The moment I walked into the house, my mother slapped me.
The sound cracked through the hallway before I could even close the door. My head snapped to the side, my cheek burning so bad it felt like fire.
"Mom—"
"How dare you, Eve?" she shouted, her voice trembling with fury. "How dare you try to take your sister's man away from her? How can you do something so disgusting to your own family?"
Her words hit harder than her hand.
"Mom, please—"
"What is wrong with you?" she cut me off, her voice rising with every word. "What the hell is your problem, Eve?"
My throat tightened. Tears burned behind my eyes, but I blinked them away. Crying would only make it worse. I could already feel my pulse pounding in my ears, my entire body shaking.
