LOVE BEYOND THE REALMS
The Ghost Market smelled like electricity and old paper. I floated through the crowd. My shiny skin glowed under the dim, purple lights. All around me, other ghosts moved like hunters. They looked for the way to the human world. They wanted to taste warm blood, to feel a beating heart. But I just felt an empty ache inside. I stopped by a clear wall. I looked through it at a human girl walking on a stone street. I watched her legs, how her muscles moved and pushed her feet firmly on the ground. She didn't float or flicker. She was solid, real. It made my own light, floating life feel wrong. "Val, stop looking at the wall," Elara whispered, pulling my arm. Her voice sounded like dry leaves scraping on the ground. "Look at how they walk, Elara. They don't float. They push down on the earth. They feel the rough ground under their feet." Elara rolled her eyes. She pulled me to a shop selling glowing dark berries. "Forget the humans. We need to shop. And guess what? The Prince is here." Those words made a sudden buzz in the market. Everyone got excited. Ghost women started to fix their light dresses and put shiny powder on their pale faces. They rushed forward, hoping the Prince would notice them. "The Prince! Prince Kaelen is in the square!" a shopkeeper yelled. I stayed back, leaning against a pillar of frozen smoke. I didn't care about kings or princes, or the cold rules of the dead. I just wanted a beating heart. The crowd moved apart. Kaelen walked through the mess easily. He wore armor made of black metal. His eyes were like two burning purple fires. He didn't look at the other ladies. His eyes cut through the crowd until they stopped on me. A strong pull suddenly brought him to me. He stopped very close. The smell of cold winter air was around his cloak. "Your eyes show a hunger that is not for blood," he said softly. His voice made my chest shake. "Maybe I want something you cannot give," I said, stepping back. Kaelen reached out. His cold fingers touched my chin. "You have a spirit I've never seen. Tell me your name, little ghost." "My name is not for you, Your Highness." He looked a little confused. He stepped closer, making me feel trapped. "I can give you the kingdom. I can give you a throne of black stone and a crown of stars. You just have to look at me like the others do." "I want legs that can feel the warm summer sun," I said, my voice shaking. "I want a heart that beats, not one that just echoes in an empty space. Your throne is just another cage of ice." I turned my back on him. I floated away towards the market exit. Behind me, the air felt heavy. It got very cold, and the purple lights went out. His voice was not romantic anymore. It was a *ROAR* like thunder that shook the whole ghost world. I didn't look back. But I could feel his anger hitting me like a strong wind. "You dare turn your back on me?" My sister, Elara, didn't understand. "Why would you refuse him, Val? He is the Prince! Any girl here would kill to be his bride." "I don't care," I muttered, my voice tight. "I don't want a crown. I want a real life." We arrived home, exhausted. Our parents insisted we join the hunt for dinner. We spent hours in the mud, digging up an old grave to bring home a corpse. It was disgusting, cold, and cruel. I hated it. When we finally returned, the house was filled with gold and strange, shimmering gems. "What is this?" I asked, dropping my shovel. My mother smiled, her eyes cold. "The Prince visited. We accepted his marriage offer. The gifts are ours, and they cannot be returned. You are to marry him tomorrow." My heart shattered. I screamed and ran to my room, throwing myself onto my bed. I sobbed for hours, clutching Elara’s hand. I was a prisoner in my own home. "Val, listen to me," Elara whispered in the dark. "There is a secret. There is a potion in the palace vault. It can turn a ghost into a human. You must leave before you drink it." My eyes widened. "Is it true?" "Yes. We have to go." That night, everyone was asleep. We snuck into the palace, moving like shadows. My hands shook as I took the keys from the guards' belt. We found the potion—a glowing blue liquid—and ran for the exit. My heart pounded like a drum. "Go," Elara said, tears in her eyes. "I will miss you, but you must be free." "I love you, Elara," I cried. I ran until I hit the border. I gulped the liquid down. *Gulp, gulp.* Suddenly, my body screamed. It felt like fire was burning under my skin. I collapsed on the ground, twisting in pain. When I woke up, I felt heavy. I looked down. I had legs! Solid, human legs. I wiggled my toes, but I didn't know how to stand. I crawled toward the road, my new skin feeling the cold gravel. Then, a blinding light hit my eyes. *Vroom!* A monster with round, glowing eyes was rushing toward me. A car! I had never seen one. I was so scared that the world went black, and I passed out. The screech of tires filled the air. The car stopped. A boy jumped out. He was human—really human. He rushed over to me. I felt his warm, rough hands as he picked me up. I was cold, fragile, and naked on the road. "Oh my god," he gasped. "Are you okay?" He wrapped me in his heavy coat. It smelled like fabric and gasoline—a human smell. He carried me into his car, the engine humming beneath us. I couldn't move, but I knew I was safe. He was taking me to a hospital. My new life had begun.
