Chapter 17: The Pack Turns

784 Words
The order was immediate. “Contain her.” Those two words echoed louder than the screams that had just faded. Lyra Vale barely had time to breathe before the atmosphere around her changed completely. Guards moved in from every direction. Not attacking. Closing in. Kael Draven stepped forward instantly. “Stop.” But the elder didn’t even look at him. “She is unstable. The pack is at risk.” “I said stop,” Kael repeated, voice lower now. The second Alpha didn’t move—but his eyes sharpened slightly, scanning everything like he was calculating outcomes no one else could see. Lyra stood in the center, still shaking. “I’m not unstable,” she said quietly. No one responded. That hurt more than the energy explosion. Whispers spread through the crowd again. “She almost destroyed the courtyard…” “She’s dangerous…” “We should have expelled her when she was rejected…” Lyra’s fingers curled tightly. Rejected. Always that word. Kael noticed her shift immediately. “Lyra—don’t listen.” But the words were already inside her. And something inside her answered them. A faint pulse. Then another. Kael saw it. “Everyone back—now!” But it was too late. A guard stepped forward too quickly. Lyra flinched— And a small burst of energy snapped outward. It didn’t destroy anything this time. But it pushed everyone back hard enough to stagger. Gasps erupted. “That’s proof!” someone shouted. Lyra froze. “I didn’t mean to—” she whispered. But no one cared about intention anymore. The elder raised his hand again. “Enough.” His gaze locked onto her. “She will be isolated immediately.” Kael stepped in front of her fully now. “No,” he said firmly. The elder’s voice hardened. “You are interfering with pack law.” “I’m protecting her,” Kael snapped back. Lyra looked at him sharply. Protecting. That word felt strange coming from him. The second Alpha finally spoke. “She cannot be contained using standard restraint methods,” he said calmly. Kael shot him a look. “Not helping.” “I’m stating fact,” the second Alpha replied. Lyra’s breathing grew uneven again. Not from power this time. From pressure. From eyes. From judgment. From being looked at like something broken. “I didn’t ask for any of this,” she said quietly. No one answered. That silence became heavier than the chaos. The elder stepped forward slightly. “You are a threat born within our borders.” Lyra’s head snapped up. “I was born here.” “Then you are a mistake we must correct,” he replied. Something inside Lyra snapped at that. A sharp pulse surged through her chest. Kael immediately grabbed her wrist. “Lyra—don’t—” But it was already too late. The energy flared again. Not outward this time. Inward. Her body shook violently. The ground beneath her cracked slightly again. But instead of exploding outward— The energy folded back into her. Lyra gasped sharply. “What is happening…” she whispered. The second Alpha’s expression changed for the first time. “Self-collapse reaction,” he said quietly. “It’s turning inward.” Kael tightened his grip slightly. “That’s worse.” Lyra looked at both of them, eyes wide. “I can’t stop it,” she said. Kael’s voice softened. “You don’t have to do it alone.” That sentence made her pause. But the elder cut in sharply. “Enough emotional interference.” He raised his hand again. “Seize her.” The guards moved instantly. Kael stepped fully in front of Lyra now. And this time— The second Alpha moved too. Not to stop Kael. Not to support the guards. But to stand beside him. For the first time, both Alphas were aligned. Lyra noticed it immediately. “So now you both agree,” she whispered. Kael didn’t look away from the guards. “We don’t agree. We’re just not letting you get taken.” The second Alpha added calmly, “Not yet.” Lyra’s chest tightened. “What does that mean?” she asked. But no one answered. Because the guards were already too close. And Lyra— Was already shaking again. The bond inside her didn’t feel like power anymore. It felt like something trying to break free. Kael glanced back at her once. Just once. “Stay behind me,” he said quietly. But Lyra barely heard him. Because in that moment— She realized something terrifying again. It wasn’t just the pack turning on her. It was her body starting to turn against itself.
