Chapter 1: The Ceremony of Betrayal
The air over the Silverfang Pack was too still. Not peaceful—wrong. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath, as if waiting for something terrible to happen. Lyra Vale stood in the center of the pack grounds, hands folded tightly in front of her. She forced her breathing to stay steady, even though her heart was already racing out of control. Today was supposed to be her destiny. Today, she was supposed to become Luna. Her Alpha’s mate. Kael Blackwood’s chosen partner. The woman who would stand beside him and lead the Silverfang Pack into a new era. But something felt wrong. Whispers moved through the crowd. “She looks nervous…” “Do you think it’s true?” “I heard the Alpha has been distant…” Lyra ignored them. She couldn’t afford doubt today. Not now. Not when everything she had ever worked for was finally within reach. Elders stood in a circle. Warriors lined the edges. Every pack member was present. Waiting. Watching. Judging. Then the air shifted. Power arrived before he did. Alpha Kael Blackwood stepped forward. Tall. Cold. Commanding. His presence alone made weaker wolves lower their heads instinctively. Lyra didn’t. She couldn’t. Not today. His eyes met hers for a brief second. And something inside her tightened. Not warmth. Not love. Distance. “Begin the ceremony,” an elder said. Kael walked toward her. Each step felt heavier than the last. When he stopped in front of her, the world went silent. Lyra searched his face. Looking for something. Anything. But she found nothing. No warmth. No hesitation. Just cold certainty. “I, Alpha Kael Blackwood…” His voice was calm. Too calm. “…reject you, Lyra Vale, as my mate and Luna.” Silence. The world stopped. For a second, Lyra didn’t understand. The words didn’t make sense. Reject. Mate. Luna. No. Her mind refused to accept it. Then pain exploded in her chest. The mate bond. Breaking. No—being torn apart. She gasped, stumbling slightly, hand flying to her chest. “Kael…” her voice cracked. “What are you saying?” He didn’t answer. Didn’t even look at her properly. As if she was already gone. A shadow moved behind him. A woman stepped forward. Beautiful. Calm. Smiling. Lyra’s stomach dropped. No. Not her. Anyone but her. The woman gently touched Kael’s arm. “I will stand by your side, Alpha,” she said softly. Kael did not move away. That was the answer. The crowd murmured. Some shocked. Some not at all. Lyra’s breath felt trapped in her lungs. She forced herself to stand straighter. “Why?” she asked quietly. Kael finally looked at her. Cold. Empty. “You are not strong enough to stand beside me as Luna.” The words hit like a blade. Lies. She had fought beside him. Bled for him. Saved him. Weak? No. This was not weakness. This was replacement. Lyra understood now. She wasn’t being rejected because she was weak. She was being removed. Discarded. Like something no longer needed. Something inside her snapped—but not her body. Her pride held. Her dignity held. Slowly, she stepped back. Breaking the bond herself with every step. “If I am not your Luna…” she said softly, voice steady despite the pain, “then I will become something you regret losing.” Some laughed. Some looked away. Kael said nothing. That silence hurt the most. Lyra turned. And walked away. ⸻ 🌲 Chapter 2: The Broken Bond (≈850–900 words) Three days passed. Lyra did not return. She did not beg. She did not break in front of them. But inside… Something was dying. The mate bond was still there. Not whole. Not alive. Just… broken and bleeding. It pulsed in her chest like an open wound that refused to close. Every breath hurt. Every memory hurt. But she kept walking. Kept surviving. No pack. No protection. No Luna title. Only herself. On the third night, she crossed into forbidden territory. The forest was darker here. Heavier. Wrong. Lyra stopped. Every instinct screamed at her to turn back. But she had nowhere left to go. Then— A growl. Low. Close. Her body froze. From the shadows, a black wolf stepped forward. Massive. Golden eyes glowing in the dark. Alpha-level strength. Not rogue. Something worse. Something controlled. Lyra didn’t run. She should have. But something inside her… reacted. The wolf studied her. Slow. Careful. Then stepped closer. Lyra stood her ground. Heart pounding. Then— The wolf shifted. Bone cracked. Fur melted into skin. A man stood there. Tall. Scarred. Dangerous. His eyes still faintly gold. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said coldly. Lyra narrowed her eyes. “And you shouldn’t be staring at me like that,” she shot back. A faint smirk appeared. “Interesting,” he said. “A rejected Luna with teeth.” The forest shifted again. And somewhere deeper… Another presence watched. Smiling.
