The defeat at Chase's hands had left Lilly with a bitter taste of disappointment. The bruises and broken rib had healed, but the bruises on her pride were far from fading. The tension between her and Chase was visible, and it only deepened as Nathan Carter made his next move.
"Lilly," her father's voice boomed through the training grounds the next morning. Lilly groaned, Nathan hadn't even bothered checking on her after the fight. Charlie and Molly helped get her back on her feet after the arena ranking. they had said Chase had checked on her reporting back to her father. Didn't make it better, in Lilly's opinion.
"Your performance in the arena was lacking, but I see potential in you Lilly. However, potential alone is not enough in this pack. You need to be trained properly." Nathen smiled.
Lilly stood in the middle of the training area. She stared at Nathan, her jaw clenched in defiance, but the weight of his authority kept her silent.
Nathan's gaze shifted to Chase, who stood a few paces behind Nathen, his expression unreadable as he looked at Lilly.
"Chase, as my beta, it is your responsibility to train Lilly. She needs to learn discipline, strength, and the true meaning of loyalty. You will oversee her training until I deem her ready." Nathen ordered Chase.
Lilly's heart sank at her father's words. The last person she wanted to be trained by was Chase, the very person who had beaten her and kept his connection to her father a secret. The person she once called friend, now she didn't know. But there was no room for protest; her father's powerful command was final. Lilly sighed.
Chase nodded, his expression firm. "Yes, Alpha."
Nathan gave them both a final, stern look before turning on his heel and leaving the training grounds. As his figure disappeared, the tension between Lilly and Chase thickened like a fog.
Lilly turned to face Chase, her eyes narrowing with unresolved anger. "So, you're supposed to make me a better fighter now? After everything?"
Chase met her gaze, his expression softening slightly.
"I know you're upset, Lilly. I would be too if I were in your shoes. But this isn't about what happened between us. It's about making you stronger, so you can survive in this pack."
Lilly scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "It's not just about the fight, Chase. You lied to me, you hid the truth. You were part of my father's pack the whole time, and you never said a word."
Chase sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I didn't lie to you. I just... I didn't tell you everything. I didn't know how to, not after everything you'd been through. but your father isn't as bad as you think he is."
"That doesn't make it okay," Lilly shot back, her voice laced with hurt. "You knew what he did to my mother, and you still stayed loyal to him. How am I supposed to trust you?"
Chase's eyes softened with regret. "I stayed because I had no choice, Lilly. My loyalty to the pack was ingrained in me long before I met you. But that doesn't mean I don't care about you. I was trying to protect you, in my way. Nathen has taken my brother and me in when we lost our parents when we were young. When he became the Alpha of the broken pack. we all have our struggles not just you."
Lilly looked away, her heart heavy with conflicting emotions. She wanted to forgive Chase, to understand his reasoning, but the betrayal still stung. "I don't need your protection," she said quietly. "I just need to know that I can rely on you here."
Chase stepped closer, his voice gentle. "You can rely on me, Lilly. I swear it. I'll do everything I can to help you become the fighter you need to be."
For a moment, they stood in silence, the weight of their shared history hanging between them. Lilly's anger slowly ebbed, replaced by a reluctant acceptance. She felt a pull towards Chase she hadn't felt before. She knew that if she was going to survive in her father's pack, she needed to put aside her personal feelings and focus on the training.
"Fine," Lilly said finally, meeting Chase's gaze once more. "but I'm still mad at you."
Chase nodded, his expression serious. "We'll start with the basics, then move on to more advanced techniques. You'll need to be strong, fast, and strategic. This pack doesn't tolerate weakness."
The first few days of training were grueling. Chase pushed Lilly to her limits, forcing her to spar against tougher opponents and endure more intense drills. Despite her initial reluctance, Lilly found herself improving with each session. Chase's knowledge and experience were undeniable, and under his guidance, she began to develop a sharper edge.
"getting better Lilly"
"where you spying at Crescent on me?" Lilly asked as she dodged an attack.
"No, but when I did find you I reported back to your father."
You jerk, Were we even friends?" Lilly growled hitting him in his arm, Chase looked at her swiping her feet.
"yes I am, I find your company intriguing, I didn't mean to get you taken from Ian. We need allies"
"I'm the pawn, you and my father need?"
"yes he does, wasn't my plan, I just wanted you to know who your father was Lilly. He isn't as bad as you think him to be." Chase sighed running his hands through his short black hair. Lilly let it go knowing she let her anger out on her father instead.
As they trained together, Chase would occasionally leave her side to do his rounds through the Crescent Moon Pack, checking on the other wolves and ensuring the pack's operations ran smoothly. During these moments, Lilly would practice on her own, pushing herself harder, determined to prove her worth. Lilly wanted to prove she was strong and ready for anything her father threw at her.
But even as she grew stronger, the tension between her and Chase remained. Every time he returned to the training grounds, the unresolved feelings between them would bubble to the surface, threatening to derail their progress.
One afternoon, after an especially intense sparring session, Lilly finally spoke up. "Why do you stay loyal to him, Chase? After everything he's done, why do you follow him so blindly?"
Chase paused, lowering his fists as he caught his breath. He looked at Lilly, his eyes filled with a deep, unspoken pain. "It's not as simple as loyalty, Lilly. Nathan may be your father, but he's also my Alpha. My duty to the pack comes first, no matter how you feel about him."
Lilly frowned, trying to make sense of his words. "But what about what he did to my mother? Doesn't that matter to you?"
"It matters," Chase admitted, his voice strained. "But in this world, the Alpha's word is law. If I defy him, it could mean my life and the lives of my brother. I've had to make difficult choices, Lilly—choices I'm not proud of. I know I was mean when you first met me at college but you help change me for the better. "
Lilly studied him, searching for any sign of deceit, but all she saw was a man trapped between his duty and his conscience. For the first time, she felt a flicker of understanding for Chase, a realization that he was as much a victim of this world as she was.
"I don't agree with everything he's done," Chase continued, his voice low. "But if I can help you become stronger, maybe I can make things right. Maybe I can help you change this pack from within."
Lilly's anger softened, replaced by a tentative hope. "Maybe," she said, her voice quiet. "But we'll only find out if we keep training."
Chase nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Then let's not waste any more time."
With renewed determination, they resumed their training. Though the path ahead was uncertain, Lilly knew she couldn't afford to give up. She would keep fighting, keep pushing herself, and with Chase by her side, she would find a way to carve out her place in her father's pack.
