I sat on the highest point of the tallest pine tree in the forest. My left arm draped over my left knee while my right leg hung. Roman had the wolves training, testing their skills and they didn’t disappoint. The forest was calm, but I could smell the emotion of the werewolves below.
Fierceness, loyalty and pride. With a healthy mix of anger as they played into their roles of offense and defense.
They knew how to fight and defend themselves in both their human and wolf forms. No doubt something Roman ingrained into them from a young age. ‘A wolf is only as strong as his human counterpart.’
And they didn’t hold anything back. None of them did. They were fierce and strong fighters.
“They give me the shiver’s,” Danté says.
I chuckled. It’s not like he hasn’t fought Rogue Wolves, Vampires and Lycans alike.
“The children scare you D?” Kade asks with a chuckle of his own.
He nods. “I don’t care what you bastards say. They know what they’re doing. Rogues are senile and have lost all sense of thought and strategy and emotions. This is a pack that will leave you for dead in a heartbeat without so much as a glance back.” Danté makes an exaggerated shiver that no longer comes as naturally.
His outburst has me chuckling because he wasn’t wrong with his assessment of St. John Pack. The more I watched them on the field, the more I realized that Roman was keeping his promise.
Pride filled my heart. He’s done well, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from an Alpha of his caliber.
Then I saw her, her hair wisping behind her as she locked eyes with the giant black wolf that I had no doubt was the Alpha in succession. They never took their eyes off each other. He snaps his vicious canines at her and I see the glint in her eyes.
She was toying with him. Why? I would never understand. It had to be a sibling thing. Of course, I would never know myself. I lost my little sister long before I could save her from the very monster that kept ripping everything away from me.
She did amazing, just like the last time I saw her spar with the grey wolf. The young Alpha seemed abashed that he lost against his little sister, but it didn’t deter him from congratulating her for her win over him. Her reflexes were good and she was trained well in combat, so it didn’t surprise me that she had one over the young Alpha.
She was prepared for the war of a lifetime and that’s all I could have hoped for.
“Fitting,” Kade says.
“What is?”
Kade nodded down to my mate, surrounded by her brother, the boy from the first time we were here and then I saw her and a blond male that was far too close for comfort.
“She’s one hell of a warrior,” Dante adds.
I couldn’t help the twitch of my left eyebrow as I saw the male pull her onto him while I fought back a growl. “That she is. I have to give it to Roman. She has impeccable skills.”
“She’s going to make a great Queen,” Kade said, and I saw his forest green eyes shimmer to their silver color.
He was right. She would make a great Queen. Worthy of her subjects, worthy of leading while I stood behind her. Because my place would always be behind her. We just had to get there first if she’d have me.
I shoved my hands in my pockets. “Let’s hope the Queen gets crowned.” I gritted my teeth, turning my attention back onto the field below.
Soon the wolves were benched and I could see Emory and Alayah take the field along with the young fledglings. I didn’t recognize the young vampires that were already going through some defensive counter maneuvers. While Emory and Alayah sparred a little.
Alayah was fast, but what Vampire wasn’t, Emory easily dodged her blows. His ice-blue eyes shined in that magical way. She had her mate by his balls. That much was obvious. The mate bond was something else, it didn’t matter the species. Especially for us males. Our mate was the only one that could bring us to our knees before her. They underestimate the power they have over us and it’s not something we like to admit to, but it was true. That and the bond made sure we were on a leash, per-say.
But he was an entire different breed of Vampire. He was part of my Guard for a reason. While Alayah was birthed.
That didn’t deter her though. She gave him everything she had and he took it. Well, more like he dodged through her attacks, but soon it turned into an intimate interaction between mates. A dance of the fittest. But Emory would always succumb to his mate.
Her palms made contact with his pecs and his hands automatically gripped her delicate wrists, pulling her close to his hardened body. Emory snakes a hand to the small of her back and dips his head to stake his claim on his mate's lips.
The kids went crazy howling, clapping and all as Emory and Alayah pulled away from each other panting. You wouldn’t think him as Commander of my guard just by looking at him. His eyes still held his boyish features, making him look much younger than his nine hundred and fifty years.
But alas, he was beyond wise and, for once, I was glad that he had decided to commute between teaching here and back home. Of course, Alayah loved her students. She wouldn’t give up being a teacher for anything in the world. She taught at St. John Academy and my Kingdom. It didn’t seem to phase her as little Emmerette was only three and still getting the hang of being a toddler.
He was beyond intelligent for a three-year-old, but his strength was also somewhat interesting. I had no doubt that once he grew up he’d make an exceptional vampire given who his parents are.
The fledglings below seemed to settle down and we took it as an opportunity to jump down to the ground.
Ezra had a huge smile on her face that made that tiny dimple of her right cheek pop and, with much enthusiasm, was the first one down, followed by Kade who had a determined look on his face, who decided to throw himself backwards, followed by Danté and his signature eye roll and then myself.
As soon as my feet hit the ground, hissing noises filled my ears and I caught the stiffening of all three of them, their eyes shifting from their natural color to silver and back.
Disbelief is obvious in their gazes.
Ezra, Kade and Danté all make terrifying eye contact, but I already knew what it was and soon the younglings that were mated to them would find out as well.
I tried to give them a look of encouragement. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that they would all find their fated mates in the same institution that mine was in.
But, alas, I was grateful. I sent a silent prayer to the Goddesses above thanking them for the bonds that I had no doubt would happen tonight.
