  EVE   What the hell was going on?   Marta stood in front of my dad, her voice softer than I'd ever heard it. There was something in the way they were talking—something that didn't sound like boss and employee. It felt deeper, personal. It made my stomach twist.   I blinked, once, twice, trying to process it.   "What the hell is going on, Marta?" I asked, my voice shaky but loud enough to make both of them turn toward me.   Marta froze.
