Blurb

That morning, Eleanor saw him beside her closest friend where he should never have been. Before the vows came, she stood in white lace and stopped everything right there. Two hundred faces watched while silence swallowed the room. By sunrise the following day, papers arrived at her door - both pink slip and eviction notice together. Nursing had been her life for years, yet they let her go without warning. Keys turned useless when the landlord changed the locks. No savings, no home, no love - just empty hands and heavier breaths. Everything gone by Tuesday afternoon, like wind scattering ash.

Out of options, she replies to a strange ad, ends up face-to-face with Theodore Blackwood. He runs Blackwood Maritime, a giant in global shipping, emotionless, sharp-edged. Love isn’t on his mind. What he requires is a temporary spouse - twelve months - to claim what's owed him. Without that, his grandfather Reginald will pass everything to Leopold, the cunning cousin waiting in the wings.

Here's the deal, straightforward yet harsh

- One year of marriage.

- Appear as the perfect, loving couple in public.

- Never fall in love.

Half a decade of work wraps up with five million landing in Eleanor's account once the deal finishes.

Eleanor arrives at Theodore’s grand home, signing papers without a smile. Inside, the air feels cold despite the opulence. At first, they speak little, each word measured and stiff. Yet sharing space turns out to be riskier than planned. Her calm presence chips away at his guarded silence. In return, his raw honesty - rare and sharp - starts mending what was broken inside her.

Out of nowhere, late talks begin to matter more than expected. Comfort finds them during quiet hours, slipping past defenses they thought were solid. Chemistry sparks despite promises made in haste. Galas feel hollow when real emotions start showing up uninvited. Victoria appears again - flashy, sure of herself - and suddenly the past isn’t staying buried. Her eyes lock on Theodore like he was always meant to be hers. Secrets long tucked away begin rattling loose. Family pressure shifts into something heavier, harder to ignore. Every rule they built together now wobbles under new weight.

Only when morning sickness gives her away does Eleanor admit the truth about the baby. With weeks left on the agreement, old lies crawl back like shadows at dusk. Money waits in accounts neither has touched. A single choice looms - exit clean or risk everything on something that feels too much like fate.

A shattered past brings two strangers close when duty binds them together. Not just chance, but circumstance pushes a caregiver into the orbit of a man marked by wealth and pain. Healing begins in silence, grows through small moments. What looks like obligation turns softer, deeper, without warning. Trust forms slowly, built on glances, shared stillness. The strongest promises are never signed, only felt. Love arrives not with speeches, but in quiet acts. Rules fade when emotion speaks louder than words.

Broken Vows
Into the quiet room stepped Eleanor Grace Whitmore, the latch clicking behind her like a bone snapping. Her breath caught - something inside just broke. Marcus was f*****g Sophia on the leather sofa. Back bent against the wall, he stood with pants at his heels. She - her dress bunched at her hips, thighs gripping him hard - was pressed right there beside him. The air smelled like wine and perfume gone sour. Out of nowhere, echoes cut through. Shapes shifted without warning. A stab from behind - sudden, sharp. Nothing stayed hidden that day. A gasp caught in her throat, just for a moment. Stillness gripped the air around Eleanor like ice. Marcus’s head snapped up. “Evie - baby, it’s not what it looks like - ” “You will not,” said Eleanor, cutting him short, her words thin and jagged like shattered glass. Suddenly shrinking back, Sophia tugged at her dress with shaky hands, crying before she could even finish a thought. Eleanor stood frozen as the words spilled out, broken and urgent, like something too heavy to hold inside any longer “It just happened?” Eleanor’s voice rose, trembling with fury. “On the night before my wedding? While I was downstairs playing the perfect bride for our guests?” Into the room she moved, all the way. Though her hands trembled, her back did not bend. “The wedding is off.” Marcus stumbled forward, still trying to fasten his pants. “You can’t do this. Think about the guests, the money, my parents - ” That money can stick in their throat. The ring flew off her hand - three carats of ice - and smacked him before skittering away on hardwood. Silence hung until she said he could face the guests alone. Her voice stayed flat. Either way, the wedding was done Sophia sobbed. “We’ve been friends since nursing school - ” “Friends?” Eleanor laughed bitterly. “You stopped being my friend the moment you spread your legs for him.” Out she went, after a slow turn. Down the hall it went, no end in sight. With each footfall, a new stab burned inside her ribs. She arrived at the ballroom doors hollow-eyed, head tilted up like stone. Two hundred faces swiveled her way when she grasped the mic. “Friends, family,” Eleanor said, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her. “Thank you for coming tonight. Unfortunately, there will be no wedding tomorrow.” Sharp breaths shot through the people standing close. A hush followed, sudden and heavy. Breathless, Marcus slammed the side door open, his shirt only partly tucked in. Behind him came Sophia, face streaked where her makeup had melted away. What a terrible moment for them to appear. Eleanor looked straight at them. “It seems my fiancé and my maid of honor already celebrated the union. Thoroughly. On the lounge sofa.” A sudden burst of shock filled the space. Out came phones, clicking and flashing. Quiet murmurs quickly spiraled into noise. Up rose Marcus’s mother, her face dark red, trembling with anger. Out the door she went before anyone could react. Leaving the mic behind, she pulled her stunned mom into a brief embrace, then moved toward the exit of the country club, eyes forward, never turning around. The road back melted into streaks of light, each blink holding back something sharp. Once inside her apartment, energy drained like water through cracks. On the bed's edge she stayed, clothed in that soft golden dress meant for practice, not permanence. The open suitcase waited nearby, filled with plans now broken. Vanished, every effort she’d poured into her days. The weight of it settled like dust after a storm. A loud buzz broke the silence - relatives typing in panic, Marcus shouting through voice notes, strangers tapping away on screens to pass along rumors. The screen went dark when she switched it off. Later, tears came - harsh, unrelenting things that left her voice cracked and her face damp. Not quiet weeping, but deep heaves that bent her forward at the waist. The man she meant to marry gone; so too the closest companion she’d ever known. Plans built day by day now scattered like pages in a storm. Then came what hurt most. By dawn, the last strikes came hard and fast. That call came from human resources - her job gone. Thanks to Marcus’s relatives, the trustees nodded along without question. Keys clicked into new cylinders while workmen tightened bolts behind a fresh metal plate. Paperwork listed him as sole tenant, nothing about shared rent or promises made. Sun high overhead when she counted bills near a bus stop, grip tight on luggage that held everything left. A quiet afternoon, her eyes stuck to the screen. Not one opening fit what she needed. Everything had fallen apart by now. Out of nowhere, there it was - the odd ad showed up once more Looking for a sharp, low-key woman to join for twelve months. Pay is solid. She should move right away if picked. Only real interest please. For quite some time, Eleanor kept her thumb just above the reply button. Stillness held her hand there, unmoving. Nothing remained for her to give up. Her hands shook as she wrote back. Soon after, an answer came through - she’d be picked up by a dark sedan in ninety minutes, right at the street bend beside the trees. Staring at the screen, Eleanor felt her pulse hammer. No matter what came next, nothing could tear her apart like the past two days already did. Up she rose, took hold of the suitcase, then moved off in the direction of the corner. Just then, her true journey started.
