chapter 20

Zara dressed slowly, pulling on a simple dress that felt both comfortable and slightly too revealing after the intimacy of the morning. She wasn't sure what to expect in the hotel lobby, but she needed coffee, and maybe a distraction. The scent of pastries and brewing coffee wafted from downstairs, a stark contrast to the lingering scent of Kai on her skin. She descended the stairs, the soft carpet muffling her footsteps. The lobby was a bustle of early risers: business travelers, families, and couples lingering over breakfast. She scanned the room, finding an empty table near the window. The sunlight streamed in, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. She ordered a strong coffee and a pastry, her mind still replaying the moments from the night before. Kai's kiss, his words, the way his eyes had held hers. She was caught between a sense of exhilaration and a deep, gnawing uncertainty. Her phone buzzed, a text from her friend, Nia. "Girl, breakfast? Need to debrief. Lobby in 10?" Zara smiled, a flicker of relief washing over her. Nia was a force of nature, always ready with a witty remark and a listening ear. "Perfect. See you soon." Nia arrived with her usual whirlwind energy, her bright dress and even brighter smile a stark contrast to Zara's quiet demeanor. "Spill," Nia demanded, sliding into the seat opposite her. "Everything. I need details." Zara took a deep breath and began to recount the night, the unexpected encounter, the raw emotion, and the confusing aftermath. Nia listened intently, her expression shifting from surprise to concern to understanding. "And then he just…left?" Nia asked, her eyebrows raised. "Like a disappearing act?" "Not exactly," Zara replied, swirling her coffee. "He kissed me. Said he'd text. Said we'd figure it out." Nia leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. "Figure what out? You two? His complicated life? His job that always pulls him away?" Zara sighed. "I don't know. That's the problem. I don't know what this is." "Well, girl, you deserve to know," Nia said firmly. "You deserve clarity, not vague promises and disappearing acts. He needs to decide what he wants, and he needs to decide now." Zara nodded, feeling a surge of determination. Nia was right. She couldn't live in this limbo, this uncertain space between hope and doubt. "You're right," she said, her voice gaining strength. "I'm going to talk to him. I need to know where we stand." "That's my girl," Nia grinned, squeezing her hand. "But first, we're going to have breakfast. And then we're going to get you a new outfit. Something that says, 'I'm not waiting around.'" Zara laughed, a genuine laugh that felt good after the emotional rollercoaster of the morning. With Nia by her side, she felt a renewed sense of purpose. She would face Kai, and she would find her clarity, no matter what it took.
