Chapter 22: The First Luna

799 Words
The words hung in the air like a blade that refused to fall. You are not the first Luna to be sealed here. Lyra Vale didn’t move. Not at first. Her mind tried to reject it—like it was too large to fit inside anything she had ever known. Outside the containment chamber, Kael Draven went completely still. Even the second Alpha didn’t speak again immediately. Silence pressed in from all sides. Then Lyra whispered: “…the first?” Her voice was barely audible. But it carried. The second Alpha responded calmly. “Yes.” Kael’s voice cut in instantly. “Explain.” A pause. Longer this time. Then the second Alpha spoke again. “The system has failed before.” Lyra stepped closer to the rune wall again, though she couldn’t feel its energy anymore. “Failed how?” she asked. Silence. Then Kael answered, his tone lower now. “Lunas like you are rare,” he said. “But not unique in history.” Lyra’s chest tightened. “So what happened to them?” No one answered immediately. That silence was heavier than any restraint spell. Finally, the second Alpha spoke. “They were sealed.” Lyra’s breath caught. “Like me,” she said softly. “Yes,” he replied. Kael’s voice sharpened. “That’s not the full truth.” A pause. The second Alpha didn’t deny it. That alone confirmed it. Lyra slowly lowered herself to sit against the cold stone wall. Her voice came quieter now. “How many?” Silence. Then the second Alpha answered. “Three recorded cases.” Kael added, almost reluctantly, “Before you.” Lyra closed her eyes. Three. That number echoed strangely inside her chest. Not fear. Recognition. Like something in her was aligning to a pattern she hadn’t seen before. “What happened to them?” she asked again. Kael didn’t answer this time. The second Alpha did. “The first Luna awakened fully.” Lyra opened her eyes. “And?” A pause. Then— “She destroyed her pack.” Silence fell again. Even Kael didn’t speak. Lyra’s breathing slowed. “…destroyed?” she repeated. “Yes,” the second Alpha said. “Not physically alone. Structurally. Emotionally. The bond system collapsed within her territory.” Lyra stared at the wall. “That sounds like me,” she whispered. Kael immediately responded. “No.” But his voice lacked its usual certainty. Lyra turned her head slightly toward where she knew Kael stood. “You’re not sure,” she said softly. Kael didn’t answer. That was answer enough. The second Alpha continued. “The second Luna resisted awakening.” Lyra frowned slightly. “What happened to her?” “System rejection,” he said simply. Kael added quietly, “She lost all bond connection permanently.” Lyra’s stomach tightened. “And the third?” she asked. Silence. Longer this time. Then the second Alpha spoke. “The third never reached full awakening.” Lyra’s voice dropped. “…she died?” Kael answered softly. “Yes.” The chamber felt colder after that word. Lyra hugged her knees slightly. “So I’m the fourth,” she said. No one corrected her. That silence confirmed it again. Lyra exhaled slowly. “That’s why I was sealed before,” she whispered. Kael’s voice softened slightly. “Lyra…” But she didn’t look up. “Because they’re afraid I’ll become like her,” she said. The first Luna. The one who destroyed everything. The rune walls flickered faintly. As if reacting. The second Alpha noticed immediately. “Your memory resonance is increasing,” he said. Kael stepped closer to the barrier. “What does that mean?” “It means,” the second Alpha replied, “she is aligning with the sealed imprint.” Lyra lifted her head slightly. “Imprint?” she asked. A pause. Then— “The First Luna’s residual consciousness is still embedded in this containment system.” Silence. That hit differently. Kael’s voice sharpened. “You never mentioned that.” “I was not asked,” the second Alpha replied. Lyra slowly stood again. “…so she’s here,” she said quietly. A flicker of light moved through the runes. Not random. Not mechanical. Intentional. Lyra stepped closer. “Show me,” she whispered. Kael immediately reacted. “Lyra, don’t—” But it was too late. The rune wall pulsed. And then— A voice echoed inside the chamber. Not Kael’s. Not the second Alpha’s. Older. Fractured. Familiar in a way that made Lyra’s entire body go still. “You finally remembered…” Lyra froze completely. Kael went silent. Even the second Alpha stopped speaking. The rune light flared brighter. And inside the containment chamber— Something began to awaken with her.
