Chapter Twenty-One Milo We had to learn to be stealthy in seeing each other. Often, it was meeting somewhere, and then taking my truck or going to her house when her parents were at work. They hadn't directly banned her from seeing me, but had made it clear I wasn't welcome. Clara took it as a challenge and pushed their limits, but I still felt the past guilt and found myself avoiding them altogether. The police never caught Victor, and even though he made himself scarce, I always felt I was on guard. I could tell Clara felt that way, too, yet my desire to be with her only grew. As the credits began to roll on the movie we were watching, the warmth of her curled into me made me dread leaving. Her parents would be home in less than an hour. She sensed the time, sat up, and then sighed.
