The Past Never Dies.
“You have two options, Do it or He dies” Louis smirked. “Nooooo!!!” a roar echoed cut short by a knee to the mouth. “Donovan,” a voice whimpered softly. Tears streamed down her eyes as she was between the devil and the deep blue sea. “I…I c…can't” a mere whisper, the last ounce of her courage. “Well then, suit yourself” he waved his hands and immediately a fresh wave of beating stormed Donovan making a cry ring out. “Stop…Donovan” were words that faintly left her lips, drowned in the screams of the man she loved. “Stop it!!!” a loud voice pierced the air. “You know the price if you want it to stop,” he looked at her and smirked. “I'll do it" she said, words of a defeated woman. “I'm sorry I didn't hear you” he smiled coldly, enjoying the humiliation he made her feel. “I said I'll do it you monster!” she screamed. He laughed loudly. “Nooo!!!” a roar rang out. He smiled. Tears fell. He had what he wanted. Defeated a foe he hated. She crawled silently over to her beaten husband, a shadow of her previous self. Holding his swollen face she could see the pain he was in. “You had your fun, now let us go” she shouted. “Urgggh,” he said like a man remembering something good, “I would have, but I’ve got orders” A pause Then, Two shots rang out, Then…silence. But some events don't end when silence comes, They linger, They wait, Karma is a law nothing can escape. Years later… Christopher Adaams stared at the clock. Three minutes. That was all he had left. Three minutes to get from school to work. If he missed this, he lost everything. He grabbed his bag and ran. He was on his way out when he bumped into someone. “Woah, where you off in a rush?” someone asked. “Oh, sorry Jack, I'm running late I'll catch you later” he said going around him. Jack pulled his arm, “Wait take this pay a cab and be off” he handed Christopher some money. “Bro I can't possibly accept this,” The frown on Jack's face made Chris know he didn't have a choice. “Haa,” he let out a sigh, “Thanks man, I'll pay you back, I promise” he said as he headed out. The car sped through the road as he urged the driver to go faster. 2 minutes later he arrived at the office. “Well, well seems your luck hasn’t run out kid” a voice boomed as he entered his work place. “Good Day, Mr Davis” Christopher hurried as he went to change his clothes. “30 seconds was all you had before i could fire you boy, you are so damn lucky” a voice rang out from behind him. Christopher froze. Turning around slowly he saw him. His manager. The one man who seemed to detest him with all his heart. “Good Day Mr Calvin, anything I can help you with?” Christopher asked in the most polite manner he could, as he posed the question to his boss. “I don’t need anything from an orphan,” he said wrinkling his face in disgust. Christopher took it in, then he plastered a big smile on his face, “Okay sir, I’ll get going now” he said and walked off. Immediately he left his smile vanished, he had always been looked down on by his boss but now he was insulted and now his boss took advantage of the situation he was in to try to fire him. “Hey Chris, the CEO wants you in his office right now!” “Big Boss?” Chris looked up eyebrows raised. “Yeah Big Boss, now get your ass in there” Mr Davis smirked. All around him whispers began to fly around as the CEO was rumored to have once destroyed a very powerful empire, burning them till the ashes themselves scattered in the wind. Secondly, it was rare for the Big Boss to come to the office and more rare for him to call someone into his office and if he ever did it meant something bad was to happen to them. Christopher dusted his shaky hands on his overalls and taking deep breaths made his way to his Boss's office. He knocked thrice and heard a deep, commanding voice, “ Come in.” He stepped inside, sweat drops forming on his forehead, “Sir I was told you wanted to see me.” “Yes I did. Have a seat” his Boss said. He sat down, heart pounding, silence deafening making him think his boss could hear the pounding in his chest. He was in an unknown territory, powerless and weak, not knowing if he would get fired, suspended or have his earnings withheld for the month as that was the faith of the majority who the Boss called into his office. But he did know, if any of that happened his life would be literally destroyed as he could barely get a job due to him being a high school student. Even the reason he was given this job was unknown to him. Maybe they had no idea? He thought as he glanced at the man who looked engrossed in the file he held, Maybe it was a mistake or it was overlooked?..., a thousand similar thoughts raced through his head as he sat in front of his boss waiting for the unknown. In the midst of the silence the first words spoken were, “Are you a high school student, Mr Adaams?”. Now his heartbeat increased, Did they not know before he was hired was the thought that briefly flashed through his mind as he answered. “Yes Mr. Dexter” Christopher said in a low voice, sighing as he thought he was going to be fired due to his status as a student. “You do realize that your presence here brings potential issues?” he looked at Christopher. Their eyes met, and in that instant Christopher knew all the rumors he had heard about the man were true. He couldn't explain how he knew but he just felt it along with a small aversion against him. “Yes sir I know, it's just that I really need this job and this is the only place where I was hired even though I was a student, maybe because there was a shortage of workers at the time I applied but…” he trailed off, biting his lower lips as his hands trembled. “I ought to fire you now.” his boss calmly said. "I have been observing you for a while and from what I have seen you are someone whose lateness has a streak, so tell me, why should I pardon you?” He queried with a smile, his eyes twinkling with an edge in his voice that made Christopher flinch in the smallest way possible. His look seemed to pierce through Christopher so much so that he couldn't maintain eye contact and looked down before he answered him. He was a man of mystery, tall, broad and handsome. He seemed to be in his late 40’s and one of the many rumors about him had it that no one dares interrupt him when he speaks, nor do they even speak immediately he's done. He was a man that made men go silent with a look, a man who made you wonder if the saying, “Don't judge a book by its cover” were to be true and being in the office with him Christopher was all the more convinced that nothing good could come out. “Sir…” Chris began, “...i usually don't have the money to pay for a cab so i usually walk and walking from school takes a good amount of time hence my lateness” Christopher replied, his shoulders falling. He smiled, “Eh, is that so?” he leaned towards Christopher, “Yes, but when I have transport fare I enter a cab sir.” Christopher said, looking into his eyes for a brief moment before shifting his gaze. Not that he was afraid, but that he was trying everything within his power not to offend this powerful and mysterious man before him because he knew the consequences and he couldn't bear them. “Christopher was it?...” the man asked and Christopher nodded, “I have heard your excuse and will restrain from firing you because I have heard you are hardworking and everyone seems to like you,” Christopher heaved a sigh of relief, “Thank you si…”, "However I'll only do this on one condition” the twinkle in his eyes shone even brighter. “A condition?” “Yes. You must come to the office before your shift starts, throughout next week." Christopher's eyes widened, “S…si…sir a whole week?” asked Christopher. “Yes, a whole week, you have to show me how much this job means to you. Words are cheap, and I don't buy cheap things.” He said with that glint in his eyes. “I also expect you to be at your best performance, not slacking in the slightest while you work" he said, smirking. “Si…sir it’s literally impossible to come walking that distance under the time my school finishes and the time my shift starts and sometimes I'm usually held back because of some extra curricular activities which are compulsory for all students, and even if I found a way sir I couldn't possibly still give in my best," Christopher said as the color drained from his face. He felt he was going to lose his job for sure. "You'll figure it out” he said, still smiling, “...and remember if you are even a minute late..." he allowed his words hang in the air. Christopher's brows furrowed, as he looked down, pressing his lips into a thin line, Truly being called to the boss’s office was a bad sign he thought as he looked at his boss, who still had that smile on his face as his eyes were fixed on Christopher. " Okay sir, I'll do my best,” Christopher said. "Good. You are dismissed." he said and Christopher left the office. It was the third day of his trial and when he reached his workspace he began his work, carefully and diligently unloading and loading items. “Yeesh, you look like a mess man” a voice to his side said. “Man I don't want to talk about it” he sighed. He didn't need to look, he knew who the voice belonged to, it was his good friend Damien. “Woah, you seem like you went through hell son” Damien said patting Chris on the shoulder, “It'll get better, don't stress too much. By the way, a little birdie told me about a competition.” he smiled and winked. Even though, Damien was his good friend, he had always seen Damien as an odd man, maybe it was because of the fact that Damien was older than him but he just couldn't place his fingers on what accounted for his odd side. Now he spoke about a competition and Christopher knew if he asked him more about it we would definitely be more confused than he originally was, so he let it be, but then something unusual happened. “That competition…” Damien said, “might change your life.” Christopher scoffed lightly he didn't know what Damien spoke now he's claiming it could change his life. But before he could respond, A sharp pain stabbed into his chest. He froze. His hand shot up instinctively. Right where his pendant rested. It burned. For a split second, Voices echoed in his head. Screams. Gunshots. Blood. Christopher staggered. “What… was that…?” Damien was staring at him. Not surprised. Watching.
