chapter 19

Kai stretched once more, his body taut as the soft light of dawn filtered through the hotel room’s curtains. Zara watched him move, the fluidity of his motions somehow both familiar and distant, like she'd seen this all before but was unsure how to navigate the space between them now. His bare chest was still visible under the dim light, his tattoos tracing familiar paths across his skin as he gathered his clothes from the floor. Zara remained in bed, wrapped in the warmth of the hotel sheets. The silence between them felt different from how it had the night before. Last night had been full of passion and raw emotion, but now, in the light of morning, a sense of uncertainty was creeping back in. She wanted to stay in the quiet cocoon they’d made between the sheets, to hold onto the moments that felt right—but she knew she couldn’t escape the reality of their situation. Kai reached for his jeans, pulling them on quickly, before grabbing a black T-shirt from the chair next to the bed. He was already getting into work mode, his demeanor shifting with each movement. Zara sat up, wrapping the blanket around herself as she watched him, trying to gather the strength to ask the questions that had been swirling in her mind. But they were still in that delicate moment, unsure of what to say, how to even begin to address what had happened between them. "I have to head out," Kai’s voice broke the quiet, low and slightly hoarse from sleep. He glanced over at Zara as he buttoned his shirt. “Got work stuff to take care of.” Zara nodded slowly, feeling a pang of disappointment. She hadn’t expected him to stay the night, but somehow, part of her had hoped that maybe they’d linger a little longer in the afterglow of the night they’d shared. But as she watched him prepare to leave, the reality of his life—the demands that came with it—settled back in. “Of course,” she replied, her voice soft, though she was acutely aware of the space between them. She tried to mask the disappointment, but it lingered in her chest like a quiet ache. Kai didn’t seem to notice her hesitation as he grabbed his jacket from the chair. He moved with a quiet urgency, gathering his things. But then he stopped, glancing back at her. His gaze softened, and he stepped toward her, his expression unguarded for a brief moment. He knelt beside the bed, leaning in to place a soft kiss on her lips. It was brief, lingering in the air between them like a quiet promise, something unsaid but understood. The kiss was a simple gesture, but it felt intimate, meaningful. “I’ll text you later,” he murmured against her lips, his voice a little warmer now. “We’ll figure this out.” Zara nodded, her heart thumping in her chest despite herself. She couldn’t help but feel a flicker of hope rise inside her, even if the uncertainty still lingered. “Yeah,” she replied, her voice steady though her emotions were anything but. “Take care, Kai.” He stood up, giving her one last lingering look as he pulled the door open. With a final glance over his shoulder, he stepped out of the room, the door clicking softly behind him. The silence that followed was deafening. Zara stayed where she was, the warmth of the bed now feeling distant without his presence beside her. She gazed at the door for a moment, her heart still racing from the rush of emotions that had washed over her in the past few hours. The sheets felt cool against her skin now, and the room, once full of energy and warmth, felt a little emptier. She slowly got up, wrapping herself in the robe hanging on the back of the bathroom door. The light from outside streamed in through the window, casting long shadows across the room. The city beyond was waking up, but in this hotel room, everything felt suspended in time—everything except for the questions that were still gnawing at her. Zara walked over to the window and pulled it open just enough to let in the cool morning air. She stood there for a long while, staring out at the street below, watching the world move on without her. She wasn’t sure what to make of last night, or what was to come from it. She didn’t even know what Kai’s kiss, his words, really meant. But standing there, alone in the quiet aftermath, one thing was clear: the night had changed something between them. Whatever this was—whatever it could become—she wasn’t ready to walk away from it just yet. With a sigh, she closed the window and turned back to the hotel room. Life would continue, and they would figure it out. One step at a time.
