CHAPTER FOUR

2014 Words
“Did something happen here? I saw Mr. Trevor’s eyes filled with fear when he told you to close the doors and even set an alarm,” Emma asked Meaghan with a thoughtful look in her eyes. “Well, someone incinerated the café,” she began, “if I remember correctly it was six months from now. Fortunately, the fire department came soon before all the café caught fire, so only a few things got burned,” Meaghan gasped. “And what caused the fire,” Emma asked in a faint whisper. “Well, I’m not certain, but Mr. Trevor believed that one of his competitors ignited the café. ” “And the guard was he not around?” Emma asked. “He was but as you can see,” she pointed at Mr. Jamison who was sitting at a rather dashing harm chair, “the man is in his fifty’s we believed he was sound asleep. And only woke up after the fire department came. ” “But if he was asleep who called the fire department?” “One of our customers was passing by the café and saw that it was on fire. So, he called the fire department and Mr. Trevor. Now let’s continue with work you can ask me questions letter,” Meaghan grunted. * After minutes of silence Sebastian asked with a meaningful expression on his face, “do you think if I ask Emma on a rendezvous she won’t refuse me?” and he swung to face Trevor’s direction. “How am I supposed to know that,” he answered politely and proceeded, “besides, the woman doesn’t look like a debutante, I presume she even has a boyfriend,” a smile crept on his face as he spun to face Sebastian. “But I can give it a short right man?” he inquired in a wary tone “You can,” he mumbled. “You seem so interested in Emma, but you are a playboy I don’t think she would want such a husband,” and he took a quaff from his fruity drink which he bought at a side road shop. “She doesn’t know that, and I don’t want her to know,” he flashed Trevor a courteous expression. And then he added, “there is something about her that makes her different from every chick I have ever dated. ” “maybe you are failing in love with her?” Trevor said in a syrupy tone. After a few minuscules of silence, Sebastian whispered faintly, “Maybe, or maybe I’m not. I just don’t know, man. She is just unique in a sense that I can’t describe. ” And he flicked a steely glare at Trevor. “I knew that was the reason you backed her up, I knew it, I knew it, I knew it,” and he chuckled faintly. “With that nonsense again, Trevor, come on, dude. ” “Any way, she looks like a wonderful woman, so don’t break her heart if you even have a chance of dating her,” Trevor said, grinning excitedly. “I will get a chance. No girl has ever said no to me. ” “Well, we don’t know about this one, she might end up rejecting your ass. It’s like you mentioned she is unusual,” he teased and continued, “Now quit talking, I’m trying to concentrate on the road. I don’t have insurance if I get into an accident,” he scolded. “Ha ha, so funny right? And do I have to point out that I get everything I prefer? For the record, you just aren’t a skillful driver, don’t condemn me. Moreover, play some music, so I don’t have to listen to your heavy breathing,” Sebastian laughed. “And start pedestrian, you are looking like Mr. Jamison,” Trevor said. “Please, you are the one who needs to lose more weight than me,” and he leaned on the car seat and closed his eyes. But after ten minutes, Sebastian’s phone rung. He took the phone from his pocket, stared at the screen, saw who was calling. He groaned and threw it on the dashboard. Without glancing at Sebastian, Trevor asked in a brittle voice, “er…. Who called that you instantly become pissed off?” He hesitated and eventually spoke, “it’s Natasha she has been troubling me all day as if she has nothing to do man. ” “I’m not the kind of person who says a told you so, but I did. And if you don’t want her, just end it. ” He pressed on without waiting for a reply, “before you here it from someone else, I saw Natasha kissing another dude in a certain bar. ” He paused, allowing Sebastian to comprehend what he had just told him. After a few minutes of silence, Sebastian said darkly, “I’m going to kill that woman and the dude she was kissing, and you,” he swung to face at Trevor and added, “why didn’t you inform me about this? She has been bothering me like a damn fly. ” “Don’t blame it on me. In fact, you are the one to blame I advised you to drop your childish behavior, but you continued banging every girl you saw. This is the price you have to pay,” he scolded. Silence block in. * “One more question and I will stop. How did Mr. Trevor handle the news?” Emma asked. “Well,” she hesitated for a second and added, “since they didn’t incinerate everything that somewhat relaxed him a little,” Meaghan said. “And was he not mad at Mr. Jamison for sleeping during working hours?” asked Emma. “He was, but Mr. Trevor is a good man, so he let that pass, but told him never to sleep during working hours again. Is that one question?” she smiled at Emma. They carried on talking and didn’t realize that it was getting darker by each second. People were getting killed virtually every night, so they encouraged everyone to be in their homes by the time Meaghan and her colleagues were working. “Alright everyone, the sky outside is already inky black, it’s prime time for us to go home. We will complete the remaining work tomorrow,” Meaghan said to her colleagues. “Alright,” they said, and the boys went to the boys’ rooms and the girls to the girls’ rooms to remove their uniforms. After a few minutes, they came out of the rooms and left the café. Meaghan locked and set the alarm as she was told by Trevor. “See you tomorrow, Mr. Jamison,” Emma said. “See you and be vigilant, they are killers on the loose!” Mr. Jamison shouted. Emma was the only one who went South, others went north and others east. It was gloomy, and only a few people were on the road, not even cars. She only saw one on that road. At the time that Emma took a corner, she saw four men drinking and smoking. Her fight-or-flight hormone caused goosebumps on her skin with the thought they might be the killers. Her walk even changed, she started shivering since she went closer and closer toward the four men. “Where are you going, pretty?” One man with long shaggy hair asked as Emma went past them. His face was scaly that it can even make a ghost run. Emma neither replied nor looked in their direction. “Didn’t you hear what he just asked you?” another guy spoke with a tinny voice since he was closer to her, she could even smell his nasty breath. “I’m going home,” she responded in a whisper. Fear swelled inside her like a venomous bubble, squeezing her lungs. “And why is such a lovely lady walking alone? It will delight me to take you home with my car,” the first man said and wet his lips with his tongue. “No!” She raised her voice, then realized that she was at the center of four intoxicated men. She sank her voice and said, “thank you, but I will manage,” and started walking fast. The first man followed her behind, she knew she had to do something fast. Just before he could touch her, she kicked him on his genitals and started running. Since he was already drunk, he failed to the ground. The rest of the men tried to help their friend up, but he roared, “catch that girl!” The remaining three ran after her, but she was now far away from them. It was a death situation, she ran like a horse. She went into the bushes to hide, and luckily the three men run past her. She was breathing heavily, since she had never run that fast in years. She looked right to left multiple times and saw that the three men were out of site. Then she got out of the bushes and run straight home, not far from where she was hiding. Opened the door and entered the house, thankfully it was still open it was closed but not with keys, of course. She was painting and sweat was dripping from her forehead. “What is the matter, Emma?” A woman asked with a startled tone. “You won’t believe what had just happened to me, mother,” she said as she sat down. Emma’s mother was forty years with a pretty face just like her daughter. She wore a brightly colored chitenge dress that made her eyes pop. And accessorized with a larger sunflower in her hair. “Tell me you are making me frightened,” she said, eyes glistening with fear. “I got chased by four men on my way here. ” She described all the incident to her mother and finally said the last part with a gasp, “But by the grace of God they didn’t see me when I hid in the bushes. And that is how I escaped. ” “But are you OK they did nothing to you did they?” she perused her daughter’s body and hugged her tightly, tears streaming down her pale face. “I want to avoid losing you like your father,” she seemed to cry even more. “No, mother, I’m ok. They didn’t harm me,” Her voice sounded tinny since she was close to her. “Thanks be to God for that. Never come late again, young lady,” She scolded her in a motherly approach. “Yes, mother, I promise I won’t come late again,” she sighed. “How did your interview go, did you get the job?” she asked while wiping her tears. “Yes, mother, I did, but not literally because they have put me under observation to see how I do. ” “That’s wonderful, I know you are going to get the job because my daughter is a hard-working lady,” she said, her smile stretching wider. “Aww thanks, mom. I’m going to make you proud. And is there any food I’m starving with all that running damn, those bastards drained the little energy I had in me,” and she got up from the chair. “Emma language,” her mother said. “Sorry mother,” and she went to the kitchen. After a couple of minutes, she came back with a plate of rice, mince balls and a cup of juice. “You could have taught those boys a lesson or two,” Irene said as Emma sat down. “Mother, you seem to forget that incarnates shouldn’t know about us. That is why we moved here after our secret was out and father died,” tears filled in her eyes, but she brushed it away and continued eating. Irene went and patted her daughter on her back.
