Chapter 4: The Clash of Alphas

787 Words
The forest felt heavier after the second man appeared. Lyra Vale stood frozen between them, her instincts screaming at her to move, but every direction felt wrong. Two powerful presences. Two sets of golden pressure crushing the air around her. And her— A rejected Luna with no pack shield left to protect her. The first man—Kael Draven—didn’t look at her anymore. His attention was locked on the second man. Cold. Sharp. Controlled. “Step away from her,” Kael said quietly. The second man smiled like he had been waiting for those words. “And if I don’t?” The tension snapped instantly. The air between them thickened, like the forest itself was holding its breath. Lyra took a small step back, her pulse rising. This was not a conversation. This was a warning. Kael Draven shifted slightly—barely noticeable—but the pressure in the air changed. Dominance. Alpha-level force spreading through the clearing. Leaves trembled. Even the wind seemed to hesitate. The second man didn’t move. He only tilted his head, still smiling. “Careful,” he said lightly. “You’re going to scare her.” Kael’s eyes flicked toward Lyra for the first time. Just a glance. But it was enough for her chest to tighten. Not comfort. Not safety. Something more complicated. Recognition. Then Kael’s gaze hardened again. “She is not your concern,” he said. The second man chuckled softly. “That’s interesting,” he replied. “Because she doesn’t look like someone who belongs to anyone.” Lyra’s fingers curled. They were talking about her like she was a possession. Not a person. Not a woman. A claim. “I don’t belong to either of you,” Lyra said sharply. Silence. Both men looked at her at the same time. That alone made the pressure worse. Kael’s expression didn’t change. But something in his eyes shifted slightly. The second man’s smile widened. “See?” he said. “She speaks for herself.” Kael took one step forward. The ground beneath him seemed to darken with pressure. “You are in my territory,” he said to the second man. “You will leave.” The second man sighed dramatically. “Always so serious.” Then his gaze sharpened. “But no.” The word landed like a strike. The forest went still. Kael’s aura surged instantly. A wave of pure Alpha dominance crashed through the clearing. Lyra staggered slightly, forced to brace herself. It was overwhelming. Crushing. The kind of power that made weaker wolves kneel without thinking. But the second man— He didn’t move. Didn’t even blink. Instead, his own energy rose. Not heavier. Not stronger in the same way. But sharper. Unstable. Dangerous in a different form. The air between them twisted violently. Two Alpha forces colliding. The trees creaked. Branches shook. Lyra’s breath caught. “This is insane…” she whispered. Kael’s voice dropped lower. “Last warning.” The second man smiled faintly. “I don’t respond well to warnings.” And then it happened. Kael moved first. Fast. A blur of motion. The ground cracked where he stepped, and in an instant he was in front of the second man. Fist aimed directly at his chest. But the second man shifted sideways—just enough. The strike missed. Barely. He laughed softly. “Too slow.” Kael didn’t respond. He attacked again. Strikes faster this time. Controlled. Precise. Deadly. The second man dodged each one with infuriating ease, stepping back like it was a game. Lyra watched in shock. They were not just fighting. They were testing each other. Measuring strength. Measuring dominance. A battle of Alphas without full transformation. Kael’s patience snapped slightly. A low growl escaped him. The pressure increased again. Lyra felt her knees weaken. Her mate bond scar pulsed painfully in her chest. Wrong. Everything here was wrong. Suddenly— The second man caught Kael’s wrist. For the first time, Kael paused. Their eyes locked. For a fraction of a second, everything went still. Then the second man leaned closer and spoke softly. “She reacts to both of us,” he said. Kael’s eyes darkened. A deeper emotion flickered beneath his control. Not anger. Something far more dangerous. Possession. In that instant— Kael’s power exploded outward. The ground cracked violently. A shockwave spread through the forest. Lyra was thrown backward. She hit the ground hard, gasping. The two men stopped instantly. Both turning toward her at the same time. Lyra lifted her head slowly, breath uneven. And for the first time— She realized something terrifying. Their fight wasn’t really about territory. Or dominance. Or even power. It was about her.
