Chapter 8: The Awakening Breaks Free

746 Words
The forest no longer felt like a forest. It felt like it was listening. Lyra Vale knelt on the ground, breathing unevenly, as the strange light around her slowly faded. But the energy didn’t disappear. It stayed in the air—heavy, alive, and watching. Kael Draven stepped closer again, slower this time. Careful. Not like an Alpha approaching a threat. Like someone approaching something unknown. “Lyra,” he said quietly. “Look at me.” Her hands were still shaking. “I didn’t do that.” The second man let out a low breath. “Yes, you did.” Lyra shook her head quickly. “No. I can’t do anything like that.” Kael stopped a few steps away from her. “That wasn’t normal,” he said. “That was an awakening.” The word made her stomach tighten. The creature that called her a “key” still stood at a distance, watching without emotion now. As if it had confirmed what it came to see. Lyra forced herself to stand, though her legs felt weak. “What am I?” she asked again, voice sharp but broken. Silence. Neither Alpha answered immediately. That silence was worse than any truth. Finally, the second man spoke. “You’re not just a rejected Luna.” Lyra’s eyes snapped to him. “Stop saying that!” “It’s the truth,” Kael said calmly. Lyra’s breath caught. “Then tell me what it means.” Kael studied her for a moment. “You were sealed.” The world seemed to stop. Lyra let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “Sealed? Like an object?” Kael didn’t deny it. That was answer enough. Her chest tightened painfully. “No,” she whispered. “I was born in Silverfang. I’m just—” “You were born there,” Kael interrupted. “But you are not from there.” Lyra shook her head. “That doesn’t make sense.” But something inside her reacted to the words. A flicker. A memory trying to surface. She saw a woman holding a newborn child. A faint mark glowing on the baby’s skin. Elders standing in fear. And a voice saying: If she awakens, balance breaks. Lyra gasped and stumbled back. Kael moved slightly. “Lyra.” “Don’t come closer,” she said quickly. The air around her shifted again. Not stable. Not controlled. Kael noticed instantly. “She’s destabilizing again.” “I can see that,” the second man muttered. Lyra’s breathing grew uneven. “I don’t understand what’s happening to me.” The energy beneath her skin stirred again, responding to her emotions. A small pulse of force pushed outward. The ground cracked slightly. Lyra froze in fear. “No… I didn’t mean to—” Another pulse followed. Stronger. Kael reacted immediately, stepping forward and grabbing her wrist. “Focus,” he said firmly. Lyra flinched but didn’t pull away. “I can’t control it,” she whispered. “You don’t control it,” Kael said. “You stabilize it.” The second man watched closely but didn’t interrupt. Kael’s voice lowered. “Breathe.” Lyra tried. It shook. “Again,” he said. She inhaled slowly. The energy trembled but didn’t explode. Kael didn’t let go. “Good. Again.” Lyra followed his voice, forcing her breathing steady. The pressure in the air slowly began to settle. The creature in the distance tilted its head slightly. “Interesting,” it said softly. The second man glanced at it. “You brought her here for this.” The creature didn’t deny it. Kael’s eyes darkened. “You planned this.” A faint smile returned to the creature’s face. “She was always going to awaken,” it said. “The question was who would stand closest when she did.” Lyra looked up sharply. “What does that mean?” But the creature’s body began to dissolve into shadow. Kael stepped forward. “Wait.” It was already gone. Silence returned. But it didn’t feel safe. Lyra slowly pulled her wrist away from Kael. Her voice was quieter now. “So I’m not normal.” Kael hesitated. The second man answered instead. “No.” Lyra looked between them. Two Alphas. Two truths she didn’t understand. Kael finally spoke again. “This changes everything.” Lyra swallowed hard. “Good,” she said softly. “Because I’m tired of not knowing who I am.”
