Episode Two: The Alpha’s Shadow

--- Elara couldn’t focus. No matter how hard she tried, her eyes kept drifting to the back of the classroom—back to Kael Blackwood. He sat like a king forced into a student’s desk, long legs stretched out, broad shoulders barely contained by his jacket. He hadn’t spoken once since introducing himself, but his presence was loud, commanding attention without effort. And he was watching her. Not openly. Not constantly. But every time Elara lifted her gaze, she caught him already looking—his golden eyes dark, intense, almost… worried. Her skin tingled under his attention. This was impossible. Yet the memory of the forest refused to fade. The strength of his arms. The warmth of his chest. The way the air had seemed to bend around him like he belonged to the night. You imagined it, she told herself for the hundredth time. The final bell rang, snapping her out of her thoughts. Students flooded the hallways, laughter and chatter echoing around her. Elara gathered her books quickly, eager to escape the suffocating tension pressing against her chest. She didn’t make it three steps outside the classroom before a voice stopped her. “Elara.” Her name—spoken low, rough, and unmistakably his—sent a shiver racing down her spine. She turned slowly. Kael stood a few feet away, hands clenched at his sides as though holding himself back. Up close, he was even more unsettling. Too perfect. Too real. His eyes flicked over her face, checking her—like he was making sure she was unharmed. “You know my name?” she asked, forcing steadiness into her voice. His jaw tightened. “I know more than I should.” That should have scared her. Instead, her heart raced. “I need to talk to you,” he continued. “Alone.” A thousand warnings screamed in her head. Every rational instinct told her to walk away. But something deeper—older—pulled her toward him. “Fine,” she said. “But this isn’t a forest, and I’m not helpless.” Something dark and unreadable flickered across his face. “I know.” They stepped outside into the quiet courtyard behind the school. The air felt charged, thick with unsaid words. Kael stopped abruptly, turning to face her. “You shouldn’t have been in those woods,” he said. Elara’s breath hitched. “So it wasn’t a dream.” Silence stretched between them. Kael’s shoulders sagged, as though the fight had drained out of him. “No.” Her pulse thundered in her ears. “You saved me.” “Yes.” “And the bear?” “Wasn’t the real danger.” Her stomach twisted. “Then what were you?” His eyes glowed faintly, catching the sunlight in a way no human’s ever could. “I’m the reason you’re not dead.” Fear finally surged—sharp and cold. “What are you?” Kael took a step back, giving her space. “Someone who shouldn’t want you anywhere near him.” That answer only deepened the ache in her chest. “Kael—” A sudden c***k echoed through the courtyard. Kael spun instantly, body shifting into a protective stance. He grabbed Elara, pulling her behind him just as something dark moved across the rooftops. “Get inside,” he ordered, voice no longer human—deep, commanding, dangerous. “What’s happening?” she demanded, panic flooding her veins. “They’ve found you,” he growled. They. Before she could ask, a low, chilling howl rolled through the air, freezing her blood. Kael cursed under his breath. “Go. Now,” he said, shoving her toward the building. “And don’t look back.” She ran. But even as she did, she felt it—that invisible thread tethering her to him, vibrating with fear and urgency. --- That night, Elara couldn’t sleep. Every shadow outside her window felt alive. The forest loomed in her thoughts like a warning she didn’t understand. She hugged her knees to her chest, replaying Kael’s words over and over. They’ve found you. A soft knock sounded at her window. Elara’s heart nearly stopped. She crept closer, pulling back the curtain just enough to see him standing below—Kael, illuminated by moonlight, eyes glowing brighter than ever. She opened the window. “You shouldn’t be here,” she whispered. “I know,” he replied. “But I won’t leave you unguarded.” “You said you shouldn’t want me near you.” “And yet here I am.” His gaze softened, and for a moment, the fear dissolved into something dangerously intimate. “What are you, Kael?” she asked again, quietly this time. He hesitated—then stepped fully into the moonlight. “My kind lives in the shadows,” he said. “We are bound to the moon. To instinct. To blood.” Her breath trembled. “Werewolves.” “Yes.” The word should have sounded ridiculous. Instead, it felt like truth. “I’m human,” she said. “You said that like it mattered.” “It matters more than you know,” he replied. “Because humans don’t survive our world. And because…” His voice lowered. “You’re tied to me.” Her chest tightened. “How?” “I don’t know yet,” he admitted. “But I feel it. My wolf feels it. You’re a beacon—and others will come.” As if summoned by his words, another howl echoed—closer this time. Kael’s head snapped toward the forest. “Get back,” he said sharply. The ground seemed to tremble as glowing eyes emerged from the darkness beyond her backyard fence—red, hostile, and hungry. Kael’s body began to change, muscles rippling, bones shifting. Elara stumbled back, terror and awe crashing through her as fur erupted along his arms and his eyes burned molten gold. “Stay inside,” he growled, voice splitting between man and beast. “No matter what you hear.” “Kael!” she cried. He turned once more, meeting her gaze. “I will always find you,” he promised. Then he leapt into the darkness—straight toward the glowing eyes. Elara watched from the window, heart pounding, as a monstrous roar shattered the night. And she realized the terrifying truth: The Alpha King wasn’t just protecting her. He was going to war for her. ---
