Feeling of Fear

1855 Words
The ballroom was a whirlwind of activity, a symphony of music, laughter, and swirling gowns. Vampires, elegant and refined, celebrated the coronation of their new queen and king. They danced with graceful abandon, engaged in lively conversations, and toasted the new rulers with glasses of shimmering champagne. Renley leaned close to Asterea, his voice a low rumble in her ear. "Would you care to excuse ourselves for a bit, Your Majesty? Perhaps a walk in the gardens? A bit of fresh air, and a chance for us to get to know each other a little better." Asterea’s heart fluttered at the suggestion. She longed for a moment away from the crowd, a chance to connect with Renley on a more personal level. "I would like that very much," she said, her voice soft. She turned to her grandmother, who was holding court with a group of nobles. "Grandmother, Renley and I were hoping to take a brief walk in the gardens." Lilith smiled. "Of course, my dear. But you will take one of my lady maids with you. It wouldn't do for the queen to be unchaperoned, especially before the wedding. You are a noble lady, and you must act like one." Asterea rolled her eyes, a familiar wave of exasperation washing over her. “Still living in the gilded ages,” Jupiter muttered in her mind, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Asterea chuckled softly, a small smile playing on her lips. "Very well, Grandmother," she said. She took Renley's hand, and he led her towards the terrace doors, a lady maid falling into step behind them. As they stepped out into the cool night air, the scent of blooming flowers and damp earth filled her senses. "Tell me about yourself," Asterea said, turning to Renley. "There isn't much to tell," he said with a shrug. "I have an older brother, Severus. He will be the head of our house when our father retires." He paused. "Severus is married to a vampire duchess who is related to the royal family. Her name is Ravina." Asterea's eyes widened. "Ravina is my cousin. Our mothers are sisters." Renley nodded. "Yes. And Ravina's mother, Danierra, was quite angry at the fact that she was being skipped over as next in line for queen." Asterea frowned. "What do you mean?" Renley sighed. "There was a large argument between Queen Lilith and Danierra when Lilith announced you would be taking the throne. Danierra literally threw a temper tantrum, saying that her mother didn't love her and that she would always put Seraphena first." Asterea was shocked. "What did Grandmother say?" "Lilith told Danierra that this had nothing to do with Sera. Danierra yelled back that it had everything to do with her because HER daughter is taking the throne. Lilith then reminded Danierra that the throne would always have been yours in the end, because even if Sera had become queen, she would have eventually passed it on to you." He paused, his expression serious. "Danierra promised her mother that if she passed the crown to you, that nothing good would come from it, and the kingdom would never accept a half-blood over a full-blooded vampire. Lilith then told Danierra that she better not start any trouble or she would disown her, which would make her a nobody in the eyes of the laws of the kingdom. She would be a mere peasant." He shook his head. "Danierra stormed out after that." Asterea sighed and closed her eyes, feeling conflicted. While she was never close to her cousin, she was hoping they could be. She didn't want any problems with her aunt or anyone else, for that matter. Renley saw the look on Asterea's face and pulled her close, wrapping his arms around her. "Come," he said softly, "let's dance." He took her hand, and right there in the garden, they danced to the live acoustics playing softly from inside. He twirled her around and then pulled her close. "You are so breathtakingly beautiful," he whispered, his voice full of warmth. "I can already see my future with you. I want to protect you, no matter the cost. I know I would die a happy man if it came to protecting you." He pulled her closer, his voice growing husky. "This bond is weird. My beast craves you, wants to claim every inch of your body, to possess your mind and soul. But my heart wants to give you all the time you need." He chuckled softly. "I don't know how I'm going to be able to spend a night away from you before our wedding." Asterea smiled at him, her heart softening. "I understand how you feel," she said. "Can you imagine having a second mind inside your head, yelping and whining about claiming her mate?" As Asterea and Renley danced beneath the starlit sky, a whirlwind of emotions swirled within her. Her heart beat a rapid rhythm against her ribs, a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation. Every time his chin brushed against her cheek, a wave of goosebumps rippled across her skin, a testament to the raw, undeniable connection that bound them. The soft music, carried on the gentle breeze, seemed to amplify the sensations, creating an intimate bubble around them. She felt lightheaded, almost giddy, as if she were floating on air. "Will I get to meet your family soon?" Renley asked, his voice a low murmur against her ear. "Yes, of course," Asterea replied, her voice soft. "If you'd like, you could accompany me back to the Falling Moon pack in a few weeks. It's my brother's Alpha ceremony." Renley nodded, his eyes gleaming with interest. "I would like that very much." He paused, his gaze searching hers. "And would you like to meet my family?" "I would love to," Asterea said, her heart warming at the thought. "But only if you want me to." Renley smiled, a genuine, heartfelt expression that made her breath catch in her throat. "I would love for my mother to meet you," he said. "She's the kindest soul I've ever known. She loves me fiercely, and I know she'll adore you." He paused, a hint of pride in his voice. "While my mother was a noble lady from birth, born a Countess, she doesn't care about titles and money. All she has ever wanted was for her children and husband to be genuinely happy." Asterea smiled, a sense of warmth spreading through her. It was clear that Renley held his mother in high regard, and the thought of meeting her filled Asterea with a sense of anticipation. She was eager to learn more about the man who intended to capture her heart, to understand the world he came from. Renley held Asterea close, their bodies swaying gently to the rhythm of the music. "Tell me about the Falling Moon Pack," he said, his voice soft and encouraging. "What was it like, growing up there?" Asterea closed her eyes, and a wave of nostalgia washed over her. The scent of pine and damp earth filled her senses, and she could almost hear the rustling of leaves and the distant howl of a wolf. "It was… everything," she began, her voice thick with emotion. "It was the scent of the forest after a rain, the crisp air on a winter morning, the warmth of the sun on my skin in the summer. It was the sound of the wind whispering through the trees, the rushing of the river, the laughter of my packmates." She paused, her voice trembling slightly. "It was the raw, untamed nature of it all. It was… peace. A deep, abiding peace that settled in my soul. There was a freedom there, a connection to something ancient and powerful." She opened her eyes, her gaze meeting Renley's. "I feared leaving it," she confessed, her voice barely a whisper. "I was unsure if I could ever be happy anywhere else. The Vampire Kingdom… it's so different. So… refined, so controlled." Her voice grew stronger, her emotions pouring out in a torrent. "But the Falling Moon… it's in my blood. It's a part of who I am. It's the wildness, the strength, the loyalty, the love. It's my family, my home, my heart." She looked away, her cheeks flushed. "I know it sounds… dramatic," she said, her voice laced with self-consciousness. Renley pulled her closer, his embrace gentle yet firm. "It doesn't sound dramatic at all," he said, his voice warm and reassuring. "It sounds like you're describing home, the place you love most in the world. And that's beautiful, Asterea." In the midst of their dance, Asterea suddenly went pale, her body doubling over in a sharp spasm of pain. A wave of panic washed over her, and she could feel the fear of her people echoing through the bond that connected them. Renley, his face etched with concern, helped her to the edge of the fountain, his hands steadying her. "Asterea, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice laced with worry. Her heart pounded against her ribs, a frantic rhythm that mirrored the turmoil within her. She felt a wave of nausea, her stomach churning. "Something's wrong," she managed to say, her voice trembling. "I don't know what, but something's very wrong." The wave of fear from her people intensified, their emotions a cacophony of dread and confusion. Asterea's brow furrowed as she tried to understand what was happening. “Jupiter?” she thought, her voice laced with desperation. “Do you know what’s happening?” Jupiter’s response was a wave of anxiety, her thoughts as frantic as Asterea’s. “I don’t know,” Jupiter replied, her voice echoing in her mind. “But we need to get back inside. Now.” Renley helped Asterea to her feet, and they hurried back towards the ballroom. As they approached the entrance, they found a scene of chaos. People were rushing out the door, their faces etched with fear, while others were gathered in a tight circle, their voices a low murmur of panic. As Asterea and Renley tried to push their way through the crowd, someone bumped into Asterea, sending her stumbling. Renley’s strong arms caught her, pulling her close. She was trembling, her body wracked with fear. Something was terribly wrong. When they finally reached the center of the crowd, they saw her grandparents standing over an older gentleman who lay on the floor. His skin was cracked and pale, like shattered porcelain, and black veins pulsed beneath the surface. "Grandmother, what happened?" Asterea asked, her voice trembling. Lilith’s face was grim. "Guards, take the queen to her room," she commanded, her voice sharp. "No!" Asterea protested, but her grandmother ignored her. A guard stepped forward, reaching for her arm. Renley intervened, his voice a low growl. "Get your hands off my betrothed," he warned, his eyes flashing with anger. Asterea was on the verge of a panic attack. She looked at Renley, her eyes wide with fear. "He's… he's dead," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. "I could feel his pain… I could feel him… losing him."
