CHAPTER 16 — Decision

CHAPTER 16 — Decision Aurora hung from the rusted iron rings, her shoulders screaming in protest as the full weight of her suspended body dragged against her sockets. The metal cuffs lining her wrists were unforgiving, biting deeply into her flesh with every involuntary micro-movement she made. Kael stood mere inches away, his towering frame casting a massive shadow over her. His eyes were half-closed, his nostrils flaring slightly as he noted the faint trail of vanilla and sandalwood still lingering on her skin. When he finally opened his amber eyes, the absolute proximity allowed her to see the calculation behind his cruelty. He was an Alpha completely unravelling under the weight of his thwarted ambitions and the political humiliation he had suffered at the hands of King Damian. Thwarted in the capital, he had returned to his estate desperate to reclaim absolute dominion over the only thing he had left to control: her. Hanging from the ceiling of the private wing, the heavy graveyard silence of the mansion pressed in on Aurora. She couldn't shake the memory of what she had seen days ago through the narrow crack of her cell door—the older maid's body, wrapped in a soiled, blood-stained linen sheet, being carried out of the Alpha's chambers. The woman had not survived the brutal rage of her master. Her throat had been crushed simply because she had served as a temporary vessel for the violence Kael couldn't unleash on the King. Looking at the dark stone walls around her, Aurora wondered if that would be her own destiny. Was she merely waiting for the night Kael’s volatile temper pushed him one step too far? The crude, transactional nature of her survival was a beautifully designed trap. Kael was keeping his word and feeding her two meals a day to restore her flesh, but she knew the food was a Trojan horse. Every bowl of thick meat broth carried the bitter, metallic aftertaste of wolfsbane. Kael was carefully regulating the dose; he didn't want her to die of starvation, but he absolutely refused to let her heal completely. She was trapped in an agonizing paradox. She could choose not to eat, starving herself to death and giving up her only chance at survival, proving her father right that she was a weak, useless link in the lineage. Or, she could eat, willingly ingesting the very poison that stripped her of her wolf, her supernatural healing, and her heritage. Every swallow tore away another piece of what made her a child of the Nightfall line, placing her inner spirit into a deeper, artificial coma. It left her a hollowed-out human shell, entirely vulnerable in a brutal world built for apex predators. The heavy atmosphere of the playroom shifted abruptly, snapping her out of her thoughts as Kael’s hand moved. The thick, calloused fingers that had been gripping her chin withdrew, replaced by a cold, terrifying weight against her collarbone. He was holding a small, silver hunting dagger. The metal caught the flickering torchlight, casting a jagged, orange reflection across his face. "You think you are hiding behind that silence, Aurora," Kael murmured, his voice a low, dangerous purr that vibrated against her bare skin. He didn't look angry; he looked amused, which was far worse. "You think because you do not weep like the others, you are keeping something from me. But a wolf can always read the posture of the prey." Without another word, Kael lowered the sharp point to her skin. He began to slowly, deliberately trace the contours of her body with the tip of the blade, dragging it down the slope of her shoulder, over her collarbone, and down the sensitive skin of her ribs. He wasn't trying to kill her—not yet. He was playing. He applied just enough pressure to create a jagged, shallow scratch. It was deep enough to part the pale skin, deep enough for a thin, crimson line of blood to well up and spill down her side, but not deep enough to threaten her life. He was mapping his new territory in blood, testing her threshold for pain, waiting for the familiar music of a prisoner's tears. The silver burned against her flesh, a toxic reaction that made her breath hitch. Because her wolf was drugged, the silver sting didn't just hurt; it lingered, a localized fire that cooked her cells. Aurora clutched her teeth together so hard her jaw ached, the iron, copper taste of her own blood filling her mouth as she bit her inner lip to keep from making a sound. The pain was a sharp, burning wire across her raw nerves, but she refused to give him the pleasure of a whimper. She wouldn't scream. She wouldn't beg. She would not let him see how much the poison in her veins was dragging her down. "Look at you," Kael whispered, leaning in closer, his breath hot against her ear. "The proud Nightfall line, bleeding out on my floor. Your father is currently sitting at my vanguard table, drinking my wine, completely unbothered by the price of his seat. No one is looking for you, little wolf. No one even remembers your name." He pressed the blade a fraction deeper into her lower ribs, dragging it sideways. A fresh bead of crimson blossomed against her pale skin, dripping down to stain the granite floor below. On the contrary, as the blood trickled down her ribs, her gaze toward him hardened. The glassy, drug-induced veil vanished completely, replaced by an icy, diamond-sharp stare of absolute defiance. She looked directly into his amber eyes, refusing to drop her gaze, refusing to show the submission his Alpha aura demanded. She didn't know what would come next in this chamber, or what horrors Kael had planned for the rest of the night. She didn't even know if her physical body would survive until morning, or if she would end up wrapped in a soiled sheet like the maid before her. But as she hung from the iron chains, bleeding and stripped of her wolf, Aurora made her final decision. She was not going to give him the pleasure of a victory. If he wanted to break her, he would have to tear her apart piece by piece, because the girl inside the cage was never going to bow. Kael wanted a broken pet to soothe his wounded pride, but as she stared back at him through the pain, she made a silent vow: she would let him bleed her white before she ever gave him her submission.
