CHAPTER 17 — The Breaking Ground
The silence in the vaulted chamber was more suffocating than the heat of the single flickering torch. Kael took his time, moving with the methodical, agonizing slowness of a butcher who prided himself on his craft. He didn't want to rush this; the political sting from the capital still burned in his veins, and Aurora was the only medicine that could soothe it.
He moved around her suspended form like a phantom, the silver hunting dagger dancing between his fingers. With a surgeon's precision, he added to the map of crimson lines he was etching into her pale skin. One shallow drag across her left shoulder. Another along the curve of her ribs. A third, deeper slice across the meat of her thigh. Tiny, dark streams of blood flowed steadily from the multiple cuts, pooling at her hips before dripping rhythmically onto the grooved granite floor.
Yet, she gave him nothing.
Her head hung low, her silver-blonde hair shielding her face, but every time he stepped into her line of sight, her silver-gray eyes remained locked onto his with an icy, unyielding fury. She refused to make a single sound. No gasp, no groan, no pathetic whimper for mercy.
The silence infuriated him. It mocked his Alpha authority, whispering that even though he held her life by a thread, he had not touched the core of who she was.
Kael stopped in front of her, leaning in close until his amber eyes reflected in the sweat on her brow. "You have more Nightfall blood in your veins than your father will ever have," he hissed, his face twisting into a cruel, mocking sneer. "But what good is that pure blood now? Sadly, you let your little brother die and ruined your own future as well. Look at where your precious family loyalty got you."
The mention of Evan was a physical blow, a strike far sharper than the silver blade. Aurora’s jaw locked, her teeth grinding together so hard she feared they would shatter. The agony of the memory flared in her chest, but she forced the rising sob back down into the dark, wrapping her hatred around it like iron armor.
Kael’s face twisted with a sudden, ugly rage when he saw her eyes harden instead of filling with tears. He tossed the silver dagger onto the mahogany table and reached for the heavy leather whip resting against the wall. "Let’s see how long that pride holds up when the flesh starts to tear."
The first strike was a deafening crack that shattered the silence of the private wing. The leather bit into her abdomen, leaving a thick, welted line that instantly split and began to bleed. Aurora’s body convulsed violently in the iron cuffs, her toes snapping upward as her entire nervous system ignited in agony.
She clamped her teeth together so hard a sharp crack echoed inside her skull, her lips locking into a bloodied, white line.
Kael didn't wait. He struck again. And again. The rhythmic, sickening sound of leather hitting bare flesh echoed through the chamber. He whipped her systematically, targeting her ribs, her thighs, and her stomach, intentionally avoiding her back to preserve the skin for his later amusement. Blood splattered against the dark stone walls, and still, the room remained devoid of her voice. She endured the torment in absolute, terrifying silence, anchoring herself in the cold stone of her hatred until the room began to spin. The orange torchlight faded into a dull gray, and her head slumped forward as her consciousness finally surrendered to the dark.
Kael stopped, his breathing heavy, his chest heaving as he stared at her limp, unmoving form. The chains creaked softly in the quiet room.
"Oh no," Kael whispered, a cruel, manic chuckle escaping his lips. "You don't get to escape me that easily."
He wasn't about to let this opportunity pass. He had waited days for her body to recover enough to withstand him, and he was going to taste his victory while she was awake to feel it. He strode to the corner of the room, lifting a heavy iron bucket filled with ice-cold water drawn from the mansion’s deep well. With a violent jerk, he threw the freezing liquid directly over her battered body.
The shock was instantaneous. The freezing water hit her raw, burning wounds like liquid fire, numbing the superficial pain while violently dragging her mind back from the brink of blackness. Aurora choked, coughing up a mixture of water and blood as her eyes flew open, her body shivering uncontrollably against the iron rings.
Kael tossed the bucket aside, the clattering metal signaling the next phase of her nightmare. He stepped directly in front of her, his massive frame completely cutting off her view of the room. His amber eyes were entirely consumed by the feral light of his inner wolf, his restraint entirely discarded.
Without a word of warning, he reached down and lifted her right leg, pinning it against his hip to stabilize her suspended weight. He took his time, savoring the sudden, frantic terror that flickered behind her glassy gaze before he brutally penetrated her.
Aurora’s eyes widened, her vision fracturing into a thousand points of white light as the sheer, agonizing violation tore through her. Her breath hitched in her throat, a choked, suffocating gasp escaping her lips, but she forced it down. She bit her lower lip until her teeth sank deep into the flesh, sealing her mouth shut against the scream that threatened to tear her throat apart.
Kael growled, frustrated by her continued refusal to beg. His desire to dominate her completely overcame his human mind. His thick hands gripped her back, and with a sudden surge of feral power, his claws extended. He didn't retract them; instead, he deliberately dug the sharp, black tips deep into her flesh. He dragged them downward, leaving five deep, parallel furrows on either side of her spine—permanent marks meant to brand her as his property for the rest of her life.
The pain was a blinding, suffocating blanket, but Aurora held on. Her hands curled into tight, white-knuckled fists inside the iron cuffs, her forehead pressed against the cold metal chains above her. She kept her lips tightly shut, denying him the satisfaction of her voice, treating her silence as the last fortress he could not breach.
Eventually, Kael grew bored of her quiet resistance. Without her whimpering or crying out his name, the act lost its transactional thrill, turning into a tedious exercise in brute force.
Once he had satisfied his primitive needs, he stepped back, his face a mask of cold detachment. The manic energy had left him, replaced by a sullen, irritated boredom. He looked at her bleeding, shivering form, still hanging from the ceiling, still staring at him with those diamond-sharp, hateful eyes through the blood-matted strands of her hair.
A sudden, petulant surge of anger washed over him.
"Useless creature," Kael spat.
Instead of unlocking the mechanism, Kael grabbed Aurora by the waist and used his full, devastating Alpha force to hurl her across the room. The sheer, explosive violence of the throw was more than the old hardware could handle. The heavy iron chains were ripped completely out of the ceiling structure, the granite fracturing with a loud crack as the anchor bolts tore free.
The sudden, violent torque snapped both of Aurora's wrists inside the iron cuffs before the metal rings slid off her hands. She flew through the air like a discarded rag doll, her body crashing brutally against the opposite stone wall before slumping onto the bloody floor. A sharp, sickening pop echoed through the room as her left shoulder dislocated upon impact.
She lay in the shallow drainage groove, her body broken, her wrists twisted at unnatural angles, her blood mixing with the stagnant water on the floor. She couldn't move; she could barely breathe, her lungs protesting against the fractured ribs.
Kael didn't offer her a second glance. He walked to the heavy oak door, pulling it open and shouting into the corridor.
"Maids!" he barked, his voice echoing through the silent mansion. "Get in here and clean up this mess."
The two young beta maids from before scrambled into the room, their faces entirely bloodless as they took in the devastation of the chamber. They fell to their knees, trembling so hard they could barely lift the heavy basin of water they had brought.
"Take her back to the upper cell," Kael commanded coldly, adjusting his trousers as he prepared to leave the room. "Wash the filth off her. Feed her. Treat her broken bones and bind her wounds. She is to receive her two meals a day, exactly as before, with the specified dose of wolfsbane. I want her healed within the fortnight. We are going to do this again, and next time, she will learn how to speak."
"Yes, Alpha. Right away, Alpha," the maids whispered, their voices choked with horror as they gently, frantically began to lift Aurora's broken, bleeding form from the stone floor.
Kael strode out of the playroom, the heavy door slamming shut behind him, leaving Aurora in the quiet care of the weeping servants. She lay semi-conscious in their arms, her fractured wrists throbbing with a white-hot agony, but as the darkness threatened to pull her under for the final time, a single, frozen thought remained embedded in her mind: I didn't scream. She had won the night, and that tiny, blood-soaked victory would be the anchor that kept her alive in the dark.
