Chapter 12: The Silent Claim

805 Words
The tension from the last confrontation had not faded. It had only changed shape. Lyra Vale could still feel it in the air even after Kael Draven and the second Alpha had left the chamber. Not just their presence—but the echo of it. Like something invisible had been pulled tight between them… and her. She sat on the edge of the stone bed, staring at her hands. They didn’t feel like hers anymore. Not fully. A soft knock came again. This time, she didn’t wait. “Come in,” she said flatly. The door opened. Kael stepped inside alone. Lyra immediately noticed something different. He looked more tired than before. Not physically. Emotionally. That alone made her uneasy. “You’re back again,” she said. “I didn’t leave far,” he replied. Lyra let out a short breath. “You and him are exhausting.” A faint flicker passed through Kael’s eyes. “He shouldn’t be near you.” She raised an eyebrow. “And you should?” Silence. That silence again. Lyra stood slowly. “You both keep talking like I belong somewhere between you.” Kael’s jaw tightened slightly. “That’s not what this is.” “Then explain it,” she snapped. Kael looked away briefly. That hesitation made her chest tighten. He never hesitated like this before her awakening. “You’re destabilizing the balance between bloodlines,” he said carefully. “And the second Alpha… he doesn’t approach things without purpose.” Lyra crossed her arms. “So I’m a project to him.” Kael’s voice dropped. “You’re not a project.” “Then what am I?” she demanded again. Kael didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stepped closer than before. Not too close. But closer than he usually allowed himself. And that alone changed the atmosphere. Lyra noticed it instantly. The pull inside her chest responded. Faster. Stronger. Her breath caught slightly. Kael noticed too. His gaze sharpened. “So it’s stronger today,” he said quietly. Lyra frowned. “What is?” “The connection,” he replied. She shook her head quickly. “Stop calling it that.” Kael studied her for a moment. Then he said something lower. “I didn’t expect it to affect me too.” Lyra froze. That was new. Kael continued, more carefully now. “I thought I could control it. Ignore it. But your presence… it reacts.” Lyra took a step back. “Don’t say that like it’s normal.” “It’s not,” he admitted. That honesty hit differently. She didn’t know what to do with it. Before she could respond, another presence entered the edge of her awareness again. Not a knock this time. Just arrival. The second Alpha stood in the doorway. Watching. As if he had been there longer than he appeared. “I see,” he said calmly. Lyra sighed. “Do you ever leave me alone?” “No,” he answered simply. Kael turned slightly. “Leave.” The second Alpha ignored him completely. His eyes stayed on Lyra. “You feel it too now,” he said softly. “The pull between you and him.” Lyra narrowed her eyes. “Stop speaking like I’m not in control of my own body.” The second Alpha tilted his head slightly. “Are you?” Silence dropped hard. Kael stepped forward. “Enough.” But Lyra raised her hand slightly, stopping him. Her gaze stayed on the second Alpha. “What are you trying to say?” she asked. A faint smile touched his lips. “I’m saying,” he replied, “that you are reacting exactly as predicted.” Lyra’s stomach tightened. “Predicted by who?” Neither Alpha answered. And that silence told her everything she needed to know. She took a slow breath. “So I wasn’t just sealed,” she said quietly. “I was… planned.” Kael’s expression darkened slightly. “Lyra—” But she cut him off. “No,” she said firmly. “Don’t soften it.” The room fell into silence again. Heavy. Controlled. The second Alpha finally spoke. “Your awakening was never random,” he said. “Only delayed.” Lyra felt the floor shift beneath her—not physically, but emotionally. “Delayed for what?” she asked. Kael didn’t answer. The second Alpha did. “For the moment you would no longer belong to anyone.” Silence. Then Lyra whispered: “So what am I supposed to do now?” Kael finally spoke, voice low. “Survive it.” The second Alpha added softly: “And choose.” Lyra looked between them. And for the first time— She understood the real danger was not her power. It was the decision waiting at the end of it.
