The Knock At The Door

1436 Words
Gwen wasn't sure she heard who was at her door. So, she took a chance and opened it. No! It was Amanda Towers! The gril had the nerve to barge in right past Gwen. "I'm here to do a walk-through before I start shopping for things to redecorate this house to my taste." "Excuse me! Don't you move another step! What do you think you are doing coming here? This is still my house! So, it's best for you to get out of here now!" "I have every right to be here! Brock told me it was fine to come over and look around." "Not why I'm still living and breathing! So, you get out of here!" "No! I'm going to be the new woman of this house!" Before Gwen knew it, she yanked Amanda by the arm. She jerked from Gwen. "If you put your hands on me again, I promise you will be behind bars! Don't ever touch me! Wait until I tell Brock you put your hands on me!" "Don't worry! I'll tell him myself!" Gwen dials Brock's number. "Hello, Brock!" Amanda snatches her phone! "Brock, this is Amanda." She immediately began fake crying. "I tried to come over to look at the house, and Gwenette hit me!" Gwen snatched her phone back from Amanda. "Brock! You better put this woman in her place! This is our house; she can't just barge in here!" "Gwen, are you still in my house? Because it's not our house! But it's my house!" "Brock, I'm still your wife!" "My name is on the deed! Now I want you out of my house by tomorrow! Put Amanda on the phone!" "No! She can't come in here and disrespect me this way! Brock, you have no reason to treat me this way!" "Hello! Hello! Brock, don't you hang up! Be a man and tell her to leave!" The phone clicked. He hung up on Gwen. Amanda's cell phone rang, and she answered it. "Baby, I know you are ready to get things prepared for us," Brock tells her. "Yes, but she won't let me. Brock, she put her hands on me." "Get out of my house! I'm calling the cops! Get out! Before I hurt you for real!" Brock hears Gwen screaming at the top of her lungs in the background. "Amanda, just leave and come back another time. She'll be gone soon, baby. Okay?" "Okay, Brock, I'm only leaving because I love you so much and because you say so." Amanda hung up the phone, telling Gwen. "I'm only leaving because Brock told me to. You better be gone the next time I come!" "Get out!" Gwen slammed the door behind her. Feeling humiliated, Gwen wanted to cry. It hurt her to hear him take another woman's side over hers. 'He's so cruel!" At that moment, she knew Brock didn't care about her! Gwen never thought of ever truly hurting her husband or getting even with him. 'But after the way he just humiliated her in front of Amanda Towers, she wouldn't and couldn't just let it go! For sure, she can't let them get away with this! Reality came crashing in on her! It was crystal clear she had embarked on a loveless arrangement. He hadn't and couldn't have loved her all these years! How could she have been so blind? Gwen can't believe she's been living under the same roof with someone who would treat her with so much disrespect and act like their marriage meant nothing, as if she never existed! The thoughts she's having are not good. All the deep breaths in the world wouldn't calm her heart! "Ooh! Brock better make sure that was the last time he ever said anything to me again! After how he treated and spoke to me over that phone in front of her. Because next time, I don't know what I might do!" ***** Gwen tried to put that encounter with Amanda and Brock behind her. But It seemed almost impossible. 'The nerve of that woman! My head is killing me today of all days. I have so much to focus on—my new move to New York City, handling my deceased mother's estate and affairs, and all the unfinished business she left behind for me to take care of and protect. It was a lot of responsibility, and I couldn't waste my time or good energy worrying about Brock! All I know is Brock and Amanda better not cross my path.' Tears welled up in her eyes. The heat of anger surged through her weak body. "I can't let him break me! I just can't! I know I'm a strong woman. I've dealt with adversity all my life. My life, by far, has never been picturesque. I can't even say I came from a broken home because right out of the gate, my parents didn't want me. I was in foster care until, finally, I got adopted. But I've longed to find my biological parents. And each time I think I have family, I'm disappointed. When I found my dad, I learned that he had passed away. And this year, the same thing happened to me again! I've managed all this time independently without my parents. So, I can go on with my life without Brock!" When Gwen got to the bank to withdraw from the 10,000 dollars they had in their joint savings account. The screen kept reading NSF. (Non-sufficient Funds.) She left the ATM par, left the car, and went inside the bank to make the withdrawal. The bank clerk tells her the account has been closed. Gwen stood there in shock. "Brock! You're so evil!" she muttered. She was now forced to take what little money she had in her checking account. Five hundred bucks is all Gwen had to her name. Brock had closed the joint account they shared, leaving her virtually penniless. Resting her head on the steering wheel as her eyes filled with tears, Gwen prayed for the first time. She hoped that her birth mother had at least left a decent roof that she could have over her head and some money because now she had nothing. ***** The day before her departure, her best friend Livia stops by the house to help her pack and to say her goodbyes. "Hey, no more tears. Gwen, what's that look on your face?" Olivia asks, then smiling before Gwen can even explain. "It's called aggravation and irritations. Isn't it pretty?" Gwen replied. "Girl, you got this; I know you do. You always do. You go to New York, find happiness and success, and make Brock regret ever doing this to you!" "Yes, I would love to see him groveling at my feet, asking my forgiveness." "Yes, girl! You go to New York and work your butt off! And make that happen! I'll make sure he and Amanda hear all about your success! I got the feeling things will turn out great for you. Gwen, your heart has always been in the right place. I just know there's something good in store for you. I can feel it deep in my bones." "Olivia, you're the best!" The two ladies hugged and laughed. "Thanks for being a true friend, Olivia." **** The first thing the following day, her doorbell rang. "Good morning, Gwen; I came bearing a hot cup of fresh coffee for you, best wishes, and a safe trip to New York. Oh, I almost forgot, here's your ticket." "Peter, you purchased my ticket for me. How kind of you. But it's a one-way ticket." "Yes, do you have any reason to come back here?" "If you are speaking of my husband and marriage, no, that's over." "Start a new life, Gwen, and don't look back." "Thank you, Peter, for everything." "Thank me later. Now, let's get you to the airport." Peter says, taking her luggage out to his car. *** Gwen boarded the plane and took her seat. With a relaxed sigh, she clicked her iPad on. She planted her purse on the aisle seat next to her, hoping it would remain empty on the flight to New York. She was too ready to take her mind off Brock, Amanda, and Georgia. So, she got into her reading to make the time pass by faster. Gwen fluffed her pillow, placed it behind her back, and sank into the seat, waiting for lift-off, with her iPad in front of her face. She had no idea what she was about to encounter next. It was about to be a usual flight.
