CHAPTER 1: There’s nothing left
it was our 6th wedding anniversary. I sat quietly in the bedroom, dressed in a soft, white lingerie, Alex had given to me the day he returned from his business trip. He had smiled and said, "I saw this and thought of you."
The fabric fell smoothly on my skin, and my heart was full of hope. I lit a few candles, and the room smelled sweet, just the way my husband liked it. I looked at the clock. He would be home soon. I ran my fingers through my long blonde hair and took a deep breath. The maids had spent hours getting me ready.
Tonight was special. Not just because of the anniversary, but because I hoped for something more. And that's having a child. My dream of holding my baby in my arms has been a constant terror twisting in my heart. But Alex had grown distant. He barely touched me anymore. We rarely shared quite moments, and intimacy had become rare.
Still, i believed love could bring us back together. Maybe tonight he would see how much i care. Maybe tonight, he would hold me like he used to. I placed my hands on my stomach, imagining a little life growing inside me.
Bringing him joy and nurturing our relationship has always meant a lot to me. I wanted to show him how deeply I love him and how grateful I am that he chose me as his wife.:
We tied the knot right after finishing college and had been married for six years. My husband, Alex Marion, a billionaire, was often aloof and emotionally distant. Still, I put in constant effort to win his heart, believing I was slowly making progress. That belief shattered on the day everything changed
As I heard his car pull into the driveway, a warm smile crept on my lips, and my heart whispered, "Maybe this is the night everything changes." Alex walked through the door and headed straight for the bedroom, He carried an air of authority, tall, handsome with perfectly sculptured features. His sumptuous CEO suit brought out the colour of his sharp blue eyes, and his curly brown hair was impeccably styled. I had fallen for him the moment we met
Seeing him at the doorway, I lit up with a smile, relieved and happy to have him home. “Oh, you’re back early,” I said, moving toward him to greet him with a hug and kiss. But this time, he gently pushed me away, refusing my affection. a gesture that left me puzzled and hurt.
“We need to talk. Could you please cover up a little?” he said, pointing his fingers at my upper body, which was almost popping out from the lingerie. He took a few steps and sat on the couch, bringing out his briefcase to settle on the middle table. He opened it and brought out a rectangular envelope. His clenched jaw signalled something serious.
“Is something wrong?” I asked nervously. He sighed and gave a silent nod.
I adjusted my long, wavy blonde hair to cover my upper body. My almond shaped eyes mirrored its colour. Though usually calm, anxiety now crept across my face, Alex had never been so cold towards me even though he was not as loving as he used to
"Sit down," he said, pointing to one of the empty chairs in front of him. I gave a small, confused smile as I sat. Alex had never been the most affectionate husband, but he had never spoken to me so coldly before.
“What’s going on, Alex? Is this about the business?” I asked, settling into the bed..
He had been away on a business trip a month ago. Since he came back, he’d been distant, barely home. Hoping to reconnect, I had always accepted his busy schedule because of his high profile job.
“This isn’t about work. It’s about us,” he said, handing me the rectangular envelope he’d been holding.
I took it and opened it slowly, finding several printed pages inside. I had no idea what to expect. But as I read the first page, my heart dropped Divorce Agreement!. Shocked, I flipped through the papers.
“What is this?” I asked, stunned.
“If you check the last page, you’ll see I’ve already signed it,” he said, calmly passing me a pen. “I just need your signature.”
“Why, Alex? Why a divorce?” My voice shook, full of confusion and fear.
He sighed. “Sometimes, couples reach a point where it’s best to part ways peacefully. You’ll keep your rights, and you can move on with your life. Let’s just end this without a fight.”
“No, Alex. I’m not signing anything,” I said firmly, my voice trembling with shock and disbelief. I shook my head slowly, trying to process what was happening. “Seriously, what’s going on here? After everything we’ve endured together—all the years, all the memories—you just show up out of nowhere and demand a divorce like it’s nothing? You can’t just spring something like this on me and expect me to go along with it. This isn’t a joke; this is our life. Our relationship. Doesn’t that mean anything to you?”
Alex looked at me with an expression I didn’t recognize—one filled with coldness and detachment. His voice was sharp, unfeeling. “What relationship, Sheila? There’s nothing left. I want a divorce, and that’s final.”
His words cut through me like a blade. This wasn’t the man I had loved for so long, the man who had once held me close and promised to stand by me. Now, he stood before me like a stranger, his eyes devoid of emotion, his tone laced with bitterness. It was as if he had already erased everything we’d shared.
Trying to hold back the tears, I searched his face for a sign of compassion, of the old Alex. “Can you at least tell me why?” I asked softly. “Why are you doing this? Why now?” My voice cracked as tears welled up in my eyes. None of it made sense. I never imagined he would turn his back on me like this, not after everything we had promised each other.
Suddenly, he slammed his hand on the table, the sound echoing through the room like a gunshot. He rose abruptly, his face contorted in anger. “Just sign the damn papers!” he yelled, his voice shaking with frustration.
I broke down, crying openly now. I couldn’t understand how he could be so cruel, so unfeeling. This man, who once swore to love and protect me, was now shouting at me like I was nothing. He was treating me like I was a burden, like the vows we made at the altar had meant nothing to him.
“I said stop pushing me!” he snapped. “Can’t you see I’m done? I don’t care anymore!” His words stung like poison. He acted as though I wasn’t even the same woman he had once claimed would be the center of his world. How could someone who once promised to make me the happiest woman alive now be so eager to throw me away?
My heartbreak quickly turned to fury. I snatched the divorce papers from the table, my hands trembling with rage, and trash it on the burning candles. I was so eager to destroy the thing that symbolized the end of my marriage, the thing that was tearing my world apart.
“What the hell do you think you are doing, you b***h?” he shouted, rushing toward me, but by this time the papers had already burnt beyond repair.
“I told you, Alex Marion, I’m not signing those divorce papers!” I shouted back defiantly, my voice shaking but full of determination.
He swore under his breath, running a hand through his short hair in frustration. Then he looked at me with a twisted sense of satisfaction.
“You can tear up those papers all you want, Sheila,” he said coldly. “I’ve got copies. And I’ll keep giving them to you until you sign. I’m not stopping until you set me free from this bondage you called marriage. No matter what
