CHAPTER 23 — The Red Line
The candles in the war chamber had burned down to pools of stagnant wax, casting long, erratic shadows across the walls, yet Damian remained frozen over the oak map. His hands were pressed flat against the carved wood, his knuckles turning white under the immense pressure of his weight. His winter-sea eyes were locked onto the northern frontier, tracking the thin, painted trade routes that veered dangerously close to the Shadowfang territory.
The silence in the room stretched tense and heavy, broken only by the occasional crackle of the dying hearth. Now that the initial shock of Oakhaven's total destruction had settled into cold, hard data, the true geometry of the threat emerged. The rogues weren't drifting through the wilderness like a directionless pack of ghosts. They were carving a path with mathematical precision.
"Look at the grid," Damian spoke, his voice a low, gravelly command that brought Ronan and Baelen instantly back to his side. He dragged a heavy, clawed finger from the smoldering remains of Oakhaven westward, passing three distinct carved markers on the map. "They aren't expanding outward randomly. They are cutting a straight line. Oakhaven was merely the first domino. It wasn’t just a slaughterhouse; it was a tactical roadblock meant to blind our vanguards from the west."
He tapped three smaller carved symbols located just outside the Shadowfang perimeter—three vital outpost stations named Riverbend, Grey-Gully, and Pine-Ridge. Like Oakhaven, these locations served as critical transportation hubs, communication networks, and trading stations. They functioned as the primary sensory organs for the royal scouts on the frontier, funneling intelligence back to the capital.
"If the strategy holds, these three villages are the next targets," Damian declared, his jaw tightening into an unyielding line. "The rogues are systematically blinding our northern eyes. If these three stations are erased from the map, the entire upper tier of the Dominion will become a pitch-black blind spot. We won't be able to see a military advance until a hostile army is already crossing our southern thresholds."
"Sire, our closest royal vanguards are a full two-day run from those positions," Ronan warned, his expression grim as he calculated the vast distance and the rough, rocky terrain. "If a coordinated rogue battalion strikes tonight or tomorrow, the local defenses won't hold the perimeters alone. They will be slaughtered just like Oakhaven."
"Then we change the variables," Damian growled, his Alpha command flaring through the room with a sudden, suffocating intensity that made the surrounding vanguards instinctively lower their heads. He straightened up to his full, imposing height, his towering frame casting a massive shadow across the war map. "Ronan, send out direct, high-priority orders to dispatch multiple royal patrols to Riverbend, Grey-Gully, and Pine-Ridge immediately. I want our elite warriors integrated into their local defense lines before the next moonrise. No delays. No excuses. If they must run through the night without rest, then they run."
"And what about Kael?" Baelen asked, his arms crossed over his broad chest as his gaze drifted to the dark crags representing the Shadowfang mountains. "Those three stations sit right on his western flank. His standing army is fully trained, fully armed, and could reinforce those positions in a matter of hours if they deployed from the Drovann manor."
Damian’s eyes darkened, a flash of dangerous, icy fury rippling through his irises. "We force his hand. We give him no room to hide in the shadows."
He stepped toward the heavy writing desk at the side of the chamber, snatching a piece of thick royal parchment. He dipped a heavy quill into black ink, his movements furious and precise as he penned an ironclad royal decree.
By order of the Alpha King,
The Lord of the Shadowfang Pack is hereby commanded to immediately dispatch full military support and vanguards to the neighboring stations of Riverbend, Grey-Gully, and Pine-Ridge. Coordinated rogue incursions are verified to be moving west of your border. A massive tactical strike is expected within the upcoming days.
Fail to reinforce these positions, and your absence will be treated as direct, hostile defiance of the crown.
Damian slammed the royal wax seal onto the bottom of the parchment, the crimson emblem of the Virell house looking like a fresh splash of blood against the pale page. He handed it to a waiting messenger scout. "Run this to the Shadowfang manor. Push your wolf to its absolute limit. Make sure it lands directly in Kael's hands before midnight."
As the scout vanished into the dark corridor, Damian walked back to the map, leaning his heavy weight against the table once more.
At this point, a profound, simmering frustration burned beneath his skin. He truly didn't know what to believe about the northern lord anymore. Was Kael truly just a stupid, arrogant Alpha—so consumed by his own domestic greed, his internal politics, and his obsession with micro-managing his internal army that he genuinely hadn't realized the strategic slaughter happening just outside his own borders? Or was he seriously, treacherously cooperating with the rogues, using them as a feral shield to blind the crown while he prepared a strike of his own against the throne?
Either way, Damian’s personal theories didn't matter tonight. The politics could wait. The investigations could wait. His main focus now lay entirely in protecting those three remaining villages from being erased from the map before it was too late. Real wolves, real families, and young pups were sleeping in those wooden cottages, completely unaware that the shadow that had claimed his father was currently circling their borders, waiting for the dark.
"We have drawn our red line," Damian murmured, staring down at the northern trade routes. His inner wolf rumbled with a lethal, possessive promise to protect his people. "If Kael ignores the order, he reveals himself as a traitor, and I will execute him myself. If he obeys, we secure the border. But I will not lose another forty-two souls to the dark while I sit on this throne."
