Chapter 1

1694 Words
I remember it like it was yesterday, only it was over a hundred years ago. My name is Ellie Rayne and this is my story of how Earth was destroyed in 2046 and the events after. I had a comfortable life. I was married and blessed to be a stay at home mom to two beautiful miracles. My husband and I had only been together for almost six years. Our marriage wasn't perfect but we worked on it. We cared for each other and we loved each other. He was there for me when I was all alone. You see, I grew up in foster care with my siblings after almost our entire family was brutally murdered and burned in the middle of the night. My brother, who is only three years older than me, is the reason we survived. I don't know all the details about that night but I understood we were lucky to get out alive. I was only six and we carried our baby sister, who was only one, into the woods behind our house to hide until morning. Our foster parents weren't nice, they used us as slaves around the house while they collected the checks and food from the Global Government. My brother Leon protected us still, the couple who we were assigned to had a creepy fondness of us but he was the one they took behind doors. He said he did it to protect me. It worked but I still cried silently for him the nights they took him. After his seventeenth birthday he was sent off to train for the Global Officials Military, the GOM, like all orphaned boys were. That left me three years to fight the couple until I was able to get them arrested. Three years I was indecently abused once a week but I took it to keep Liz safe like Leon did to keep me safe. Luckily she was adopted into a caring family a week before the couples cruelty was found out by officials. When I graduated basic schooling at seventeen I was shoved into the world with no where to go and no one to seek out with the great possibility that I would never see my siblings again. Luckily a former teacher of mine had referred me to a training facility to prepare me for executive administration work. I would live there for six years while I studied and worked the program. That was the plan anyway. To help pay for non-study related items I worked at a performers suite where I got paid to dance, sing and tease. There were others that did more extensive services and I was lucky to be able to keep my virtue intact. Until one early morning as I walked to the nearest transporter I was attacked. I remember thinking, s**t! The one time I forget my taser. The world went black. Several days passed when I woke up on the bench close to the transporter that would take me to the facilities lounging’s. I looked down and my clothes were ripped to shreds, my hair a tangled mess and dried blood streaks throughout my body. But no knowledge of what had happened. A few months later I had a miscarriage of a baby I had no remembrance of conceiving. I was at a library crying my grief of all that's passed when he came over to comfort me with a hug. First thing I noticed was his kind hazel blue eyes and sandy blonde hair with some natural red streaks. He wasn't the most fit or even my type but he was kind and as I got to know him I fell in love with him. Almost six years later and we were still happy together. We had a four year old boy named Alaric and a two year old girl we named Ashlyn. They are almost night and day and keep me on my toes often. Alaric has auburn hair with natural blonde streaks and beautiful hazel blue eyes like his daddy's. Where Ashlyn had inherited my hair, light cherry blonde with subtle curls at the end and pale green eyes. Alaric was an extreme picky eater, somewhat like me, whereas Ashlyn has her dads appetite, she ate almost anything and you had to watch how much she ate. The night that it all started began on a good note. Just tucked the kids into bed and finished cleaning the house from the days mess when my husband walked in the door with a huge smile on his face. "I did it babe, I got the promotion and leave next week for Houston to start the training and sign the contract! I can't believe it, we finally did it. You'll be able to go back to school and finish the program. These kids will be able to have the life we didn't have." He said with so much pride and joy as he scooped me up swung me around. "Oh my gosh! That's wonderful! See I told you all that hard work would pay off" playfully slapping his shoulder as I reached up to give him a kiss. He deepened the kiss as he picked me up and pushed me against the wall in our living room. During the movement I had wrapped my legs around his waist and I can't remember who stripped off my night gown. After we got done making slow, sweet love I went into the shower. He was so exhausted from the work hours he had all week that he was passed out for the night by the time I got out. I was too excited from the news he came home with that I was restless. To not disturb his rest I made it to the living room. I had just finished making a cup of brew and I turn on the screen wall for some background noise as I read my story tablet. I was maybe 30 minutes in when there was a sudden commotion outside. "Odd, it's almost one in the morning?" As I peaked out the blinds a sudden flash of light temporarily blinded me then there was a pounding on my door. I ran towards my room and shook my husband awake. At first he looked at me like I lost my damn mind, then he jumped up as he heard the pounding at the door. He pulled on a pair of sweats as he made it to the door. "Can I help you?" He said with an angry yet sleepy tone. I looked around the corner trying to see who the hell it was making such a ruckus in my neighborhood at this time of night. I gasped when I saw men in uniform of the GOM! "I'm sorry sir for the trouble at this hour but we are performing of an emergency evacuation-" the official was explaining as he was cut off by a very frustrated and shocked husband of mine. "A what? What for?" "Sir all information will be given at the evacuation destination. We are requesting all women and children under eighteen pack a separate bag from all men. No necessities are needed, JUST CLOTHES. Everything else will be provided. There will be a bus coming through in an hour to pick up the women and children. They must be outside ready to go with a bag of JUST CLOTHES! The men are requested to pack any weapons they may have along with their basic clothing. Men should be ready to go in half an hour." "Why are you separating the men?" "Men are required to help us fight, again all will be explained at the destination!" The official then turned on his heal and all three men in uniform left. I peaked outside noticing several men in uniform scattered around the neighborhood. As my husband closed the door he looked at me with shock and worry. We stood there for a few beats in shock. "I guess I better pack the bags before I wake the kids." Tears streaming down my face as I had a feeling that this will be the last time I get to see my husband. He came up to me and pulled me to his chest. "It'll be alright babe! It's going to be alright! . . . Um. . . Let me gather what I'm needed and I'll get the kids. I want to say goodbye before they come for me! This is not a forever goodbye, okay? Just a for now!" He said soothingly as he wiped my tears off and kissing me deeply. I had just finished packing the suit case with as many clothes as I could fit in it. I also stuffed a few printed pictures in the middle of the clothes. Something in my heart told me that the world was about to change. I grabbed my bow and quiver filled with arrows to take them to the living room to put by his bags so he could use them if needed. As I walked down the hallway I heard Alaric asking with his sweet sleepy voice, "what's going on daddy? Why are you crying? What's the noise outside?" I didn't hear his answers as I stood there quietly crying. Jumping at a knock on the door, I tried to pull myself together. You have to be strong for them! Don't let the last time he sees you be that you're crying. I turned the corner to see my sweet husband setting down a groggy Ashlyn, wiping his eyes he grabbed his bag and weapons. "Here," I said as even toned as I could muster handing him my bow and quiver, "these might be of use! Stay safe, do what you must but live so I can see you again!" His response was to pull me close and kiss me deeply one last time. Then he turned and left. I knew he loved me even though he didn't say it just then, as he knew I loved him but it would be too hard to say those words at that moment.
