—but she was upright. Still conscious. Still herself. At least… partially. Outside the barrier, Kael Draven did not move away. “Lyra,” he said again, voice low. “Talk to me.” “I’m here,” she whispered. But even she could hear it—her voice felt distant. Like something else was echoing behind it. The second Alpha studied the chamber carefully. “The merge did not complete,” he said calmly. Kael shot him a sharp look. “That’s supposed to be good news?” “It is unexpected,” the second Alpha replied. Lyra pressed a hand to her chest. “I stopped it,” she said quietly. Kael’s tone softened slightly. “Yes. You did.” That should have felt like victory. Instead, it felt like delay. The rune walls flickered again. And then— The First Luna’s voice returned. Not loud. Not forceful. But closer. “You cannot hold the split forever.” Lyra flinched. Kael noticed immediately. “What is it?” “She’s still here,” Lyra whispered. The second Alpha nodded slightly. “Residual imprint stability remains active.” Kael stepped closer to the barrier. “Can you remove it?” “No,” the second Alpha said. Kael exhaled sharply. “Then what is this?” The second Alpha looked at Lyra. “To determine which version survives.” Lyra froze. “…survives?” she repeated. Kael snapped, “Stop talking about her like she’s expendable!” Lyra raised a hand slightly. “Wait,” she said quietly. Her gaze lowered. “What happens if I lose?” Silence. Then the second Alpha answered. “Then the First Luna becomes dominant.” Lyra closed her eyes briefly. “And if I win?” “The imprint dissolves.” Kael immediately said, “You’re not losing anything.” But Lyra shook her head. “I feel her,” she whispered. “She’s not gone. Just waiting.” The rune lights flickered. “Correct,” the voice echoed faintly. Kael warned, “Lyra—don’t engage her.” “I’m not engaging,” she said softly. “I’m listening.” That word shifted the atmosphere. The second Alpha’s eyes narrowed. “That is not advised,” he said. But Lyra didn’t respond. Something inside her was shifting again. Not violently. Quietly. Like a door unlocking. The First Luna’s voice softened. “You are closer now.” Lyra whispered, “Closer to what?” A pause. “The fracture point.” Kael stepped forward. “Lyra, stop.” But she was already seeing something. ⸻ A corridor. Burning rune light. A woman holding her shoulders. “If they awaken you early… you must resist the first break.” ⸻ Lyra gasped and staggered. Kael reacted instantly. “Lyra!” “I saw her,” Lyra whispered. The second Alpha’s tone changed slightly. “Pre-seal memory fragments are resurfacing.” Kael snapped, “That shouldn’t be possible!” Lyra slowly looked up. “I think this has happened before,” she said. Silence. Heavy. The rune walls pulsed again. The First Luna spoke once more. “Yes.” Kael’s voice softened. “Lyra, look at me.” She did. Everything else faded. Only him remained. Kael. “I’m not losing you,” he said quietly. Lyra’s chest tightened. The second Alpha watched silently. The First Luna spoke again. “Attachment increases instability.” Lyra frowned. “No,” she whispered. “It makes me human.” The rune lights flickered—then steadied. Silence returned. The First Luna did not respond immediately. Then finally: “Then you are not ready for full awakening.” Lyra exhaled. “I don’t care,” she said softly. “I choose myself.” Kael’s eyes widened slightly. The second Alpha studied her. “…choose what?” he asked. Lyra straightened despite trembling. “I choose me,” she said. The rune lights dimmed slightly. Not gone. Not sealed. But paused. The First Luna’s voice faded. “This delay will not last.” Lyra nodded faintly. “I know.” Inside the chamber— Lyra stood between two identities. Not broken. Not merged. But still choosing.
