Intrigued

"Do you know what that means?" Evan asked. "I surely don't," Gwen replied. "It means whenever two people are about to say the same thing. That means they have great minds and think alike." "No, you are pulling my leg. Two people can only start to think alike after being with one another for some time. How long have we known each other? What, about two hours." she said, snickering. "It's true! It's scientifically proven. It's something that happens automatically. I promise," he said, bright-eyed and sincere, and Gwen could see that even in the dimly lit room. "Okay, if you say so," she said, smiling. "So, I'll answer first. If things go well with the job, I might consider it. What about you? Do you and your husband plan on staying here?" Evan asked, searching for more information. "No," Gwen replied. "No, to which part of my question?" Evan asked, displaying his boldness. She wouldn't stop smiling, Gwen thought, 'Wow! He's...I can't put my finger on it yet.' "Uhm...Yes, I plan on staying for a while, but not permanent, and no, I don't have a husband." She paused and looked at him; he gave her the most relieved expression, knowing things had ended between her and that husband of hers, which prompted her to ask him a pointed question. "Are you married?" "I... I was some time ago." He hesitated. "My wife passed away here recently this year." "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," Gwen said with a sympathetic expression. "Thanks, it's been hard. But in this last year, I've been doing a lot better. What about yourself, since you don't have a husband? Are you dating someone?" "I normally don't discuss my personal affairs with a stranger." Gwen froze up, thinking about the man she was once married to. The mere thought of her ever thinking about how she had married a man who divorced her so cruelly made her heart tense up with pain. "I apologize. I don't mean to be rude. I just thought." Evan said, looking at her tense face. "No, it's okay. The conversation has been quite interesting, and you're an open person. So, I think it's only fair to answer your question. Maybe one day, but I don't know if I believe in love and marriage." That was the last thing he expected her to say. It caught him off guard. "Really?" She nodded. "I'd never met anyone I'd wanted to spend forever with; if I ever met someone who could convince me, it might change my mind. But relationships for me have been difficult, at least the one serious one I had, and after that one. I never thought about it in that way. Besides, statistically, over half of the men today have affairs while married. So why should I bother." He chuckled. "That may be true statistically, but speaking for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed my six years of marriage, and by the way, I was faithful the whole time. Even while we dated, you can't just go by statistics. "I don't know if the statistics I read included men like you." He chuckled again. "Men like me. Last time I checked, I'm just like any other man." She laughed. "No, I mean the statistics that were in a magazine called. "Everlasting love." "I'm clueless about that particular magazine since I'm not much of a pop culture reader." "Anyway, you are to be commended." "Thank you, but I think matters like that are very individual. Marriage doesn't and shouldn't be loveless and sad. You just need to connect with the other person, which makes any relationship enjoyable, and the two continue to seek exciting ways to build from there." Gwen crossed her legs," She had never met a man she felt she could respect and feel safe with. But this man had made her feel comfortable in her skin quickly. It was impressive because this was her first real conversation with a foreign man outside of handling business. Little did Gwen realize that her thighs were exposed as she sat there engrossed in meaningful conversation. Evan caught sight of it as he paid attention to everything about her. Her legs were beautiful and elegant. He tried not to stare. She tucked her hair behind her ear innocently, revealing her lovely neck. She had flawless skin; not a single blemish touched it. He had to admit he wanted to touch her; he wanted to taste her and hold her in his arms. Evan wondered if she felt the attraction and connection, too. Or was it just him? Her statement brought him back to earth. "Well, I have to agree with that. You're probably right about having a connection with an individual. I'm still working on faith. I don't have much confidence in people." "You mean men. Right?" "Okay, mainly men. I don't think I'll find anyone who truly knows how to care for the person underneath. So, I don't bother. I enjoy my life the way it is." Her eyes had a sadness hidden behind them; even though she spoke of enjoying life, something didn't fit her words. "Why do you think that, Gwen? I haven't known you for very long, but you seem to be a beautiful person on the inside and full of life." "Thanks. I don't mean to bore you with my views. I'm not seeking compliments." "I'm not bored and don't freely give compliments. It's been a while since I've had a mature conversation with another adult." "You do mean female adult." Evan chuckled. "Yes, exactly." Gwen had to remember Evan uses fewer words in sentences." She looked at him smiling, her eyes bright. Her words moved him in ways he could never articulate. He could talk to her forever and never grow tired of it. She was analytical and observant. Not to mention intelligent. Gwen knew she was feeling something from this stranger. Suddenly, she felt this air or wind shifting in her heart, turning her emotions outside in. It was a feeling she never felt before; it wasn't just physical attraction either. With her own two eyes, she'd recognized he was attractive, but that didn't matter to her now. Could it be that connection he spoke of earlier? Since this had never happened to her, she quickly changed the subject, hoping to shift her heart back to reality. "I hope everything turns out great for you here in New York," Gwen said, smiling. "Thank you. You seem like a person who likes traveling and discovering new things." "Now, that is true; I do. I've been to almost all the southern states, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Canada, and one day soon, I would like to visit Europe, especially Paris, or maybe even one of the Asian countries." "Why not start with South Korea?!" he asked excitedly. "I'm part Korean and European." "I never thought about starting there. But I'll remember that now that I've met you." "Maybe you need to start small. Have you eaten Korean food before?" Evan had a wealth of questions, and so did Gwen. They laughed and made small talk from that point on as they consumed that thermal container of coffee together. It was a pleasant time together. Before they knew it, they had been sitting there talking for almost two hours. That's when the battery-operated pocket flashlight she had kept in her purse finally died. "I guess that's it for me; I can't provide any more light. Well, Evan. It's been nice meeting and talking to you." Gwen said, smiling, feeling her emotions swirling inside her. He seemed very, very nice. She was trying to convince herself that meeting a new person was pleasant. "Oh, I guess it is time for us to go to bed. I have one bar left." Evan said, looking down at his cell phone. She smiled again as if she had no control over her jaw muscles. He was friendly with a mild sense of humor. Gwen stood up and headed over to the bed. Evan watched her walk away. She was beautiful, from her smile to her conversation. He enjoyed everything about her personality, not to mention her looks. Evan was utterly charmed. Gwen was thinking about him the hold time:' Now that I've talked to him, he doesn't seem like a creep. Evan is a very nice, respectable guy.' Gwen began to feel guilty about taking the king-size bed for herself. Should I share this massive bed with him since he had paid the bulk of the room?
