With a painful gasp, my eyes flew open. I stared at the ceiling as memories flashed in my mind.
My hand flew automatically to my chest.
No pain, no blood.
I let out a sigh.
“ Princess, are you awake?” A rather familiar sound called from outside.
Mia? She was alive? My eyes wandered around and I recognized the familiar room.
It was my room back at my father's pack.
The realization slammed in hard.
I was… reborn?
A soft knock sounded and before I could arrange my thoughts, the door was pushed open and Mia entered.
“ I have been calling you, princess.. I thought something bad happened to you.” Mia said. The concern in her voice was real and for a moment, I felt the urge to cry.
Seeing her alive stirred something inside me. In my past life, she died for me. She died in my hands, soaking me with her blood.
“ What could happen to me?” I said, forcing a chuckle.
She was always like this – too concerned about me.
“ I'm glad to see you Mia.” I said and pulled her for an embrace, my voice choked with emotions.
She momentarily tensed before relaxing and patting my back.
“ Are you okay? Did you have nightmares again?” She asked and I shook my head, a silly chuckle escaping my lips.
The so- called nightmares in my past life were dreams about my hidden power that I couldn't recognize, that I struggled to suppress.
It was too late when I recognized what ran through my blood.
In this life, I will be who I was meant to be, protect those who deserve my protection and carve my own fate.
“ I'm fine Mia. I am just happy to be alive.” I reply.
Mia frowns at my words but doesn't probe further.
“ You should hurry and get dressed. The beta is…”
“ Let me guess? My uncle is waiting for me at the meeting hall?”
I ask, my lips curling into a sneer.
Mia's eyes widen.
“ How did you know?”
She looks genuinely shocked.
I sneer. “ It's not hard to guess what goes through the mind of a greedy bastard like him.” I spat.
Mia rushes to cover my mouth, terror written all over her face.
“ Princess, I know you hate him but he is still the ruling Beta.” She whispers loud enough for only me to hear.
“ So what? I am the Alpha's daughter. According to the ranks, I am superior to him.”
Ruling Beta my ass. In my past life, he used that borrowed authority and traded me to an old Alpha as if I was some commodity.
I'll be damned if I let him treat me that way now.
Mia looks terrified on my behalf. As an Omega, questioning their superiors was a treason.
“ Princess, you should know that he has a terrible attitude. If you keep him waiting for long, I am afraid…” She starts but I cut her off.
“ He will wait until I am ready to see him.” I announce.
“ Go and prepare my breakfast Mia, I will take my breakfast first before seeing anyone.”
Mia looks like she wants to say something. Eventually, she stops herself and leaves the room.
I slump on my bed, my mind replaying my previous life.
After minutes of contemplating and analyzing, I came up with a decision.
After a hefty breakfast, I take unhurried steps to the meeting room. Uncle Bane is a brooding mess when I step inside the room.
The first thing that meets my eyes is his glare.
“ I summoned you ages ago and you are only showing up now?” He snarls.
I don't let his anger faze me. On the contrary, I give him a smile.
“ I was starving, Uncle.
So I stopped by the pack kitchen to grab something to eat.
That's not a crime, isn't it uncle?”
My mother who is seated next to him shakes her head but I ignore her.
In my past life, she did nothing to stop Uncle Bane from selling me off to a man old to be my father.
In this life, I won’t be counting on her help either.
“ You could have sent your maid to inform me.” Uncle Bane fires back, his anger now seemingly restrained.
“ I overlooked that. My apologies.” I reply, offering him a smile.
“ Now that you are here, let's discuss the main agenda of your summon.” He declares and I don't miss the glint that flickers in his eyes, like he knows he is about to deliver a blow to me.
“ Your mother and I have discussed the pack’s future and agreed that you are to marry Alpha Graham of Crystal lake pack.” Bane announces gleefully.
I let out a humourless chuckle.
“ What does the Pack's future have to do with me marrying that old geezer?”
Uncle Bane and my mother looked shocked by my words.
“ What did you just say?” The beta flares up, his face twisted in anger.
“ I said, what does the future of this pack have to do with me marrying that man?” I repeat,my gaze trained on uncle Bane challengingly.
“ Penelope!” My mother raises her voice at me.
I turn to face her.
“ Did I say anything wrong? This pack needs a leader, not relying on selling women for political gains.” I spat.
My mother gasps. My uncle looks like he could murder me anytime.
“ Tell me something, Uncle. Are you trying to use marriage to harvest benefits and get rid of me? The stumbling block to your power seize?”
I don't bother playing nice anymore.
He wants to eliminate me and take over the pack like he did in my past life? He should stop dreaming.
“ I don't know what you are talking about?”
“ Are you sure you don't understand what I mean?
When my father passed away, he left the pack temporarily in your hands until one of his heirs clocked eighteen.
Did you forget something, uncle? I just celebrated my eighteenth birthday.”
In my past life, I didn't learn about that rule until it was too late – until he was crowned Alpha and imprisoned my mom.
The shock in his eyes is a sellout of his little act. My mother turns to look at him with doubtful eyes.
“ You are talking nonsense.” My uncle retorts. His voice betrays him though.
“ Am I?” I raise my brows.
“ I am the legitimate and rightful heir of this pack. It's about time I take my position as the Alpha.” I declare with finality.
My uncle bursts out laughing like he just heard a joke.
“ You? An Alpha? You should stop deluding yourself.” He sneers, finally showing his colors.
“ We shall see about that.” With that, I don't spare them another look, turn around and walk away.
Outside, I take deep breaths to calm my racing heart.
I might have played tough back there but deep inside, I was sweating.
That was my first step to rewriting my stars and now, I was ready for my second step; meeting him.
