Oblivion, my life
Chapter 1 Sundale was a very beautiful place built in the plain of meadow lands, its beautiful buildings stopped by the coastline that was separated by a tarred road. Going to the beach was an everyday thing depending on the mood and season. Growing up in Sundale had been the greatest experience of my life, my school was eight blocks away from our home, my friends Mike and Josh lived close by. Josh's house was right next to mine, he lived with his parents and younger sister Jane who was still seven years old in her first grade, while Mike lived across the street with his parents and older step brother Kenny who was sixteen and in high school doing his 11th grade. Kenny's mom died of heart attack when Kenny was only three years old and Mike's dad married Mike's mom, I heard the story from mom chatting with dad. We were all in the same grade, 7th grade and sharing the same classes, except the martial arts that my parents insisted that I took. Our parents would always take us to school every morning but we'd use our skate boards to come back. My mother had always been hesitant about us riding on skate boards on our way back, complaining about our safety and risk of danger, completely blind to the thrill and freedom of our rides competing with one another. She'd leave work and pick me up from school and go back again earning me mockery and taunting from my peers which I couldn't even report. My dad suggested that she allowed me to use the school bus, after daily convincing from my dad she eventually agreed which earned me stolen time to ride with my friends, except for days when I had martial arts which was sometimes two or three days a week depending on the week's schedule. Before my mom lost my young sister to be, she worked in a law firm as a business partner, but I guess the loss of her baby took a toll on her because she never went back to work after that and it has been a year since then, I guess she hasn't completely recovered even though she's in a better state now. My dad had his own surgery, if what was his specialty in practice, he wasn't much of a talker, that being said, I didn't know, even though he had his own practice he worked in hospital as well from time to time. At first it wasn't easy coming home to my teary face mom and sometimes sniffles and sobbing behind his bedroom door, but after long couple of months she quieted down and slowly released knitted creases in her eyebrows and little by little the flash of her teeth started appearing and small talks formed and she appeared more in the dining room. "Eric, is that you my boy?" I heard her calling after I had just closed the door behind me coming from school. "Yes mom." I replied throwing my backpack on the floor, pushing my skateboard next to the coat hanger stand with my right foot. "Good," she said as she climbed down the stairs, "I wanted to go to the market, I'm glad you're here already. How was school today?" she asked slightly ruffling my hair. I was shocked yet her act melted my heart. That was my mom, my cheerful friend was indeed coming back from the closet. I saw that bright smile plastered on her face, along with her beautiful bright eyes shining with a spark that had faded months ago. She smelt good and looked good, her appearance laced with confidence which brought a warm feeling of contentment in my heart. "No problem mom." I said my eyes glued on the person I once knew. "Are you gonna need me to bring you anything? By the way, your lunch is in the fridge, you just need to warm it up." She picked up her car keys on the basin that was on the island, and before I could say anything, she said. "I want to be back before your father comes home from work." she looked at me expectantly waiting for my response which I completely forgot in seconds. My mind was still in awe of what my eyes were capturing and my brains trying to wrap around. "It's okay mom, you may bring me anything, like my jungle chocolate bars." I said mumbling the chocolate part as she didn't like me having too much of it. She gave me a warning look with a smile and headed to the door. I couldn't be any happier seeing my mother in her original state. I didn't realize that I had been standing in one spot stolen by the train of my happy thoughts. I heard the growling of my stomach reminding me that I needed to fill it up. I went to the fridge, I couldn't believe my eyes, my mom had prepared me my favorite meal that I hadn't eaten in ages. Hope brimmed in my heart, joy overflowed, things were beginning to change for better in my home. Dad had been by my mother's side, nursing and comforting her as if he didn't also lose a baby, while I was on my own trying to balance and carry my little falling apart world, not that I was complaining, but there were days I needed them too by my side, to help with my homeworks, to be excited about my achievements and show interest in my day to day life activities, things that they used to give me freely and effortlessly without nudging them for attention. I warmed my meal and ate so I could begin working on my schoolwork. The weather outside was not favorable, it was a bit chilly, the sky with an overcast of grey to dark grey clouds hinting of the coming rain, leaving the day with a diminished light and humid atmosphere. After approximately two hours had passed I had a car sound coming in, and I assumed it was my mother's car. I took a peek through the window to confirm my assumptions, I realized tiny drops of rain had started falling wetting the ground. I didn't see the car, but I heard my mom's voice calling for assistance with her grocery bags and I immediately headed over, to help carry grocery inside the house. Before my mom could close the garage door, my dad's car entered and heavy drops of rain began to fall mercilessly. I greeted dad and passed leaving them holding each other in a tight hug. My body felt energized, I could feel mentally fit and equipped by the sight I just passed, my painting love shone bright at the back of my mind waiting for me to take it back and lay it on my canvas or scrape my art on my drawing pad. I made my way to my bedroom hearing their voices entering the house, my mom's giggles sounding like a singing bird in the morning and my dad's chuckle humming with a bass behind. Something must've happened and something really good that I couldn't figure out with my small inexperienced brains. "Yes, I have spoken to Sarah. So tomorrow I'll go by the office and check things out and see if when can I start." I heard my mother telling my dad. Sarah was her friend and business partner and that must mean she was going back to work. "You have no idea, how much happy that makes me feel Jess. I'm truly happy that you have decided to go back." said my dad with an excited tone. "Are you trying to tell me that I was becoming a burden in my own home?" said my mom jokingly her tone laced with laughter. "No, no babe, that's not what I mean. I'm just happy that you're in a better shape and going back to work confirms that." my dad corrected playfully and I heard my mom's giggles trailing after. I decided to put on my headphones and block them out so I may focus on my drawing and later do my maths assignment. It had been long since I drew, my sketches were all over the place scattered around my room but tonight that was about to change. Drawing organizes my mind and help me focus better. I looked under my bed where I placed the trunk that contained most of my things that I kept away from people. I had been thinking of inking my family and hang the piece on the dining area and tonight I was about to begin.
