CHAPTER 18 — Noble Daughters

CHAPTER 18 — Noble Daughters The Grand Conservatory of the Citadel of Suns had been transformed into an exhibition of wealth and desperation. The air was a suffocating tapestry of competing fragrances, expensive imported silks, and the low, musical hum of aristocratic chatter. Crystal chandeliers hung low from the vaulted ceiling, casting a warm, deceptive glow over the assembled wolves of the high court. Queen Selene sat gracefully on an elevated velvet settee, her eyes tracking the movement of the crowd with a practiced, elegant vigilance. She had arranged this gathering under the guise of an early summer solstice celebration, but everyone in the room knew its true purpose. She was hoping—perhaps naively—that Damian would finally look past his stubborn ideals and accept one of the noble daughters pursuing him. The kingdom needed stability, the throne needed an heir, and Selene was running out of ways to hold the ambitious regional Alphas at bay. Damian stood near the stone archway overlooking the gardens, a glass of dark amber wine untouched in his large hand. He wore a formal royal tunic of deep navy, the silver thread of the Virell crest catching the light, but his posture was that of a warrior scanning a battlefield rather than a host welcoming guests. His winter-sea eyes were cold, distant, and utterly unyielding. "You look as though you are preparing to execute half the room, brother," Baelen murmured, stepping up beside him. "If I could, I would," Damian rasped, his voice a low vibration that didn't carry past his brother's ears. "Look at them. They aren't here to celebrate. They are here to hunt." The competition tonight was particularly aggressive, spearheaded by the two most powerful houses in the southern and eastern territories: House Blackthorn and House Ashenveil. Both families had long coveted a direct connection to the throne, and with the growing whispers of rogue coordination on the borders, their desire to secure royal protection had reached a frantic pitch. Alpha Blackthorn, a burly man with eyes like flint, was the first to push his daughter forward. Lady Vivienne Blackthorn stepped into Damian’s path, her dark hair styled in elaborate braids, her silk gown the color of fresh blood. She bowed low, her movements rehearsed to perfection, ensuring her neck—the ultimate vulnerability of a werewolf—was exposed just long enough to signal submission. "Alpha King," Vivienne purred, her voice dripping with calculated sweetness as she rose. "The Blackthorn packs have recently expanded our hunting grounds along the southern ridges. My father tells me the terrain is beautiful, but it lacks the... majestic security of the capital. I had hoped to discuss the trade routes with you personally." Behind her, Alpha Blackthorn watched like a hawk, his chest puffed out, waiting to see if the King would take the bait. Damian’s gaze fell upon the girl. He didn't smell a woman; he smelled the heavy, metallic scent of political ambition. Her inner wolf was silent, projecting an artificial docility designed to appeal to a dominant male, but her eyes were calculating the value of the crown above his head. "The trade routes are managed by Commander Vance and the Royal Council, Lady Vivienne," Damian replied, his tone polite but entirely devoid of warmth. "If your father’s packs require assistance, he may submit a formal petition to the war room. Enjoy the evening." He stepped past her without a second glance, leaving the Blackthorn girl frozen in her tracking grin while her father’s face flushed a dangerous crimson. But the gauntlet was far from over. Before Damian could reach the relative sanctuary of the terrace, Alpha Ashenveil intercepted him. The eastern lord was accompanied by his twin daughters, Lady Clara and Lady Elena, both dressed in shimmering silver gowns that mirrored the royal colors. "Your Majesty," Alpha Ashenveil declared, bowing smoothly. "House Ashenveil has always been the shield of the eastern valleys. We have watched with great admiration how you have held the Dominion together. My daughters have spent the spring preparing an offering of verse and history for the royal library, hoping to demonstrate the deep loyalty our house possesses." Clara and Elena stepped forward in unison, their smiles identical, their scents—a cloying blend of jasmine and musk—pushed toward him in a subtle wave of pheromones. They were practically pressing themselves into his space, their fathers’ eyes urging them to make a lasting impression, to touch his arm, to elicit even a flicker of possessive interest from the Alpha King. Damian felt a wave of profound disgust ripple through his chest. It was the same transactional game that Kael had played, just dressed in finer clothes. These Alphas were weaponizing their own children, tossing them into the royal arena like commodities to be bartered for influence and military guarantees. "The royal library is always open to historical records, Alpha Ashenveil," Damian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that caused both twins to instinctively take a half-step back. "But the loyalty of a house is proven on the borders with sharp claws and spilled blood, not with verse in a ballroom. Excuse me." With a firm, unyielding step, Damian broke through the circle of courtiers, ignoring the disappointed sighs and tight, angry whispers that followed in his wake. He strode out onto the balcony, the cool night air hitting his face like a splash of clear water, washing away the suffocating perfume of the high court. He leaned his hands against the stone railing, staring out over the dark expanse of the capital. From the settee inside, Queen Selene watched his retreating back and let out a soft, defeated sigh. Damian remained a solitary King, entirely closed off to the elite of his world, completely unaware that the only scent capable of cracking his frozen heart was currently bleeding out on a stone floor hundreds of miles to the north.
