ALEXANDRIA WINSTON “You're late Alexandria”. I side hugged my dad, pecking his cheek. . “You didn't tell me what time to be here”. I replied grinning like a cheshire cat. He just pursed his lips, shaking his head at me. “Hi mama”. I said pecking her cheeks, “Sorry I'm la-”. “Gloria, those tulips are beauti-”. All the words and the fake smile ceased the minute Cara Vega spotted me. “Alexandria”. She greeted me. “Cara”.... A smile popped on my lips, and I do hope it was a smile because I saw my dad trying so hard not to laugh at my face. The woman never liked me and I can say the feeling is mutual. She birthed the two monsters that made my life a living hell growing up. Judias and Andrea Vega. Judias, was the boy every girl in high school wanted to be with and every boy wanted to be him. Tall, dark and handsome, didn't even do much justice to describe his handsomeness. The sexy Italian boy took one look at me and decided his life mission was to annoy me. The minute I stopped being annoyed, by his antics he lowered to bullying. “I see you're still not one to keep up with schedule”. She said in a backhanded voice. “Oh trust me Cara, I keep to schedule I do run Winston Inc after all”. Her naturally tan skin reddened and I knew I had hit a sensitive spot. Bullseye! “Oh, look I believe the Thompson's, just came in let's go greet them”. My mom said to Cara, leading her out of the kitchen before she could chide me. “That was entertaining”. Sabina, said smiling at my dad, he smiled back hugging his god daughter. “Are her children coming?”. My dad nodded and smiled at me, in a not so creepy way. “Well, if they're are," I said downing the wine that was handed to me. “This is going to be a long night”. ***** “The dinner was lovely aunty”. Sabina said to my mom and the table which consisted of Odell—Sabina's father, Andrea and Cara, a few of my parents closet friends nodded and hummed in agreement. My mom beamed thanking them while the hired caterers served desserts of ice creams and red velvet cakes. “Too bad Judias, couldn't make it”. Andrea, said looking sullen. “Was looking forward to his return to America”. My cookie dough ice cream went down the wrong hole and I cleared my throat. “He's moving back to New York?”. I said breaking my silence for the first time since dinner. Andrea, scowled at me. I guess she never got over the punch I landed her, in our senior year of high school. Hell! Her mother never got over it too. After her big brother had to move back to Italy, to take care of one of his father's business there, Andrea took it upon herself to pick off where her older brother left off. But I wasn't going to seat back and let a woman like me bully or tear me down. “Yes. I thought we covered it in the meeting”. My dad answered. “And why did we cover it in the meeting?” I looked at my dad sceptically. “What's that got to do with us?”. “We're Merging”. My father said and it felt like I had just been sucker punched. ***** Two Weeks Later, “I'm not getting married to you!”. I raised my head at the sound of the voice, to see the face that tormented me all through my teenage years. The black suit he had on hugged his muscles and his black gold hair was curly on his head, gone were his masculine boyish looks, now in place was a rugged, manly man. I closed my eyes rubbing my temples, feeling the headache that never goes away coming back. “The feeling is mutual, Mr Vega”. He seemed taken aback by my cold voice, that I saw him stiffen, but I only did cause i was studying him like a hawk from under my glasses. “Why don't you have a seat”. I offered pointing to the visitors chair. We stared at each other for what seemed to be like ages. I was really good at reading people through their eyes, but staring at his, I couldn't make out a thing. “It's good to see you again Mr Vega”. He seemed like I gave him a wake up call, cause he shook his head, then a smirk formed on his face as he took his seat “What's with the formality, mia bella?”. The shiver that went down my spine, wasn't from the fact that I wore a sheer see through tank top. But ten years of working along side my father, would teach you how to compose yourself. “Well, we are going to be partners and co CEO's of both our company so I think the formalities, is more than called for.” I said in a stern tone down. The smirk fell off his face, and I had to hide the one on my face. “So, you're gonna act like you didn't hear the first words I sai-”..... “I heard you loud and clear and I believed I answered you”. He leaned back into the chair. “Say Mr Ve—”. “Judias, Alexandria. Judias”. He said cutting me off. “Very well then, Judias”. He smiled at that. And my eyes closed for a millisecond. “You've been gone for fourteen years now, making a name for yourself, and something as trivial as marriage is going to stop you from achieving a milestone in your career”. I raised a brow at him to see if he was following up and he nodded at me. “I don't need a man as much as you don't need a wife, but since our parents think it's best we get married to get to our inheritance so be it”. “So, you'll do anything for money?”. He asked frowning like he was disappointed. “No Judias. I would do anything to get to the final piece of what I've been working for”. “I had to cut a lot of things in my life Judias. Graduated at seventeen, done with college and got my masters at twenty five and have been working my butt off for the past twelve years, this is my destiny, this is my future, my children future”. “So, yes Judias. Yes, I would do anything to get to the top with or without you”. By the time I was done with my little rant I was leaning towards him from across my table, too close that I could see the gold flecks in his green eyes “I don't want to get married”. Was all he said. “Me neither, Judias. But we don't have a choice, our fathers gave us no choice.” I said sighing. “This may not be our choice, but some arrangement could be made” Taking a deep breath, I leaned back into my chair, “We do get married, but do we really need to get married?” Judias's bushy brow, arched and I smiled at the confused look on his face. “You need to listen more, Mr Vega” **** A/N Don't forget to vote, comment and share.
