Eleven Years Later, “The thing is Alexandria, we're not sure how we feel about you taking the reins from your father completely”. I leaned back into my chair, crossing my leg over the other before exhaling. This was one of the downsides of being a woman in the corporate world. All they see is an incompetent woman, who wouldn't be able to handle the troubling corporate world at all, but I wasn't about to be a pushover or a footstool to these narcissist misogynist for shares I've been working my whole life for. “I've been working right along side my father, since I turned eighteen. Winston Inc has blossomed under my supervision, so what the hell you talking bout Clayton”. The conference room that was being used for the board meeting next door, instantly hushed as did the one we're in. Clayton—the third highest share holder glared at me, before turning around to look at my father, and the rest of the five men at the meeting. I noticed, the light scowl on my father's head, and the constant shaking of his legs, which meant he was trying so hard not to laugh. “Ezekiel, something you like to add”. My god father, –Odell added. “I think we could come to some kind of conclusion about this”. He turned to look at me, and I already knew what was coming. “Gave us a minute Xandi”. And I was already up on my feet and already half way at the door, when he said that. **** Later that evening, “Well, f$ck them and f$ck their children”. I yelled in frustration to my dad pacing the den. “Alexa!”. My mom Gloria, chided and I just slumped into the leathery sofa, landing with a ompfff. “Think about it princess”. My dad tried to reason with me. “It's a little bit over due for it”. “Don't see how, getting tied down to some stupid i***t, is going to affect me being the boss”. I boomed out feeling my anger taking over me. “So, I'm an i***t then”. My mom chirped in, trying to play the guilt card. “Don't even go there, Gloria”. A loud gasp escaped my mother's lips and my father raised a warning brow at me. “I'm sorry mom, the guilt trip won't work today” “I have been in charge and have been doing fine”. I screamed picking my Fendi, purse. “Don't need some man to keep doing that, and Clayton, and the rest of the board could either suck it up or get the f$ck out of my way”. “I'm not asking you to Alexandria, find yourself a husband or I find one for you”. A cold shiver went down my spine, and not from the air conditioning, that was on full blast for the summer, but from the dead serious tone of my father. I refused to acknowledge the threat, and just kept walking out of the estate I grew up in and into my waiting car. *** “Sabina, he was fu$king serious”. I wailed to my best friend the minute I walked into the apartment we shared. She was sprawled out on the sofa, red hair in a messy bun, glasses on, waffles and syrup all over and the TV, on ABC good morning, enjoying her Saturday morning why I was stuck working. “If you really want the company, you'd do anything for it”. I stopped reading the files and turned to glare at her. “Geez Alexa, I mean come on, you've been working your butt off for that company and you taking over would make you one of the richest women in the world, so getting married shouldn't be what would stop you from accomplishing that” . Sabina, took a deep breath after her little rant. “I know it's crazy, but I wouldn't give something that big to a single woman, or man”. “All you just said is bullshit, I mean Mark Zuckerberg, built his company scratch and he didn't get pressurized to get married. And a lot of business owners are all single.” I said turning my swivel chair to face her. “Well, Jeff Bezos, is recently divorced and you don't think that after the cheating scandal, a lot of his investors and shareholders aren't gonna pull out?” She challenged with raised brows, her arms around her chest. “Reputation matters a lot to people, so with you being a boss b$tch all by yourself and all that jazz, you still need the right partner to show face” Smiling she shoved another waffle in her mouth, probably feeling perky for having the last word. “Plus, I want to wear a bridesmaids dress” She added with a mouthful of pancakes. **** “Miss Winston, your father is here for you”. My secretary said from the intercom.. I exhaled, looking at the tall dark figure of my dad entering. “So, I gave my baby a proposition, and she just stayed away for two weeks.” My dad said taking a seat on the sofa at the other end of the room. I massaged my temples, feeling the headache coming back again. “Daddy, what a pleasant surprise”. He raised a brow at me at the sarcastic smile in my voice. “Fine, what do you want?”. “Your mother is having a little party to celebrate my forty years of business, before the big retirement party”. I shrugged my shoulders at him, not really seeing how this was my business. “I need you to be there”. “Hell no! You don't need me there”. He raised another brow. “Excuse my French”. “Be there Xandi”. “You know, I don't really like this new tone, you're using on me”. He laughed, shaking his head. “I don't like this sh$t, at all” “Alexandria” “No daddy! This whole arranged marriage sh$t—i mean stuff” I corrected at my father's still raised brows. “This whole thing is whack daddy, I don't a man to run this company and I certainly don't need you to find me one” “Alexandria, you're going to thank me later”. He now stood in front of me. “You know I would never do anything that won't be for your own good princess, just be there!”. He kissed top of my head walking out of my office. I sighed picking up my phone. “Sabina, get ready!” If I was going to go to a party where there would be fake smiles, judgemental stares and my potential future husband, Sabina was definitely going to suffer through it with me. ****** Don't forget to vote comment and share.
