Alexander's penthouse was nothing like I expected.
I thought it would be cold, all glass and steel like a billionaire's cliché. But it was warm — dark wood floors, soft lighting, bookshelves lining one wall. It felt... lived in.
He gave me a quick tour, pointing out the guest room like a perfect gentleman. "You can have this one. Bathroom's through there."
I nodded, clutching my overnight bag that one of his people had somehow already brought from my apartment.
"Dinner?" he asked.
"I ate at work."
"Liar," he said softly. "I can hear your stomach from here."
I couldn't help smiling a little. Damn werewolf hearing.
"Fine. Something light."
He made sandwiches — actual sandwiches — in a kitchen bigger than my entire apartment. Roast beef, fresh bread, some fancy mustard. We ate at the counter, not the formal dining table.
It felt weirdly normal.
"So," I said between bites, "how does this protection thing work exactly?"
"I have security around the building. My most trusted wolves. No one gets in or out without me knowing."
"That's... intense."
"It's necessary." He set his plate down. "The call you got wasn't empty threat. Someone's watching."
I shivered. "Who?"
"Could be rivals. Could be old enemies from my father's time. Or someone connected to Jax's pack — they're not happy I'm mated to their rejected Luna."
I pushed my plate away. "I don't want to be the reason for pack wars or whatever."
"You're not the reason. You're the prize they're afraid I'll become stronger with."
I rolled my eyes. "Arrogant much?"
He grinned. "Confident."
After dinner, he showed me the balcony. The view was breathtaking — the whole city spread out below us like diamonds on black velvet.
I leaned on the railing. "This is crazy, you know. Two weeks ago I was just Elena Voss, designer. Now I'm hiding in the Alpha King's penthouse."
"Two weeks ago, I was just going through the motions," he said quietly, standing behind me. "Ruling, working, existing. Now... I feel alive."
His arms came around me from behind, careful, like he was giving me space to pull away.
I didn't.
His warmth felt good. Safe.
Too safe.
"I can't just leave my life," I whispered.
"You don't have to leave it. Just... let me in."
I turned in his arms to face him. "What if I get hurt again?"
"I won't let that happen."
"You can't promise that."
"I can promise I'll destroy anyone who tries."
His eyes flashed silver — his wolf showing.
I reached up and touched his face. "You're scary, you know that?"
"Only to people who threaten what's mine."
The kiss started slow this time. Testing. Gentle.
But it didn't stay gentle.
His hands moved to my waist, pulling me closer. My fingers tangled in his hair.
When we finally broke apart, we were both breathing hard.
"Guest room is still yours," he said roughly. "If that's what you want."
I looked at him for a long moment.
Then I took his hand and led him toward the master bedroom.
One night.
That's what I told myself.
Just one night to see what this bond really felt like.
But as he closed the door behind us, I knew I was lying to myself.
One night would never be enough.
