Chapter 1
The scent of damp earth and rotting wood filled Hannah’s nose as she scrubbed the worn stone floors of the servant quarters. Her hands, rough from years of hard labor, trembled slightly as she wrung out the filthy rag. The Ravenwood Pack’s servants lived in squalor, their existence barely acknowledged by the wolves who ruled over them. But Hannah had learned long ago that complaining only led to pain. She adjusted her position, shifting onto her knees as she continued her task. The coarse fabric of her thin tunic did little to protect her from the cold drafts that crept through the cracks in the wooden walls. Winter was coming, and she dreaded it. Servants were not given proper clothing or enough food. The weak did not survive. Yet tonight, for the first time in years, she dared to hope. **Her eighteenth birthday had arrived.** It was the night of the Awakening Ceremony, the sacred ritual when young wolves would experience their first shift. For most, it was a moment of celebration, of stepping into their true nature. For Hannah, it was a chance a desperate, and fragile chance that the Moon Goddess would remember her bloodline. She was Shadow Moon. A descendant of greatness. Or at least, she had been, before her family’s fall from power. Now, she was nothing. A slave. A nameless girl among the remnants of a once-great pack that had been destroyed before she was even born. The Shadow Moon Pack, once one of the most powerful in existence, had been shattered in a single night of betrayal. Those who weren’t slaughtered had been taken as prisoners, their lineage reduced to servitude. Hannah’s mother had died when she was young, leaving her to care for her three younger brothers. Over the years, she had lost two of them. One to sickness, the other to a beating when he had dared to steal food to survive. Now, only she and Aaron remained. The sound of boots echoing against the stone floors made her stomach twist with unease. The scent of approaching wolves filled the servant quarters—dominant, powerful. “Get up, slave,” a cold voice commanded. Hannah lifted her gaze to meet the piercing green eyes of Beta Lucian, the second-in-command of the Ravenwood Pack. His towering frame loomed over her, his presence suffocating. “You don’t want to be late, do you?” he sneered. “Would be a shame if you missed your own Awakening.” Hannah clenched her fists but said nothing. Years of submission had taught her that defiance was useless. Without a word, she rose to her feet, ignoring the ache in her knees from kneeling for hours. Lucian smirked and turned on his heel. “Follow me.” She obeyed, keeping her gaze lowered as she trailed behind him through the winding corridors of the packhouse. The other servants shrank back as she passed, their eyes filled with pity. They knew what tonight meant for her. The Awakening Ceremony was a sacred tradition, but for those of Shadow Moon blood, it was something more. Every two generations, the Moon Goddess was said to bless one of them, marking them as her chosen. The past descendants who had received the blessing had been the pride of their pack powerful, revered leaders. But those days were long gone. Hannah’s ancestors had made a mistake. A terrible one. A power-hungry descendant had sought to take the Goddess’s gift by force, and in doing so, had doomed their bloodline. The Ravenwood Pack had taken advantage of their weakness, enslaving them and waiting. Waiting for another blessing to emerge. Waiting to steal it. A chill ran down Hannah’s spine as she was led into the ceremonial hall. The chamber was vast, its walls adorned with tapestries depicting the history of the Ravenwood Pack. A massive bonfire blazed at the center of the stone platform, its flames casting eerie shadows across the faces of the gathered pack members. Alpha Magnus stood at the head of the assembly, his expression unreadable. He was a cruel man, one who had built his power on the bones of those he had conquered. Around him, the elders of Ravenwood stood in a semi-circle, their eyes fixed on her. Anticipation. Hunger. They were waiting to see if she would be the one. Hannah’s heart pounded against her ribs. She wasn’t ready. Lucian grabbed her wrist, dragging her forward until she stood at the very edge of the fire’s glow. “Tonight,” the elder in the center began, “we witness the Awakening of those who have reached the age of maturity.” More young wolves were led forward—sons and daughters of warriors, noble bloodlines that had flourished under Ravenwood’s rule. They stood with their heads high, confidence radiating from them. Hannah felt like an intruder among them. The elder raised his hands, and the room fell silent. “The Moon Goddess will choose her own.” Hannah closed her eyes as the ceremony began. One by one, the young wolves around her started to tremble, their bodies shifting as their wolves emerged for the first time. A boy to her right let out a triumphant howl as his wolf took form—a sleek, silver beast with piercing blue eyes. The pack cheered. Another girl transformed, her black wolf standing proud. More and more wolves shifted. And then there was only Hannah. Standing alone. Nothing happened. A crushing silence filled the chamber. The elder’s expression twisted in disappointment. The other wolves sneered, their excitement turning to mockery. “She’s nothing,” one whispered. “A Shadow Moon without a blessing.” “She’s just a weak slave.” Hannah’s body trembled, but not from a shift. From the realization that she had been rejected. The Moon Goddess had abandoned her. Her throat tightened, but she refused to cry. Not here. Not in front of them. Lucian stepped forward, his smirk growing. “Well, well,” he murmured, circling her like a predator. “Looks like you’re just another useless Shadow Moon after all.” Hannah swallowed hard, keeping her expression blank. Alpha Magnus’s gaze darkened. “She is of no value to us.” The words sealed her fate. The elders exchanged glances. A silent agreement passed between them. And then Magnus spoke the words that shattered her world. “The Shadow Moon bloodline is a waste of our resources. It’s time to end them for good.” Hannah’s breath caught. **No.** The realization hit her like a physical blow. They weren’t just going to punish her. They were going to wipe out what remained of her people. Her brother. Aaron. Hannah’s heart slammed against her ribs as fear flooded her veins. She had to run. Before it was too late. Before her brother was killed. As the wolves around her laughed and jeered, as the elders turned away in disinterest, Hannah made a silent vow. She would not die here. She would not let Aaron die here. She would escape. No matter the cost.
