Episode One: The Night the Forest Breathed
--- The forest had always felt like a place from stories—quiet, ancient, alive in a way cities never were. That was why Elara Quinn chose it. She told herself she wasn’t reckless. Just… tired. Tired of noise, of people, of grief that clung to her like a shadow. Camping alone was her way of breathing again. One night. Just her, a small tent, a crackling fire, and the illusion of peace. She had no idea the forest was watching her back. The moon hung low and swollen in the sky when Elara finished setting up her camp. The fire warmed her hands as she sat cross-legged, pulling her jacket tighter. The woods were unusually quiet—no crickets, no owls. Just the soft whisper of wind through towering pines. Her instincts prickled. “Get it together,” she muttered, forcing a nervous laugh. Then she heard it. A heavy snap of branches. Elara froze. Another step followed. Slow. Deliberate. Her heart slammed against her ribs as she stood, shining her flashlight between the trees. The beam shook as it cut through the darkness, revealing nothing but shadows—until something moved. Too big. Too fast. A massive shape lunged from the underbrush. Elara screamed. The bear rose onto its hind legs, towering over her, its roar tearing through the night like thunder. She stumbled backward, tripping over a rock, her flashlight flying from her grip. Panic swallowed her whole. There was nowhere to run. She squeezed her eyes shut. This was how it ended. A blur of motion exploded between her and the beast. A deep, feral snarl split the air. Elara opened her eyes just in time to see something impossible. A creature—no, a man—moved with inhuman speed, slamming into the bear. They crashed through trees, claws and teeth flashing in the moonlight. The stranger was massive, powerful, glowing faintly silver beneath the moon. His eyes burned gold, wild and furious. The bear didn’t stand a chance. With a final roar, the beast fled into the darkness, wounded and terrified. Elara tried to scream again, but her voice failed her. The stranger turned. Their eyes met. He was beautiful in a dangerous way—dark hair, sharp features, skin dusted with dirt and blood that wasn’t his. His chest rose and fell heavily as he stared at her like she was something fragile… something precious. “Human,” he breathed, voice rough and low. Her knees buckled. The last thing Elara saw before darkness claimed her was his arms reaching out—careful, reverent—catching her before she hit the ground. --- She woke up gasping. Elara shot upright in bed, drenched in sweat, her heart racing. Morning light streamed through her bedroom window. Birds chirped cheerfully outside. Her room. Safe. Normal. She pressed a trembling hand to her chest. “A dream,” she whispered. It had to be. She laughed shakily, running her fingers through her hair. Camping alone, watching too many fantasy movies—that was all it was. Bears, glowing-eyed men, monsters in the woods? Impossible. Still… her body remembered. The fear. The strength of those arms. The way his gaze had softened when he looked at her. She shook her head hard and forced herself out of bed. By the time she arrived at school, she had convinced herself completely. Until she walked into her first class. The room buzzed with whispers—girls craning their necks, boys sitting straighter in their seats. Elara barely noticed until her friend Maya grabbed her arm. “Ella,” Maya hissed. “Do you see him?” “See who—” Elara looked up. And the world stopped. He stood at the front of the classroom beside the teacher, taller than everyone else, broad-shouldered, impossibly commanding. Dark hair fell messily over his forehead. His eyes—those same impossible golden eyes—locked onto hers. Recognition flared instantly. Her breath caught painfully in her throat. No. This wasn’t possible. “This is our new transfer student,” the teacher said. “Please welcome Kael Blackwood.” The name echoed in Elara’s head like a warning bell. Kael’s gaze never left her. Not when he took the empty seat near the back. Not when the class resumed. Not when her pulse roared in her ears so loudly she couldn’t hear a word the teacher said. This wasn’t a dream. She knew it in her bones. Every time their eyes met, something pulled—a strange heat blooming in her chest, a connection she didn’t understand and couldn’t escape. Fear tangled with fascination, and something dangerously close to desire. At lunch, Maya leaned close, grinning. “He’s staring at you like you’re his soulmate.” Elara swallowed hard. “You don’t know that.” But Kael did. Across the cafeteria, his jaw tightened as he watched her laugh nervously with her friends. His wolf paced violently beneath his skin, snarling in warning. Mine, the instinct growled. He hated himself for it. She was human. Fragile. Untouched by the world of blood and moons and violence he ruled. He had sworn never to drag a human into his darkness. Yet fate had placed her directly in his path. Again. That night in the forest had changed everything. Kael had felt it the moment he caught her falling body—the ancient bond snapping into place, sealing his destiny. A human mate. The one thing forbidden to an Alpha King. And now enemies would sense her. He could already feel them stirring. Kael clenched his fists beneath the table, eyes darkening as a low growl vibrated in his chest. I will protect her, he vowed silently. Even if it costs me my crown. Even if it costs me my life. Elara felt a shiver run down her spine as his gaze burned into her. She didn’t know why—but she knew one thing with terrifying certainty. Her life had just split into before and after the night the forest breathed. And nothing would ever be normal again. ---
