“I’m sorry about that,” the man said, examining Will’s legs. He had rolled up Will’s trousers to reveal a scattering of tiny wounds across his left lower leg. None of them looked too bad, but Will looked white and in some pain. “I wanted to get closer to that thing before I fired, but it was almost on top of you, I didn’t have time. You just caught the edge of the shotgun spray, things are full of pellets and you have to get up close if you want to inflict some serious hurt. You’ll be all right, I was too far away to do any damage. I’ve got some antiseptic cream in the jeep.”
“Thanks,” Daniel said. “If you hadn’t come along…”
“Try not to think about that,” he said. “You three look in pretty bad shape. I’m parked up on the bridge, think you can make it up there?”
