Chapter 5: Caught Between Storms

847 Words
Lyra Vale woke up to pain. Not just in her body—but in her chest. The bond scar pulsed again, like an open wound refusing to heal. Every breath felt heavier than the last. She slowly pushed herself up from the forest floor. Cold ground. Broken leaves. Silent air. No sign of the two men. But their presence still lingered. Like smoke that refused to disappear. Lyra clenched her teeth. “Get up,” she whispered to herself. “You survived worse.” But her voice sounded weaker than she wanted. A branch snapped nearby. Instantly, her body tensed. She turned sharply— Nothing. Just trees. Stillness. Too still. Then— “Resting already?” A voice. Lyra froze. Slowly, she turned her head. Kael Draven stood a few steps away. Watching her. Calm again. Controlled again. Like nothing had happened last night. Like he hadn’t nearly destroyed the forest with his power. Lyra narrowed her eyes. “Do you always appear without warning?” Kael didn’t respond immediately. His gaze dropped briefly to her shoulder, then back to her face. “You’re injured,” he said. “I’m fine.” “That wasn’t a question.” Lyra forced herself to stand straighter, ignoring the ache in her body. “I said I’m fine.” A silence stretched between them. Different from before. Less violent. But heavier. Kael stepped closer. Lyra instinctively stepped back. He stopped immediately. Something flickered in his eyes—gone too fast to read. “You don’t trust easily,” he said. “I don’t trust strangers who try to fight over me,” she replied sharply. That made him pause. A faint shift in his expression. Not anger. Something closer to… acknowledgement. Before either of them could continue— A second presence entered the clearing. Lyra felt it before she saw it. A lighter energy. Unstable. Almost playful. She turned. The second man leaned casually against a tree again. Like he had never left. Like he belonged everywhere he stood. “Good morning,” he said lightly. “You both look terrible.” Kael’s eyes darkened instantly. “You again.” The man smiled. “Miss me?” Lyra rubbed her temples. “This is a nightmare,” she muttered. The second man pushed off the tree and walked closer. His eyes moved to Lyra first. Not Kael. Not the fight. Her. “You’re still here,” he said softly. “I was expecting you to run.” Lyra crossed her arms. “I considered it.” “But you didn’t,” he replied. Something about the way he looked at her made her uneasy. Not aggressive. Not cold. Focused. Like she was the only thing in the forest that mattered. Kael stepped slightly between them. “Stop staring at her,” he said. The second man sighed. “You’re very protective for someone who rejected her existence in your life.” That sentence hit the air like a blade. Lyra stiffened. Kael’s expression changed slightly. A flicker. Just a flicker. But real. “You don’t understand what happened,” Kael said quietly. The second man tilted his head. “Then explain it.” Silence. Lyra’s heart beat faster. This was the first time Kael looked… uncertain. But he didn’t answer. Instead, he said, “She is not part of this.” Lyra let out a bitter laugh. “Not part of this?” she repeated. “You dragged me into it by existing in my territory and fighting over me.” Both men went silent. For a moment, only the wind moved. Then the second man spoke again. “Fighting over you?” he repeated, amused. “Is that what you think this is?” Lyra’s gaze hardened. “What else would I think?” The second man stepped closer. Kael didn’t move. But the tension rose instantly. “I’m not fighting for you,” the second man said. A pause. “I’m curious about you.” That honesty made Lyra uneasy. “And that’s supposed to make me feel better?” she asked. He smiled slightly. “No.” Another pause. Then softer— “But it should make you feel seen.” Lyra froze. That hit differently. Not like Kael’s cold rejection. Not like dominance. Something quieter. Dangerous in another way. Kael’s voice cut through the moment. “Enough.” His aura pressed down again. But this time, Lyra didn’t collapse. She stood her ground. Barely. But she did. Both men noticed. The second man’s smile deepened. Kael’s gaze sharpened. “You’re adapting,” Kael said. Lyra looked between them. “I’m tired of being pushed around,” she said quietly. Silence. For the first time, neither Alpha responded immediately. Then— A distant howl echoed through the forest. Sharp. Urgent. Not from either of them. Lyra’s body tensed. Kael’s expression changed instantly. The second man straightened slightly. “That’s not mine,” he said. Kael’s eyes darkened. “…Mine either.” Lyra felt her stomach drop. Something else was coming. And it was not interested in watching.
