Chapter 20: The Isolation Order

852 Words
Silence collapsed over the courtyard. Not the calm kind. The suffocating kind. Lyra Vale’s words still lingered in the air like an echo no one wanted to acknowledge. I was sealed. Kael Draven did not release her. Not even for a second. His grip on her arm tightened slightly—not painful, but firm enough to keep her grounded. The second Alpha watched them both without expression. The elder finally stepped forward. His voice was lower now. Heavier. “Remove her from the public grounds.” Kael’s head snapped up immediately. “No.” The elder didn’t look at him this time. “This is no longer a request.” Lyra’s breath caught. Guards shifted again. But this time, they didn’t approach aggressively. They surrounded. Controlled. Calculated. Kael stepped forward, placing himself directly between Lyra and them. “You are making a mistake,” he said coldly. The elder’s eyes narrowed. “You already made one by defying order.” Kael didn’t respond. Because Lyra moved slightly behind him. Just enough to speak. “I’m not going anywhere,” she said quietly. Her voice was steady. But her hands were still trembling. The second Alpha’s gaze shifted toward her. “That is not your decision anymore,” he said. Lyra looked at him sharply. “It never was, according to you people.” A pause. Then the elder raised his hand again. “Containment protocol is now active.” Kael’s expression changed instantly. “No,” he said sharply. “You are not activating that.” But the command had already been spoken. The ground beneath Lyra shimmered faintly. Runes. Old ones. Hidden beneath the courtyard stone. Lyra stepped back instinctively. “What is that?” she whispered. Kael’s voice tightened. “A sealing lattice.” Her eyes widened. “Sealing…?” The second Alpha finally spoke again. “It suppresses resonance completely,” he said calmly. “You will be unable to trigger or amplify bond energy.” Lyra turned toward him. “So I’m being locked again.” Kael snapped his gaze to the elder. “This is excessive.” The elder’s voice was final. “It is necessary.” Lyra’s chest tightened again—but not from power this time. From fear. Not of pain. Of loss. Of being erased again. “I just told you I remember something,” she said quietly. “A child. A chamber. A seal.” No response. Kael turned slightly toward her. “Lyra, listen to me.” But she shook her head. “No,” she whispered. “I’m done being told to listen.” The runes beneath her feet began to glow brighter. The sealing lattice activating. Kael stepped forward instantly. “Stop this!” Guards moved in. Not toward Lyra. Toward Kael. The second Alpha didn’t intervene. But his eyes sharpened slightly. Kael looked around once. Then made a decision. A dangerous one. He turned slightly toward Lyra. “Stay close,” he said quietly. Lyra frowned. “What are you doing?” Kael didn’t answer. Instead— He raised his hand. And shattered the edge of the containment field forming around her. Gasps erupted instantly. “He broke the lattice entry point!” The elder’s expression darkened. “Kael Draven!” But Kael didn’t stop. He grabbed Lyra’s wrist and pulled her fully behind him. “I’m getting you out,” he said firmly. Lyra stared at him. “Out? Where?” Kael didn’t answer. Because the second Alpha finally moved. He stepped forward—blocking the exit path. Not aggressively. Not violently. Just… decisively. “No,” he said. Kael’s eyes darkened instantly. “Move.” The second Alpha met his gaze. “Not yet,” he repeated. Lyra looked between them, heart racing. “You’re doing this again,” she said softly. “Both of you.” The bond inside her chest flickered faintly—reacting to the tension even under suppression. Kael noticed immediately. The second Alpha did too. Kael tightened his grip slightly. “They’re locking you away, Lyra.” “I know,” she whispered. The elder raised his voice again. “Proceed.” The lattice surged brighter. Energy lines began closing inward. Lyra felt it. The pressure. Not pain. Absence. Like something inside her was being muted. Her breath trembled. “I can feel it disappearing,” she whispered. Kael’s voice lowered. “I won’t let them take it from you.” The second Alpha finally spoke. “You cannot stop it permanently,” he said. Kael snapped, “Watch me.” Lyra looked at both of them. Then softly asked: “Why does it feel like I’ve been locked away before?” Silence. That question hit harder than the sealing lattice. Even Kael paused. The second Alpha’s expression changed slightly. Not surprise. Recognition. The elder’s voice cut through sharply. “Complete the isolation.” The lattice fully activated. Light surged around Lyra. Kael reached for her instantly. But the barrier separated them. For a brief second— Their eyes met. Lyra and Kael. Then the world shifted. And Lyra disappeared into containment.
